It isn't enough that we can't fund our schools in Texas, but now the powers that be have their noses in what cheerleaders are doing.

Was watching Leno,last night, and they mentioned this bill. So they suggested that things were getting out of hand, and had a new way to get around it. They showed a cheerleading squad doing the jumps and stuff. The male cheerleader come forward and shouts " Oven mitt" and puts on an oversided oven mitt and then proceeds to raise one of the girls up on his shoulder while placing the oven-mitt hand on her butt, with the resulting manuvere looking like a waiter with an oversized dish on the shoulder.

Ok, are cheerleading moves like this suggestive to some here?

I always thought that cheerleading WAS about sex. They are the ones who get picked for the homecoming queens. They are the ones that all the boys drool over.

I think it is highly inappropriate that girls EVER be allowed to participate in a school event where they are required to wear something as scantily clad as a cheerleader's outfit.

If some of the other girls in the school started coming to school in these outfits, they'd be asked to go home and change.

The other day in the mall I noticed a "nearly nude" picture of Carmen Electra. It was hanging in the window where everyone can see. If any woman, girl, man or boy were to be found walking around in the mall like this, he or she would be immediately taken into custody and forced to wear something less revealing.

It just doesn't make any sense.

Cheerleading has been getting out of hand here in Texas and our good legelislators have once again proven worthy of the trust placed on them. The issue that I heard was actually the cheers they were saying. The cheers were eluding to sex.

I do agree with Sister Christine but cheerleading is such a tradition we can't just ban it. Saddly, like I mentioned in another thread, many boys see girls as sex vending machines and cheerleading only contributes to that. I worked with a cheerleader when I was in college and she told me about a lot of sexually explicit parties they would have with the football team. Somehow a lot of those girls can't see they are just being used.

I guess what is most annoying is that we have a school finance crisis, and we are debating cheerleading stuff. Sounds like they are trying to dodge the bullet to me.

We are a state where the cry is local control. Why then is the state butting in on that local control. Seems like it is going to be hard to determine if hip shaking is to much or how much movement is going to be allowed. I know they will have some kind of sensors out at every high school football game determining if it is appropriate stuff those little girls are doing.

It is all a big bunch of stupidity to me, and a total waste of our legislators time.

One more way to get the Religious Right up-in-arms and redirect their attention from what is important and needs "finen" and what is a smoke-screen.

This is probably the only way that people could be made to think passing more laws to address less important issues would make them look good and not revisit the needs necessary for the good of our children's education.

Somehow I don't think the cheerleaders in Texas are doing anything much different than in other states. Moreover, are we to believe that these same kids don't watch the television or go to movies and the ball games are the only exposure they may have to "movements"

I don't remember who made the comment about Cheerleading and Homecoming Queens always being about sex. While I realize that is the age-old popular, prevalent mindset, I must say I feel a little ill-at-ease with the statement. Having been Jr High, High School Cheerleader and Home Coming Queen, perhaps I am taking it a little too personal, however, I seem to recall most of the "sexual activity" being done by those who were not on "the team" or wearing the crowns.

If local school boards were doing something about it, the state wouldn't have to. Would they?

Again, I have not followed the entire debate, but from what I heard the issue was the cheers, not the physical moves or dress of the cheerleaders. Cheers that elude to sexual conduct are not appropriate and should not be permitted. Actually if the coaches did their jobs, the school board would have to get involved.

Now you see there I go showing myself a moderate again. I am not for total local control.

Shall I also mention that the tumbling teams that many of our schools and colleges field are just as bad?

When I was teaching in a junior academy in Maryland, I remember walking into the gym the day after the tumbling team had gotten their new outfits. I distinctly remember noticing that I didn't have to wonder where each muscle was on each body - I knew by looking.

The very next year the girls refused to join that tumbling team because they said they were being "manhandled" by the boys.

What ever happened to parents. Don't you think that they parents are sitting their watching their little girls doing all this stuff. If the community deems it inappropriate, they can complain to the school board. Local control is about your community, but we want to take away the control if it isn't our way.

Simulating the sex act in a cheer is not my idea of fun; but if all the idiots in the stands and the parents don't care, I don't think we need the state to make a law to fix it.

I am by no means saying I agree with some of the movements and uniforms in vogue today. The only real purpose served by the passing of more laws would be to spin the governing body as "wholesome" thus gainning more right-wing votes. Oops, other than the obvious, changing the focus from the very reall issues within our public school systems.

Firstly, the laws would be virtually unenforceable. We can't even control drug trafficking, murders, road-rage, etc., our prisons and jails are over-crowded, courts systems are backed up for years.

After the first law is passed where do we draw the line? Drill Teams? As James said, Tumbling Teams. Certainly it will soon be necessary to pass additional laws to "control" the uniforms and movements of skaters? The list goes on .................

And, Shane, there are countries which allow no "total local control". Many did not loose their control in one swift act: It was taken away, a little at a time. Personally, I choose not to live in them .. do you?

What same people? Those that are opposed to the Religious Right. They think it is OK for the federal Supremem Court to remove authority from the local school boards about school prayer but they think it wrong for the democratically elected state legelature to ban pornographic cheers by cheerleaders.

Do you realize that Christ never got with the legislators of His day and said, "Let's get some laws to close down the whore houses." Why? Is He for sexual immortality? No...but He is not for force.

Face it, sex sells! Porno is everywhere....And young women realize the power that they have - the power of sexuality - the power of attention...That's what it is all about - self-seeking - look at me....

What they need is Christ...what they need is the gospel, restored. So get busy restoring it and get rid of the old guard.

The problem can be handled at the school level (and not through the legislators)....Draw a line...have a standard.

Of course human nature will always push those boundaries. So again, we need the gospel restored....We need the 3 angel's message with power (not this legalistic [censored] we are presenting now).

The devil knows what is he doing….He is getting the liberals to pee-off the conservatives….In the end the conservatives will combine the church and state so as to lord their legalistic laws [and gospel] over everyone….

Suppose I agree with you Shane. Why don't we go even further and be Totally Religiously Right. Let's pass laws about how a person should dress in public, walk and talk in public. Lets legislate proper behaviors everywhere; totally and completely; in our schools, parks, sidewalks, everywhere!

Oh, one thing: Who decides what is the proper way to cheer, walk, dress, talk, sing, or even how to wear our hair. And, to whom do we address in prayer and/or what words should be used in school prayers?

Can't you see that when you put your civil rights into the hands of the law-makers that you are giving them more and more authority to tell YOU how to think, act, dress, etc. You may agree with the powers that be at present. But, when a law is passed it is available for any future governing power to use at their interpretation.
