This morning, I would like to submit the following for your perusal and if possible read the complete article before comments. Thank you for your time and for your comments which will be much appreciated.

Clear down through history, God has had an unbroken line of faithful people. In Christ's day, the Apostles and their converts were the true people of God. But with the falling away of those who followed the early leaders came the rise of the man of sin (papacy) foretold in prophecy. But despite this there were true followers of the Lord in all lands, people who suffered terribly at the hands of the fallen church.

Then came the revival of the truth through the Reformers the first of whom was John Wycliffe, then Huss and Jerome, next came Lefevre and Farrel in France and at last Luther and his associates. Mighty indeed was the work which they did but they were the beginning, not the ending of the preparation of the people who are to finish the work of God in all the world.

These did not understand the great prophecies of Daniel 8:14 and of Revelation 13-19. More truth was yet to be revealed and for this purpose, God brought into being The Great Advent Movement of the 1833-1844 period.

THE RISE OF THE ADVENT MOVEMENT

Nowhere is the rise of the Advent Movement better portrayed than in Revelation 14:6-12. The particular symbol which engages our attention is the symbol of the angels of the prophecy. An angel in this connection symbolizes a movement of people.

"These angels represent those who receive the truth and with power open the gospel to the world." Ellen, Bible Commentary, Vol.7, p.979.

But notice that each of the angels follows the one before him. They do not all come at the same time in succession. This indicates that rather than there being the one movement, there is a succession of movements. Yet at the same time we speak of the Great Advent Movement as if it was one movement only. This is also true but the fact remains that there is a succession of movements within the overall movement!

This is the fact of the case as we witness it in history. As we study the rise of the movement, we shall see a significant pattern emerging. The warning message began to be given under the call and guidance of the Lord within the Protestant Churches which at that time, 1833, were the professed people of God upon the earth.

A PATTERN EMERGING

1. In 1833, it was light beyond that which the churches had yet found in their march away from the apostate church.

2. It was not given by the ecclesiastical authorities of the churches, and,

3. Only a small portion actually accepted the light and followed it.

This is the basic pattern which we shall see repeated with every new "angel" coming upon the scene. Let us put the facts of it down again so that it is clear in mind.

First of all it was light beyond that which had been already received. It was the message of the impending judgment in the light of Daniel 8:14.

Secondly, it was carried, not by the established and recognized leaders of the churches but by laymen of God's own choosing. Miller and Himes were the principal leaders in the proclamation of the first angel's movement or message!

Thirdly, only a few of those who were in the churches took their stand for the message. The remainder fought it most vigorously. Only a minority stood for it.

So the first angel's movement was formed and it was then largely a church within the churches. Separation was not a clear cut and absolute matter although they were separate in spirit. Yet they still largely belonged to the churches.

THE SECOND MOVEMENT

The second "angel" followed the first. In the summer of 1844, began to sound the message, "Babylon is fallen," and a new movement took shape. Once again the same pattern is repeated.

First, here was light in advance of that sounded by the first angel's movement. But at the same time they held to and taught all the truth which had been revealed through the first angel.

Secondly, it was carried, not by those who had been the leaders in the first angel's movement but by new leadership. Whereas Miller and Himes had been the men who had led out in the first movement, Fitch, Litch, and Snow were the voices in the second.

Thirdly, not all those who had stood for the message of the first angel were prepared to go on into the second message and movement. They showed then that they were willing to go so far with the Lord but not all the way. Thus they turned their backs from following Him and lost the truth and the salvation which comes through the truth. Others came in to take their places until the numbers swelled to over 50,000 in the days which led up to October 1844. See The Great Controversy, p.376.

THE THIRD MOVEMENT

The second movement did not complete the work either. This movement was but a stage further in the program of last day events. The third "angel" followed the second. And the fact of history is that the third movement began immediately the second had taken the people as far as it could for the time being.

On the 22nd of October 1844, came THE GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT as their expectations of seeing the Lord come were not realized. The very next day, after a long night of prayer, the clarifying light began to dawn and the third angel's message began.

Again the pattern was repeated. First, there was additional light not studied by either the first or the second movement. It was light which showed the special work of Christ in the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary. It showed the real nature of the cleansing of the sanctuary and explained as to why they had been disappointed in their expectations. But let it be seen that nothing of what they now received led them to reject the great basic truths received under the first and the second angels. The new light only added to and confirmed the previous light given, and they preached all that and the extra light with still greater conviction and power.

