MarysRoses Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 The Seven Hills..... Just an interesting point. The Seven Hills which ancient Rome was built upon are on the EAST side of the Tiber River. The central hill is the Palatine (Palatium), the sight of the founding of the city and the most ancient settlements. Then there are Capitolium, Quirinalis, Viminalis, Esquiliae, Caelius, and seperated from the previous six by the valley of the Circus Maximus is the Aventinus. All on the East side of the Tiber. On the west side of the Tiber, settled later and not part of the 'Seven Hills of Rome' are the Pincus, Janiculum (the Janiculum is more of a ridge and at the time of the Etruscans was the northern border of Rome). North of the Janiculum is Vaticanus Hill. The Vatican is built on Vatican (Vaticanus) Hill, *not* one of the ancient seven hills, and is on the WEST side of the Tiber river. So its on one hill, not on the 'seven hills'. Not even on one of the ancient seven, but across the river. Mary Quote
