Alchemy Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Are women created in the image of God? Gen. 1: 26-28; " Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (NKJV) We can clearly see man is created in the image of God. But, did God created woman in His image? Quote Luke 12:32 NKJV

"So God created man[kind] in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." I disagree completely. Scripture says God created man in His own image, then says God created both male and female. I can't find any Scripture that says God created females, or women, in the image of God. This Bible verse above says God only created man in His image. Your adding of "[kind]" in the verse Mr. Wetmore was quite distasteful. It should not be there as it changes the meaning of the Bible verse. Quote Luke 12:32 NKJV

It should not be there as it changes the meaning of the Bible verse. http://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H120&t=KJV The word "man" is "adam" in Hebrew, which means not only the name but also "mankind". Tom didn't add mankind to the verse, every educated translator in history did. Because that's what it means. Edit: That's not to say that the KJV translators weren't educated, but "man" and "mankind" are synonymous, so the meaning of the verse is understood. The Hebrew is quite clear that God created humans, male and female, in His image. And if you keep reading, God placed them both, male and female, in charge of all creation. The text says that the image of God is humanity, male and female and according to linguists it is the oneness of men and women that is the image of God. Either alone is half of the image of God. One of the problems with the Pagan gods is that they were either male or female, gods and goddess, and often needing to pair them up while the Biblical God so transcends this that the Bible writers were too afraid that just using one sex it describe God would lead to idolatry, and according to linguists, while our translations tend to translate as far as possible God in either the male or neuter sense. But according to those to translate the text that in the actual languages when it talks about God the authors consistently have it 50% male sense and 50% female sense. Although we believe in the priesthood of all believers, we need to use in our tool box the studies of linguists, the words, the poetic and other literary structures, archaeologists, historians, studies in the culture and geography theologians etc. Yes evaluate the evidence they give and thus agree or dissagree with their conclusions, but they present the information that we need to make a healthy decision. And in college and graduate school and studying the evidence is very strong for what Tom pointed out. Quote

Members phkrause Posted March 13, 2012 Members Posted March 13, 2012 Are women created in the image of God? But, did God created woman in His image? Here's the CJBs translation of those verse's: Gen. 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, in the likeness of ourselves; and let them rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the animals, and over all the earth, and over every crawling creature that crawls on the earth." 27 So God created humankind in his own image; in the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them: God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the air and every living creature that crawls on the earth." And to answer your question, yes women is created in the image of man. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Alchemy Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 I understand humankind is one of the possible translations for "man" in Genesis chapter one. But, just Adam himself is also one such possibility as well. How do you get mankind out of Genesis 1:27? I still say Tom is wrong to include the [kind] to Scripture! I would also say anyone else adding that is wrong as well. Quote Luke 12:32 NKJV
Alchemy Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 Read the interlinear translation of verse 27 here - http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/OTpdf/gen1.pdf You will see that the traditional English translation really does add pronouns and punctuation to it implying the distinction you are relying on. The Hebrew is quite clear that God created humans, male and female, in His image. And if you keep reading, God placed them both, male and female, in charge of all creation. Again, I can't garner your position from Scripture. Adam was clearly in charge since it was his sin that mattered most. Also, in 1 Cor. 11, Paul writes; "7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man is not from woman, but woman from man. 9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. 12 For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God." Woman gets her glory from man and woman is made for man. How is woman created in the image of God if she gets her glory from man? Now, in the Greek, this word for "man" is most notably used to describe a male! So, I don't agree with your understanding of the Hebrew or Scripture in general on these points. Quote Luke 12:32 NKJV
miz3 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 The verse includes both male and female as being created in His image... Rather plainly, in fact. "So God created man[kind] in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." I agree that the word "kind" does not follow the word "man" in the text. However the text and also the context of the passage makes it clear that God made women in His Image as well as males in His Image. I know that the thrust of this thread is to show that women are less than males but this concept is definitely not Biblical and this has already been shown before on Club Adventist. Quote
Dr. Rich Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 So much for the words of Paul again--as much as many here don't want to hear it, those words have caused many problems--here in the SDA church too as women have been deemed as second class because of those words. Quote

Well, I am not aware of anyone on Club Adventist trying to make women "second class", including me. But, I am trying to get to the bottom of what the Bible teaches. Gen. 1:27; "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." The Bible is very precise to ensure we understand He is talking about males only. The Hebrew word for "him" I put in bold letters predominantly means male or man in both humans and animals. The Bible also says God created both male and female, it only says man was created in the image of God. I find it interesting the phrase, I understand it to be a phrase at this point, would read "he him, male" in the KJV translation. He him and male all mean male. I find it interesting also the "He" would be talking about God! Quote Luke 12:32 NKJV

Moderators Kevin H Posted March 15, 2012 Moderators Posted March 15, 2012 Then please help my unstable mind and the millions of other christians who firmly believe that the man is the head of the woman. It has been pointed out that there are two ways to interpet "Head" one is like a boss or a leader, the other is order of creation like a lake being the head of a river. And that while tradition has people thinking Paul means the one definition, of being a leader or boss etc. linguists have pointed out that Paul's context is the order of creation not that one was higher than another.