Secondly, those who had led out in the second angel's movement were not the leaders now. New men came upon the scene to carry the work forward. Now it was Bates, Loughborough, and James and Ellen White.

Thirdly, not all those who took their part in the second angel's message found their way into the third. In fact only a remnant did. Of the 50,000 who looked for the Lord to come on October 22, 1844, only very few remained for the added light. They also showed that their faith was of a nature which could not endure the trials which awaited them and they fell under the test and then cast away what truth they had. Thus they too, lost their eternal life.

THE FOURTH MOVEMENT

There is yet another angel to follow the third and he is spoken of in Revelation 18:1. Already laid down for us is the clear cut pattern of what this will mean. It will mean that there will be a great deal of additional light to be added to the light already given. It means that it will be championed by new leaders. It means that the vast majority of those who were numbered as the members of the third angel's movement will reject this light and finally persecute those who do accept it. It means that they will lose their eternal life in so doing for they will demonstrate that they are prepared to go so far with their Lord.

The fourth and final angel's message will institute a fresh movement as did the previous three, with added light, new leadership and only a remnant of the personel of the previous movement going on into it!

The prophetic word has made the clearest declarations of when the first angel's message began, when the second and when the third began. Can we not therefore expect to find equally clear declarations about the fourth? Absolutely.

Four years after the preaching of elders Waggoner and Jones, we read:

"The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth." Ellen, Bible Commentary, Vol.7, p.984; Review and Herald, Nov.22, 1892.

On the same page is this wonderful statement:

"The prophecies of the eighteenth of Revelation will soon be fulfilled. During the proclamation of the third angel's message, 'another angel' is to come down from heaven having great power and the earth is to be lightened with his glory."

By the plain words of these statements, then, what year did this angel begin his work? 1888. Here is another witness from the book Selected Messages, Vol.1, p.235:

"The light that was to lighten the whole earth with its glory was resisted and by the action of our own brethren has been in a great degree kept away from the world."

These statements leave us with no doubt whatsoever, that, as surely as the first angel came in 1833, the second in the spring of 1844, and the third in October 23, 1844, just so surely the fourth came in the year 1888. The first angel represented a movement of people, as did the second, and also the third. Does the fourth or the angel of Revelation 18:1 also represent a movement of people with added light and new leadership? Certainly!

"Hence the movement symbolized by the angel coming down from heaven lightening the earth with his glory... The angel who unites in the proclamation of the third angel's message is to lighten the whole earth with his glory. A work of world-wide extent and unwonted power is here foretold." The Great Controversy, pp.604,611.

LIGHT BEYOND THE THIRD

The 1888 message was light beyond that which the churches had already received. It was the message of the merits and righteousness of Christ in clear, distinct lines:

"Righteousness is obedience to the law. The law demands righteousness. This the sinner owes to the law but he is incapable of rendering it. The only way to attain to righteousness is through faith. By faith the sinner can bring to God the merits of Christ, and the Lord places the obedience of His Son to the sinner's account. Christ's righteousness is accepted in place of man's failure, and God receives, pardons, justifies, the repentant, believing soul, treats him as though he were righteous, and loves him as He loves His Son. This is how faith is accounted righteousness; and the pardoned soul goes on from grace to grace, from light to a greater light." Ellen, Review and Herald, Nov.4, 1890.

This clear light was carried, not by the established leaders of the day, but by men of God's own choosing. Whereas Bates, Loughborough, and James and Ellen White were the principal leaders in the proclamation of the third angel's message, Elen White, Waggoner, and Jones were the voices in the fourth.

"The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through elders Waggoner and Jones... It invited the people to receive the righteousness of Christ which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God. Many had lost sight of Jesus and they needed to have their eyes directed to Jesus, to His divine Person, His merits, and His changeless love for the human family... This is the third angel's message, which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice and attended with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in large measure." Testimoies to Ministers, p.91,92; Faith and Works, p.65,66,93,97.

That this message was light in advance of that sounded by the third angel's movement is verified in the following statements from the pen of inspiration:

"When brother Waggoner brought out these ideas at Minneapolis, it was the first clear teaching on this subject-- Righteousness by faith--from any human lips I had heard, excepting the conversations between myself and my husband." MS 5, 1888.

