Woody Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Rep. Ron Paul from Texas says we should cut off all aid to the Middle East. I have to agree. The protesters feel that our money is just trying to buy them off. They resent our aid. And we actually don't have the money we are giving them. I don't feel our prophet would advise us to borrow money to give to them. She was against the use of credit cards which is what we are using to give them aid. So ... OFF with it. Dr. Shane Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I have read a bit about the situation but really don't know which of the two evils is worse. Is a secular dictator worse than the Muslim Brotherhood which seeks "democracy" in Egypt? How will the Muslim Brotherhood democracy impact the Adventist schools in Egypt? The Muslim brotherhood is the Egyptian aka of Hamas in Lebanon. Lots of "democracy" going on in those countries? Maybe you should ask some Iranian expats over here what they think is worse. This will probably get real ugly. Quote
Moderators John317 Posted February 1, 2011 Moderators Posted February 1, 2011 I completely agree with you, Woody, but in the case of Egypt, if they put in a moderate who is friendly with the West, you can be sure we will continue to send them billions of dollars in foreign aid. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

The $1.5 billion (give or take a couple hundred million) we give Egypt is directly tied to the Camp David Accord. It includes the recognition of Israel as a state. If Egypt violates the terms of that agreement then gone should be the money. Moderators John317 Posted February 1, 2011 Moderators Posted February 1, 2011 Thanks for that, Doug. That's certainly something that must be considered in all this. I guess it's comforting to believe that the US would be willing to pay billions of dollars to get Egypt to act "with civility". Governments have one type of interest and that is self interest. Do you really think the US and others would be interested in the security of Israel if it were not for the fact that it provides a friend in the Middle east and then a means to disrupt the balance of power in the middle east. After 30 years of uninterrupted peace on the Egyptian border? Notice that when Egypt quit attacking Israel and recognized her right to exist peace became a reality? Moderators lazarus Posted February 2, 2011 Moderators Posted February 2, 2011 In the long term I think the best case scenario is a nuclear armed Iran and then Israel will be forced to deal equitably with the Palestinians. The army in Egypt won't allow itself to be governed by a radical Islamic regime. The uncertainty is good, however, becasue it make the US and Israel take a fresh look at things.
