Administrators Naomi Posted April 7, 2012 Administrators Posted April 7, 2012 It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath day Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God
Administrators Naomi Posted April 7, 2012 Administrators Posted April 7, 2012 I disagree with your whole post. Pkrause, I must second your disagreement! Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God
SivartM Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I disagree with your whole post. Why? Woody Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Coming from a non-SDA - I can totally see where you are coming from fccool. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Woody Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 (Coming from an SDAs viewpoint - it doesn't have a leg to stand on.) Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
SivartM Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 But why? I'm seriously confused; what specifically is objectionable about fccool's post? I wouldn't have blinked if I heard someone say something like that in church or in the Adventist Review. I'm obviously missing something here... Woody Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 The answer to your question SivartM - is so extensive - that I would not know where to begin and don't care to at this time. Perhaps someone else has the energy. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

But we have been told it would take too long to answer. I understand your post and have agreement with it, as I understand it. Quote

Dr. Rich Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 fccool, I am sure many people feel the way you do and that fine for them I suppose, but on the other hand, this is not what many others feel the Sabbath is all about. It's clear to me that the Sabbath is to be enjoyed so I doubt if that word "pleasure" is a correct understanding as people in the past have thought. Many have thought that a man and wife should not have sex on Sabbath because of this misunderstanding. Same for playing games (golf, tennis, swimming, football, etc.... Read the commandment again and see if you can come to a correct understanding. Happy Easter everyone. Quote
BobRyan Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Isaiah 58 - says that on the Sabbath we are to - turn aside from Quote: --"13 doing your own pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The Holy Day of the LORD honorable, And honor it, desisting from your own ways, From seeking your own pleasure And speaking your own word,14 Then you will take delight in the LORD, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.'' In Lev 23 we are told that it is a day of holy convocation. In Isaiah 66 "from Sabbath to Sabbath...shall all mankind come before Me to worship" - it is a day to worship God. And Jesus points out in Mark 2 that it is a day for relieving human suffering. But denigrating Sabbath to a "day to play football or get in some quality tennis time " misses the point entirely. in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.
Woody Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 From what I've heard - if you can quote a Bible verse in between each tennis strike - then it's okay. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted April 9, 2012 Administrators Posted April 9, 2012 To understand the two verses of Isaiah 58 about the Sabbath you have to read the beginning of the chapter. A closer translation of the "doing your own pleasure" is "doing as you please" which is ver specifically explained at the beginning of the chapter. Context is important. The beginning of the chapter also gives a clear indication of the true worship that is the delight of the Lord. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
BobRyan Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 From what I've heard - if you can quote a Bible verse in between each tennis strike - then it's okay. Indeed - I think that is how some people view it. I guess if you don't look at the list of texts I provided that speak to the subject in all of its aspects - you might end up there. Isaiah 58 does not give us the either-or instruction some have suggested. It does not say "either you show compassion OR you call the Sabbath a delight by not doing or seeking your own pleasure" - neither does it say "if you show compassion then you are not speaking your own word on the Sabbath". Rather we are to do both according to the text! here is where some readers struggle. in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.

I do not agree Bob, but I will not force you to play a tennis game with me on sabbath or go fishing. Look, I do not make money by playing tennis or fishing as making money for my own use is set aside for six days. I am sure you will find all kinds of ideas here because I too have found people with all kinds of ideas all over the world. Many could wade but not swim. Ha Ha Ha as I call these people silly. Many refuse to cook on Sabbath or eat out. That is entirely up to them and it's their choice. Actually, the fourth commandment does not say anything about worshipping God on that day--just to set it apart from the other six days by remember who it was that created you. Quote
LifeHiscost Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 The only reason why I can see the point of the text is missed is many feel God is seen as not intelligent enough to put his ideas down in language that doesn't allow them to run free without restrictive guidelines, much like the enebriate cannot understand why he/she is responsible for his/her auto leaving the road and flipping upside down when going around a sharp 90 degree corner at 110 miles per hour with the pedal to the metal. God blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
gluck3d Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 ... If there are jobs which demand the time away from my son's few important activities, and can't possibly wait a day for whatever "emergency" that exists, these jobs are not for me. These are simply not helping my relationship with my son. These are killing that relationship. ... Can't support my post by Bible quotes (cause I've never studied it, just had a quick read in Uni), but it looks a bit confusing to me. The idea that I've quoted from you works only if there as always someone else who can do 'these jobs' for you. But what about doctors, firefighters etc? No matter you like it or not, does you religion say you to spend a day worshiping or not, you have to do your job. While I can easily understand the idea that someone can pray to not have this emergency work on Sabbath. Quote