It is evident that the Lord Himself regarded the message of Waggoner and Jones as something not preached clearly before. The message of 1888 was something which the brethren had not previously comprehended.

"In Minneapolis God gave precious gems of truth to His people in new settings." Counsels to Writers and Editors, p.30.

Not all those who stood for the message of the third angel were prepared to go on into the fourth message and movement.

"That light which was to fill the whole earth with its glory has been despised by some who claim to believe what is present truth. Be careful how you treat it. Take off the shoes from off your feet, for you are on holy ground." Testimonies to Ministers, pp.89,90.

CONCLUSION

We must today keep pace with the advancing light and be prepared to go on into the fourth angel's movement as the message is revived the second time. The same pattern will be repeated except that this time, the work will be brought to its completion. It will "spread like fire in the stubble" and it will be "a complete success," for Christ's righteousness will accomplish everything. See 1 S.M.118,411; F.W.27.

"At Minneapolis, there was evidence and there was reasoning from the Word that commended itself to the conscience; but the minds of men were fixed, sealed against the entrance of light, because they had decided it was a dangerous error removing the old landmarks when it was not removing a peg of the old landmarks, but they had perverted ideas of what constituted the old landmarks." Ellen, Counsels to Writers and Editors, p.30.

The fourth angel's movement with its added light, resisted before, will most likely be resisted again. The following statement bears that out:

"If this attitude is preserved, then when the Lord shall again let His light shine upon the people, they will turn from the heavenly illumination." 1 S.M.143.

The pattern will be repeated:

"Those who have trusted to intellect, genius, or talent will not then stand at the head of rank and file. They did not keep pace with the advancing light. In the last great work few great men will be engaged. They are self-sufficient, independent of God and He cannot use them. The Lord has faithful servants, who in the shaking, testing time will be disclosed to view." Testimonies, Vol.5, pp.80,81.

Comments welcome and appreciated.

Thank you Club for that comment. Your're right it is a bit deep in the sense that it is not something that is often discussed, if ever, and yet history shows that it is exactly what happened and we can expect this pattern to be repeated when the Lord, under the fourth angel, shall finish the work and cut it short in righteousness.

To the message of the righteousness which is of God through faith, that is, by appropriating to ourselves the all-sufficient merits of Christ's sacrifice, is this invitation: "Acquaint now yourself with God." Job 22:21. It is also God's message to mankind. To acquaint ourselves with Him is to acknowledge that though His throne is in Heaven, by His Spirit He is everywhere present working in and through all. Thus we are to recognize in nature the working of an unseen, mighty Intelligence that is moving in all things according to His will. Thus we are led to acknowledge that "Not only is Christ the Originator of all but He is the life of everything that lives." So we read, "All created beings live by the will and power of God. They are recipients of the the life of the Son of God." 1 S.M.301.

Thus we read, "Life is mysterious and sacred. It is the manifestation of God Himself the source of all life." Ministry of Healing, p.397.

"A mysterious life pervades all nature--a life that sustains the unnumbered worlds throughout immensity, that lives in the insect atom which floats in the summer breeze, that wings the flight of the swallow and feeds the young ravens which cry, that brings the bud to blossom and the flower to fruit. The same power that upholds nature is working also in man... For all the objects of His creation, the condition is the same--a life sustained by receiving the life of God." Education, p.99.

"Without the life of God, nature would die." E.G. White, 1 B.C.1081.

We are only scratching the surface of this topic here but it should suffice to show that the mighty power that works through all nature and sustains all things is not merely an all-pervading principle, a mere impersonal essence. No. "Nature in her work testifies of the intelligent presence and active agency of a Being who moves in all things according to His will." M.H.416.

This intelligent presence working in and through all is Christ through the Holy Spirit, His Representative and immediate Agency.

Thus we read, "To those who thus acquaint themselves with Christ, the earth will nevermore be a lonely and desolate place. It will be their Father's house filled with the presence of Him who once dwelt among men." Education, 120.

I don’t want to open a big can of worms with this but was 1833 a true fulfillment of the 1st Angel’s message?

Did the everlasting gospel go to every person on every continent of the world? – No. I don’t even think they understood the Sabbath back then so that wouldn’t even be a partial fulfillment.

