Members phkrause Posted February 28, 2012 Members Posted February 28, 2012 Full frontal implies frontal body contact. Most church hugs are more frontal than anything else, but only involve one arm, minimal shoulder contact, bodies leaning forward so that nothing else touches, and not enough time to begin counting seconds. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Moderators Gerr Posted February 29, 2012 Moderators Posted February 29, 2012 I voted for handshakes. Actually, I abhor handshakes. I only do it because in this country, it's uncivil not to do so. But you never know where those hands have been, and what bugs are in them. Quote

Administrators Naomi Posted February 29, 2012 Administrators Posted February 29, 2012 Nothing that a little hand cleanser won't solve. Yes, but folks seem to get upset if you squirt hand sanitizer either on their hands before you shake, or on yours after the hand shake. cricket Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 With shaking hands, people also tend to forget that hand sanitizers (as well as lotions) can irritate the skin of some people, and the noses of other people. Hand soaps are also many times perfumed. Allergies are serious business that many people ignore. Those that suffer are not necessarily being rude when they reject a greeting that involves touching--they simply cannot take one more handshake, or one more hug. Quote
Woody Posted February 29, 2012 Author Posted February 29, 2012 I can appreciate that cricket - but what is the practical answer. Should we not wash our hands before going to church? That would seem to be far worse. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
ClubV12 Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I'm taking this thread seriously, I think I need to come out my shell just a bit. So last night at our Tuesday night bible study (small group of friends) I gave one of the lady members a very modest hug. Just because I love her that much. Such precious friends. Quote
Administrators Gail Posted February 29, 2012 Administrators Posted February 29, 2012 I can appreciate that cricket - but what is the practical answer. Should we not wash our hands before going to church? That would seem to be far worse. Wear gloves, for sure! People would understand if you explained about the allergies... I think. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Naomi Posted February 29, 2012 Administrators Posted February 29, 2012 Very modest hugs are good Over the top, full embracing hugs ... not good Proud of you! I hope you felt good after you gave her the hug. And, I suspect that she smiled. Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God

So, do I understand your correctly - that all people attending church should wear gloves? Or should we only wear gloves if there is a member in the church with allergies? Administrators Naomi Posted March 1, 2012 Administrators Posted March 1, 2012 Wearing gloves to church would be kinda cool. Oops I always wanted to wear a pair of the long black gloves that went just above the elbow. If I remember correctly the beautiful lady also wore sleeveless dresses, complimented by casually draped fur, and large flashy bracelets worn over the gloves. Classic early 50ties movies. On second, thought, perhaps my vision of gloves in church would not be appropriate. Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God

cricket Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I can appreciate that cricket - but what is the practical answer. Should we not wash our hands before going to church? That would seem to be far worse. I think washing your hands is a great idea! But, beware that there are people who are sensitive to the fragrances in your laundry detergent, shampoo, deodorant, hairspray, cologne, perfumes, lotions and soaps--and when those people choose not to shake hands or hug, understand that it's not because they are trying to be rude. Additionally, it is frustrating to those people to have to explain their situation each and every time. "Oh, I'm sorry, but the fragrances you're wearing cause me to react with hives/sinus infection/headaches." "But, I'm not wearing any perfume." "I'm sorry, but my super senses tell me otherwise." It's enough to make a person want to stay at home. The practical answer? Be happy if you're a hand-shaker/hugger and appreciate the handshakes and hugs you get in return. Also, be happy even if you don't get a handshake or a hug in return--and be happy for the person you're greeting and just say hello to them instead. Quote
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted March 3, 2012 Administrators Posted March 3, 2012 I'm with Bravus on this. But whatever greeting is appropriate do it with sincerity and lie you really mean it - a firm handshake, a good strong hug, etc. I also like the combination option, handshake and hug, hug and a kiss. There is also something special about a two handed handshake to convey sincerity and welcome. Some cultures have a follow up motion after a handshake of putting that hand over their heart. Nice touch I think. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
Moderators Gerr Posted March 3, 2012 Moderators Posted March 3, 2012 Yes, but folks seem to get upset if you squirt hand sanitizer either on their hands before you shake, or on yours after the hand shake. Hand sanitizers may be giving us a false sense of security. They are not very effective according to this: Hand Sanitizers vs. Soap and Water Quote
