I had a dear old friend for many years in the church who maintained till her dying day (96 yrs) that Christmas trees were a brainchild of Satan, and every year she would wag her knarly old finger at Jer 10 and say: "see." Sometimes we are too rough on people who don't like them.

Not really sure what was being done 3000 years ago on December 25 but about 2000 years ago, modified by the Jewish Luner calender as opposed to the solar calender, but on or about December 25 little Jewish boys and girls were cellebrating the birth of Issac, the birth of the promised child.

My grandmother (not an SDA) had a dear friend who had been raised by a very strict SDA father and mother. They were so strict that she left the church and never looked back. They were never allowed to have a Christmas tree or even to celebrate in any way the birth of Christ. She was kind and sweet, and a lover of Jesus.

My wife grew up in a strict Adventist home where they did not have a tree. I assured her that only a real tree is sinful. An artificial tree really isn't a tree. It is a piece of furniture. And we never deck our tree out with silver and gold. We stick to glass ornaments and lights so Jer. 10 clearly isn't talking about us.

Maybe "fanatic adventist home" would be a better choice of words. I was raised in a strict SDA home. Maybe too strict. But we had a Christmas Tree.

Fanatic certainly fits, but how does "Adventist" or "Christian" fit if that's what they are? When such accuse and condemn; they call it "ministry."

So..... I had just picked up some poinsettias and taken them to church. I put them in the sanctuary. I inhaled deeply the smell of the Christmas Trees in the church. I was feeling good. The trees we are good size and tastefully decorated. I go to my office and someone had pushed under my door " The plain truth about Christmas" which was the usual tirade about trees, presents santa etc etc. I later found out that this was being distributed by an ex-pastor who has recently started attending our church. .

you know, Laz, when it gets a bit stressful in the hospital, we joke about a valum salt lick....Sometimes I wonder if church congregations don't need it from time to time...[For those who might want to know, a "lick" is a reference to cattle and herding...a salt lick is used for the herds nutritional status]