Maybe, just maybe the 144,000 will give all three messages to the whole world in the last days and that will be the true fulfillment. In Rev. 14 the three angel's messages come right after the 144,000 are mentioned.

The first and second and third angel's message are to be repeated. As a result the 144,000 will be formed. No one can become a member of that illustrious company without successfully passing the great final test at the end of the loud cry. Only those who pass this great final test can pass the scrutiny of the judgment of the living and receive the final seal prior to entering into the time of Jacob's trouble.

Cheddar,

You are showing unusually logical thinking for this board. You are exactly right when you say that the 3 Angels messages will be proclaimed to the world AFTER the 144,000 are sealed. Since this has not yet happened then the 3 Angels Messages have not been given. Also, since they have not been given there is no possibility for them to have been partially fulfilled earlier, with another fulfillment coming later. That makes no sense. The problem with your thinking on this is that this messes with the 'tried' and 'true' interpretation subscribed to by the SDA church for all these years, and we just know the church CANNOT be wrong in any prophetic interpretation (hic).

Be prepared for some flack on this from those on the board that hold the the traditional SDA mind set. They don't like it when people prove them wrong using the prophecies themselves as proof.

Good on ya'.

I enjoy studying prophecy but most adventists have lost their love for it - about the only thing they can stomach anymore is an Amazing facts seminar.

While I personally enjoy studying the prophetic end of time messages as well as the history of the church, one thing stands above all: Unity. If we are in agreement on the major points of doctrine, it is enough. We don't need to have a deep knowledge of the 144,000, their purpose, of whom they are comprised or when they are formed. On this matter the exact meaning of the 144,000 silence is eloquence.

In order to become a member of that illustrious company, "the 144,000," one must first grow up into Christ during both the early and latter rain and loud cry until the full corn of Christ's character is in the ear. Then the mission of the Gospel will be completed and probation for the world will close. It is then that the people of God will receive the final seal and thus they will be prepared to go through the time of Jacob's trouble.

Another aspect of the last message of mercy under "Acquaint now yourself with Him," is the understanding that "God does not stand toward the sinner as an executioner of the sentence against transgression; but He leaves the rejectors of His mercy to themselves to reap that which they have sown... The Spirit of God, persistenly resisted, is at last withdrawn from the sinner, and then there is left no power to control the evil passions of the soul, and no protection from the malice and enmity of Satan." The Great Controversy, p.36.

This is true for individuals, churches, and nations.

This is well illustrated in what happened to the Jewish nation:

"The long-suffering of God toward Jerusalem only confirmed the Jews in their stubborn impenitence. In their hatred and cruelty toward the disciples of Jesus they rejected the last offer of mercy. Then God withdrew His protection from them and removed His restraining power from Satan and his angels, and the nation was left to the control of the leader she had chosen." The Great Controversy, p.28.

"Their sufferings are often represented as a punishment visited upon them by the direct decree of God. It is thus that the great deceiver seeks to conceal his own work. By stubborn rejection of divine love and mercy, the Jews had caused the protection of God to be withdrwan from them, and Satan was permitted to rule them according to his will. The horrible cruelties enacted in the destruction of Jerusalem are a demonstration of Satan's vindictive power over those who yield to his control." The Great Controversy, p.35,36.

We are told that "the principles of God's dealing with men are ever the same." G.C.343.

The next quotations reveal what these principes are:

"I was shown that Satan would entangle and then destroy, if he could, the souls he had tempted. God will bear long, but there is a bound to His mercy, a line which marks His mercy and His justice. I was shown that the judgments of God would not come directly out from the Lord upon them, but in this way--they place themselves beyond His protection. He warns, corrects, reproves, and points out the only path of safety; then, if those who have been the objects of His special care follow their own course, independent of the Spirit of God, after repeated warnings, if they chose their own way, then He does not commission His angels to prevent Satan's decided attacks upon them." Manuscript Releases, Vol.14, 3.1

"From those who to the end continue in obstinate rebellion, He removes His protecting care. Providence will no longer shield them from Satan's power." RH Vol.4, 335.

