LifeHiscost Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I made a measured judgment call when I watched a video of Wright when he revealed "God Damn, America" was preferable to him as opposed to God Bless America. It seems if he was inspired to speak that as a prayer, God fulfilled his request. Now we can all say an act of God is happening to America, Yeah, right!!!! God blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
JoeMo Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 LHC, Maybe I am missing the sarcasm in your post. If so, please tell me you are being sarcastic. I am shocked that anyone would say the bad things happening in this country (or elsewhere in the world) are God's judgement. God is good; He is the author of grace not curses. All the bad stuff if satanic attack; not God's judgement. In Matthew 24, jesus says he will cut these days short for the sake of His elect. His precedent is that he would have spared Sodom and Gomorrah for the sake of just a few just people. I know my post here is a little "off-topic"; but I had to say that. <end of rant> Back to topic. LifeHiscost Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Quote: Maybe I am missing the sarcasm in your post. You made the call right. I wonder if sarcasm is an inappropriate gift? LoL It seems anything that is said more than once in the topics is unappreciated as unoriginal so I try to make up my own, some times hard to understand, culture-speak. OTOH, I'm surprised you don't recognize an "act of God" often connected to anything that is responsible for major misery or death decrees. God blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
JoeMo Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 LHC, I can appreciate sarcasm - Thanks for clearing that up ! I have had my sarcastic side mis-read before here - no fun. As far as recognizing an "act of God" as being connected to anything that is responsible for major misery or death decrees, I just don't see God as vindictive or mean; especially since He already took out all of His anger on Jesus. If Jesus paid the price, why should we have to pay more? satan is the one roaming the earth seeking who he may devour. If Jesus died to save us, and if God is love, why would God do things to hurt us? I agree that there will come a time where He must put an end to sin; but if I read my Bible correctly, that is not until the end of the millennium. Quote

Do you have a link to that sermon? Personally I'd like to see that statement in context as to what he actually meant. But don't mistake my liking him to condoning that kind of saying in Church. Like I said, Amos: Amos 2:6 This is what the Lord says: “For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent. They sell the innocent for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. 7 They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name. 8 They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge. In the house of their god they drink wine taken as fines. LifeHiscost Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I thought this to be an excellent article and it proved to diffuse some of my own "righteous indignation" while still maintaining there must have been some better words to express Jerimiah Wright's "righteous indignation", especially in this day and age that most of the good things America is responsible for are dismissed while heaping insults on her. CHRISTIAN NEWSWIRE Quote: "Attack on Wright for 'God Damn America' is Insightful Contact: Gary McCullough, Christian Newswire, 202-546-0054 OPINION, April 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- Gary McCullough submits the following for publication and is available for comment: When I first heard Rev. Jeremiah Wright's "God damn America" quote I was concerned by the media's use of it, but as a McCain supporter I felt little obligation to say anything. Here we are weeks later and this morning on a nationally syndicated radio talk show the host referred to this quote as the "top of his list" as he snickered and played the quote. Before I continue with my criticism, you should know that I will be working against the election of Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. I sided with Obama's last political opponent, Alan Keyes, whom I consider a friend and a client. And I will most assuredly support Obama's next opponent, whomever that may be. Furthermore, I do not know Rev. Wright. I do not know his opinions on Israel, race relations or the origination of the HIV. As is with the vast majority of our nation, my opinion of Rev. Wright has been formed by snippets of his sermons replayed ad nauseam on talk radio and cable news. As a strident anti-abortion activist, I have listened to countless sermons that have included the speakers commenting on God's judgment of America for the destruction of innocent life. So when I first heard Wright's "most popular" quote, "God bless America ... No! ... God damn America ... for killing innocent people ... for treating her citizens as less than human," I said to myself, "Obama's pastor sounds like he is pro-life." Monday at the National Press Club Rev. Wright pointed out an indispensable foundation for the attacks he is receiving -- the misunderstanding of the style of prayer and preaching used in black churches today. Can I hear an Amen? I have been the only "white guy" in church several times, in America and overseas. What best describes my experiences may be summed up by something told to me by a wise Irishman; that we are a people divided by a common language. The troubles comes when we, whether Irish to American, Catholic to Protestant, or black parishioner to white, hear or say something and assume it is clearly understood because of our common language. The phrase used most often to pigeon hole Rev. Wright would receive several hearty Amens in most churches across America if only the word "damn" was replaced by "judge." "God bless America ... No! ... God judge America ... for killing innocent people ... for treating her citizens as less than human." For twenty-years, it has been my job to present ministers and pro-life leaders to the media. More than most, I have seen, first-hand, the abuse of a quote by the media for ratings or agenda. Many print articles and broadcast segments have been built entirely upon taking a single quote, and assigned a sensational meaning to it. I probably would walk out in the middle of a Jeremiah Wright sermon, based on what I have seen in the media. But I have been a hypocrite to not defend Wright after my two decades of berating reporters for similar attacks upon my clients and friends. What was true in the defense of my friends is true in regard to Rev. Wright; the deliberate misuse of a quote is a signal, a tripwire if you will, that the truth behind the man's message is most likely too difficult to face. In the case of abortion, the possibility that innocent babies being put to death is far too disturbing to face -- so the media focuses on faults with the messenger or flaws in the structure of the message. My repeated experiences with the media leads me to now ask what is that truth behind Rev. Wright's message which is far too disturbing to face. ----------------------------- Gary McCullough is the director of the nation's leading religious newswire, Christian Newswire, www.ChristianNewswire.com. While I'm of the opinion thar certain laws that are promoted for penalties of adultery cannot be justified by any religious organization, I'm wondering if similar extrapolations of principle by the media, placed on the character of the President of the U. S. could also be mitigated if someone were so inclined as to write as positive a letter as the above in his defense. Sometimes it does seem as if freedom of speech, totally unrestricted, definitely has its' limitations. Especially when the injunction, "Thou shalt not bear false witness" is no longer considered to be a proper function of a civilized society. God blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!

Moderators Bravus Posted August 29, 2012 Moderators Posted August 29, 2012 There was that old line Tony Campolo used to do: "I give a damn that people are not saved. And right now, more of you are concerned about the fact that I said the word 'damn' than about the people who are not saved." Or words to that effect: perhaps less powerful now when such language is more common, but still a telling point about our priorities, I think. Quote Truth is important

What would be good is if we listen to the context of his message, and not just the words that were taken out of context to bring a certain point across, or like Bill O'Reilly likes to say "this is a no spin zone."
