Moderators John317 Posted December 2, 2010 Moderators Posted December 2, 2010 Do you really think that a normal Adventist would buy and wear such T-shirt? I mean honestly, how many people on this forum do you know that would do that? I can't think of a single one... I can't think of a single person in our church that would do that. You should think again if you don't believe there are many in the church who would wear such a thing. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Moderators John317 Posted December 2, 2010 Moderators Posted December 2, 2010 I think it's awful when nobody can recognize satire. If you were wearing the shirt and someone asked you what it means, what would you say? Would the shirt make it more likely or less likely that someone would become interested in the health message and the Three Angels' Messages? Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Moderators Bravus Posted December 2, 2010 Moderators Posted December 2, 2010 I suspect context is a huge amount with humor. For the people Gerry knows and works with, these designs would be offensive: and one would indeed be a moron to wear one, in that context. In my own context, such condemnations are much more likely to be laughed at than taken to heart. Quote Truth is important

GreatLakesGramma Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Lampoon or not, punchlines or not, when a non-SDA sees it, what does s/he think of it? Another SDA exclusivism & superiority attitude. Exactly. Those who hold such opinions as are being lampooned by the shirts are actually a small minority of Adventists. They just happen to be a very visible minority, as people of their type usually are. But no matter what denomination of church you go to, there will always be such people. And people will always judge that denomination, and all of Christianity, by that visible, obnoxious, minority... just like every other group of people. aldona Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Truthfully, I don't know what I would do. I probably wouldn't wear one myself, but would chuckle in the presence of one. I can imagine how this would be a political statement within some circles! I would certainly wear some of those T-shirts around Adventists (especially the one about coffee - my fellow church members know about my weakness for the brown liquid, especially when I come to church after a tough week at work). I would probably get some laughs. I'm sure some of us forum members can think of some more designs which gently poke fun at some Adventist behaviors and traditions. Here's a couple: - T-shirt with dotted or broken line all the way around at waist level or just below. Caption: "Maximum water level on Sabbath." - Caption on shirt: We don't believe in setting dates, but Jesus is coming in1964 1969 1975 1980 1984 1986 1992 2000 2001 2004 2006 2010 2012 come on folks - if you don't like their shirts, let's come up with some of our own. Moderators John317 Posted December 4, 2010 Moderators Posted December 4, 2010 Well, how bout Tshirts proclaiming the gospel message rather than condemning non-SDAs.. ^__^ I like that idea. fccool Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 My gut-level thought? The whole thing is a gimmicky subversive plot, thought up by someone who wanted and got, a reaction. Doubt it. My wife had an idea sometime ago to make a series of humorous videos... you know you are Adventist if. It would end on a serious note, but there's lot's of similar things. Perhaps not as strong, but similar. I think the attitude underlined by the T-shirts is in fact mockery of pride and judgment that does run in many Adventist churches. Perhaps there is a lot loosening up that I've noticed, yet this attitude is far from minority in my church. There's this silly standard that I see... if you just avoid shrimp, pork and other products on God's forbidden menu... you are fine and healthier in the long run. It's silly for various reasons. You can eat shrimp and eat healthier than a lot of Adventists who don't. And it's quite ironic that the big picture goes out of the window when it comes to the idea of "Obeying God". Looking at what kids eating today in some Adventist families... I think they would be better off eating some fish and shrimp instead. I do understand that denominational Adventism does not simply emphasize avoiding just the groups on the forbidden menu of Exodus. I think it's reasonable thing to do. Yet, on individual level there's a huge amount of hypocrisy of someone objecting presence of shrimp at the potluck, and has no problem with the desert table that would do far more damage to one's health. Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted December 4, 2010 Administrators Posted December 4, 2010 My favorite T-shirt of this sort was the one that said "What part of... don't you understand?" The illustration in the the sentence break was one of the old Daniel and Revelation prophecy timeline charts. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

fccool Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 'Nuff sed, Thank you for popping it up right there in a manner that the t-shirts mock. A bit of guilt mixed with bit of "God said"... muah (kissing fingers) Love that recepie! Someday, you will inspire a t-shirt of your own :) Quote
pindoc Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 good grief! those are awful. I mean, most everyone in the Real World, non-SDA ghetto, 99.99% of the world, would not get the satire. so they would not know it's supposed to be satirical. hot potatoes? I tell you, b4 I read the captions, food was not what came to mind. maybe I've perused the wrong pages of the online t-shirt stores and my mind got too close to the gutter when I saw the headline caption! the only place I can think of wearing it is where there would only be SDA's. but there really isn't anyplace where there would only be SDA's and we could guarantee that all would be veterans and solid in their faith and no visitors would be present. that article about this biz-owner did have a t-shirt with a slogan about haystacks. couldn't read the whole thing but love that idea! and oh yes, I've heard that black pepper is only 4 heathens. which even EGW never, never said. she emphasized that people's diets have to be individualized per climate, occupation, season and individual constitution. she did say that hard aged cheeses, are "unfit for human consumption." where I live, in the Pacific NW, most people should eat black pepper. there is so much cold damp here and a high incidence of certain diseases that I and many professionals believe are influenced by climate. but I mean whole food black pepper - fresh ground in small quantities. any pepper out of a can is evil, but only b/c it's a refined food and all that's left is irritating to the gut in the absence of the essential/volatile oils that are healthy and beneficial. that's my deflated 2 cents worth and the local nutrition lecture for the morning.
