Woody Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Who is the best theologian in our church? And I don't want to see biases such as the issues of WO etc. I want to know who is the smartest theologian in our church. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Members phkrause Posted October 20, 2012 Members Posted October 20, 2012 I guess to really answer that Woody, each one of us would have to know every single one and have had an opportunity to have heard them for a little while! Would you not agree? So having said that, my first answer would be Doug Batchelor. The reason would be that from all the ones I've heard, he's been the one that I've followed the most. Now having said that! LOL! I will throw out this name, Dean Davis, he has worked for the AUC for many years and I have heard him much more than DB, so he would be my first choice, I guess, in the context of what I mentioned in the very beginning of my statement! Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Woody Posted October 20, 2012 Author Posted October 20, 2012 Never heard of Dean Davis. Has he written any books? Can you tell me more about what he does or has done? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators Gerr Posted October 20, 2012 Moderators Posted October 20, 2012 Never heard of Dean Davis. Has he written any books? Can you tell me more about what he does or has done? That's why there's no way to know who the best/smartest SDA theologian is. But why do you ask? Quote
Members phkrause Posted October 20, 2012 Members Posted October 20, 2012 Sadly I say I can't tell you if he's written any books. He did write an article in the 3ABN magazine a few months back. He has been the main guy at AUC for many years, head of the department. Also from what I've heard from other pastors, etc., he is one of or the leading OT scholar around. Seems most look to him for answers. To me he is a very close second to Jon Paulien as far as the book of Revelations is concerned. Now that I've mentioned Jon Paulien, I would also consider him as one of the churches top theologians also. Again as I say, your answer to your question will be people that you know best. So the ones I've picked are ones I know best, but there are probably a number of others that I've not thought of at this moment. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Woody Posted October 20, 2012 Author Posted October 20, 2012 Yes pk. I am sure there are many others. That is why I posed this question. I wanted to hear about ones I don't know about. So appreciate your contribution of the name of Dean Davis. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Dr. Waite Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Probably A. T. Jones or E.J. Waggoner who gave the 1888 message. Quote grw

Robert Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Who is the best theologian in our church? Retired? Pastor Jack Sequeira!!!! Jack's web site Quote
JoeMo Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 One of my favorite SDA theologians has to be Doug Batchelor. I say that with tongue in cheek, because I'm a raging liberal; and Doug is super conservative. Yet, in my correspondence with Doug, he has always been fair, open-minded, and engaging. He holds himself responsible for his personal conservative leaning; but doesn't seem to impose the conservative bent on others. I also respect him because he has lived on both sides of the line; and has thoughtfully chosen which side of the line he wants to live on. Another SDA theologian I respect is Ty Gibson. He is also quite conservative (even radically so in years past), but the Holy Spirit got hold of him, and I find some of his more recent musings engaging. I say "more recent"; but that is a relative term. I haven't read much by either TY or Doug in recent years; because my favorite theologians over the past 5 years have not been Adventists; they have been charismatics - Bill Johnson and Leif Hetland. Woody Posted October 20, 2012 Author Posted October 20, 2012 Any more peoples? Let's keep this rolling ........ I would prefer though if we could limit this to the living. Members phkrause Posted October 20, 2012 Members Posted October 20, 2012 Joe Crews I always enjoyed listening to Joe Crews, but as Woody mentioned, lets keep to the living ones. Administrators Gail Posted October 21, 2012 Administrators Posted October 21, 2012 It's too bad you only want the living ones, cause I would have added Leslie Hardinge Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Woody Posted October 21, 2012 Author Posted October 21, 2012 I am mostly interested in the living Gail. But if people want to do as Gibs did and list both that is fine. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators John317 Posted October 21, 2012 Moderators Posted October 21, 2012 I don't think we have one person who qualifies as "the smartest theologian." We have quite a few, though, who qualify as very intelligent, gifted theologians. On my list would be Herbert Douglass, Dennis E. Priebe, Clifford Goldstein, Ranko Stefanovic, Niels-Erik Andreasen, William E. Shea, Jon Paulien, Gerhard Pfandl, Roy Gane, Erwin Gane, and Mervin Moore. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Woody Posted October 21, 2012 Author Posted October 21, 2012 Thanks John. Nice list. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Woody Posted October 21, 2012 Author Posted October 21, 2012 If I might add one to the list: Jo Ann Davidson Granted - she is a woman. Hope that doesn't disqualify her. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
olger Posted October 21, 2012 Posted October 21, 2012 Steve Bohr is one of our most careful and thorough scholars. Winfried Vogel is good. Philip Samaan is good. George Reid is one of our clearest thinkers - getting old. Lewis Walton - very sharp thinker. Mike Hasel is good. Ed Zinke is good. Dwayne lemon is great. A real up-and-comer. That's all, folks g That is a pretty good list you have there. Dwayne had been teaching Bible study classes in my area on Monday nights this past year - until a few guys worked in such a way as to claim that no one should be allowed to do a Bible study class on week nights at that particular church unless they were licensed ministers (or something like that). in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." BobRyan Posted October 21, 2012 Posted October 21, 2012 The present living, Walter Veith Vieth has a lot of good material and has been responsible for a number of people turning not only to be Christian from atheist etc - but for people choosing to be Adventist Christians. in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." Woody Posted October 21, 2012 Author Posted October 21, 2012 well we are coming up with a lot of nominations. Good Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