"Men have reached a point in insolence and disobedience which shows that their cup of iniquity is almost full. Many have well-nigh passed the boundary of mercy. Soon God will show that He is indeed the living God. He will say to the angels, 'No longer combat Satan in his efforts to destroy. Let him work out his malignity upon the children of disobedience; for the cup of iniquity is full. They have advanced from one degree of wickedness to another, adding daily to their lawlessness. I will no longer interfere to prevent the destroyer from doing his work.'" RH Vol.4,335; P.P.98; 8 T 50.

One more topic which is another aspect of the last message of mercy to the church and to the world is to understand what it means to eat and drink by faith, that is, to eat the flesh and drink the blood of Christ as far as our physical nature is concerned and how much more understanding what it means to eat His flesh and drink His blood regarding our spiritual nature.

sky

"The merits of His sacrifice are sufficient to present to the Father in our behalf." S.C.36.

Jesus said "Unless you eat My flesh and drink My blood you have no life in you." And then He said, "For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed." John 6:53,55.

This is true, both for our physical and spiritual natures. "As the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father, so he that eateth Me, even he shall live by me." John 6:57.

Concerning our physical nature, we read, "Never one, saint or sinner, eats his daily food but he is nourished by the body and blood of Christ." Desire of Ages, p.660. Therefore "The light shining from that Communion service in the upper chamber makes sacred the provisions for our daily life. The family board becomes as the Table of the Lord and every meal a sacrament." D.A.660.

The family board becomes as the Table of the Lord and every meal a sacrament! Yes, because "It is His life that we receive in the sunshine, in the pure, sweet air, and in the food which builds up our bodies and sustains our strength." Education, p.197.

"Therefore, during the Communion service we do not partake of the flesh or of the blood of Christ any more than we do in an ordinary meal provided we are eating and drinking that which the Lord has given us to eat. This service in the upper room teaches us how to eat. It contains a lesson on health reform. It sets the pattern for every meal. Now since according to 1 Cor.11:29,30, failure to discern the Lord’s body in the provisions for our daily life is the cause why many are weak and sickly, and why many sleep, it follows that if the Lord’s body were discerned, the opposite would be the case. If men discerned the Lord’s body, they would find strength and health...

The Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and said, 'This is My body.' This occurred when they were eating. The bread was the ordinary unleavened bread that they had on the table, and such it was after Jesus had given thanks; then He took the cup, and said, 'This is My blood.' It was ordinary grape juice that they had on the table, and such it was after Jesus had given thanks...

"We know that it is utterly useless to spend time arguing, what is true enough, that the catholic priest has not the power to change the bread into the body of Christ; for the Scripture tells us that it is that already. 'This is My body.' There is no magic whatever about the matter. To be sure, the partaking of the body and the blood of Christ in the Lord’s Supper is absolutely independent of any action of any priest or minister.” E.J. Waggoner, The Everlasting Covenant, p.119.120.

The words of Jesus are absolute and unequivocal and admit of no private interpretation. Jesus stated a simple fact.

This is a deep truth that we need to understand.

"Man who is in honor, but does not understand, is like the beasts that perish." Ps.49:20.

"For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep." 1 Cor.11:29,30.

"And how much more are Christ's words true of our spiritual nature. He declares, 'Whoso eateth My flesh and drinketh My blood, hath eternal life.' It is by receiving the life for us poured out on Calvary's cross, that we can live the life of holiness. And this life we receive by receiving His word, by doing those things which He has commanded. Thus we become one with Him." D.A.660.

Simply because "In every command and in every promise of the Word of God is the power, the very life of God, by which the command may be fulfilled and the promise realized. He who by faith receives the Word is receiving the very life and character of God." C.O.L.38.

"That law of ten precepts of the greatest love that can be presented to man is the Voice of God from Heaven speaking to the soul in promise. There is not a negative in that law although it may appear thus." E.G. White, 1 B.C.1105.

"The creative energy that called the world into existence is in the Word of God. That word imparts power, it begets life. Every command is a promise; accepted by the will, received into the soul, it brings with it the life of the Infinite One. It transforms the nature and re-creates the soul in the image of God. The life thus imparted is in like manner sustained, by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God shall man live... The Scriptures are to be received as God's Word to us, nor merely written but spoken." Education,126; Ministry of Healing, p.122.

"God's holy, educating Spirit is in His word." C.O.L.132.

"The words that I SPEAK unto you, they are Spirit and they are Life." John 6:63,.
