Kountzer Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 My folks, grand parents, great grandparents, had some land. Land in the country town of Silsbee. Land in the city, Houston. Not a lot of land. I don't know how much. Other than land, we were poor, or close to being poor. We didn't know it though. I've never thought of myself as being poor. I went to an elementary school down the hill from my grandparent's house. The school had a lot of land and trees on it. We would play games on that land at recess. My grandparents sold the land to the black school district. True story. The name of the elementary school was Frank Robinson Elementary School. It was named after Frank Robinson, who was the superintendent of the black school district at one time. This was way before integration came along. Frank Robinson had a grandson who had the same name, lil Frank Robinson. My Aunts and Uncles say lil Frankie was always walking around with a baseball and glove, looking for someone to play catch with. When he couldn't find anyone he would throw the ball way up in the air and run and catch it. LIl Frankie Robinson grew up to become a hall of fame major league baseball player. Yep, I'm talking about that Frank Robinson. Again, True story. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
bonnie Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 My observation is that most people who succeed in anything, or get out of poverty for that matter, do so with SOME help from someone along the way. Read the inspiring story of Marquise Lee in the Orange County Register (newspaper). People that succeed out of poverty or in most any endeavor follow "Do your best and God will do the rest" God doing the rest may be placing someone in your path that offers an opportunity, sometimes even an obstacle to what you think is best for you. Those that don't succeed, blame others for not doing their best. They want others to do their best,God to bless them thru the efforts of others and then life is fair and they can be successful. I would guess in the example you gave that the parties did their best, letting God do the rest, thru various means. Doubtful if they would have been sucessful "Occupying Wall Street" as their best Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this. Quotes by Susan Gottesman
Kountzer Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Not to take away from his story, because he has definitely been through and overcome a lot, based on what I've read. What happens to a person whose beliefs run counter to established sports trends in the USA, and probably elsewhere? If you're going to play sports, and make money doing it, you're going to have to play on friday nights, and on saturdays. In the NFL you will definitely practice on the sabbath. Just saying.. For a christian SDA it is a no-brainer. If your goals run counter to your religious beliefs the way is clear. Success doesn't necessarily mean wealth or fame. Doesn't mean to achieve a decent modest life will have someone going ahead of you to remove all obstacles in your path.Doesn't mean it will be easy. I don't know about you,but I have known many over the years that have never exceeded over 40,000.00 a year, never have been or will be famous.Modest homes well cared for, children well behaved and clean etc. Success is not fame or wealth, except to those that spend their days in envy or thinking that is the key to happiness. What really grabbed me about the story on Marquise Lee (if that is what you are referring to in the above comment)is not only the young man's hard work, but rather the BIG hearted couple who took him in. As I already pointed out, most people who succeed in anything or get out of poverty do so because someone extended a helping hand. Quote

In ne way or another,of course.I can guarantee you the helping hand doesn't come very frequently for those saying I am poor and can't do anything,"Give Me" Nor do I believe Marquise Lee sat there until the kind hearted person came along. Pretty sure he would not have been spending his time at "Occupy Wall Street" Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Moderators Gerr Posted April 26, 2012 Author Moderators Posted April 26, 2012 This is the second time you have brought up Occupy Wall St. This is another issue altogether. The occupiers were protesting the GREED. Somebody ALWAYS suffers from someone's greed. Quote
Moderators Gerr Posted April 26, 2012 Author Moderators Posted April 26, 2012 Maybe football is the Lord's way of helping him. For non-SDAs, whether it's God's way or not, sports is a legitimate way to get out of poverty. For SDAs, there are many other avenues out of poverty. As I see it, the quickest way out of poverty is education/acquiring a marketable skill. Quote
Kountzer Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 my step daughter was told she can order her cap & gown for her graduation, with an mba, from tulane. she's already a stock broker at a major bank. Stuff I never dreamed of. So, I guess it can be done. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
