There are five excellent Study Bibles put out by SDAs: (1) The Deluxe Study Bible with the Adventist Hymnal (by Mission Publishing). This is a favorite of mine. It includes the comments of EGW in vol 7-A of the SDA Bible Commentary, as well as many other Bible helps. Contains many excellent maps and diagrams. 2) The Remnant Study Bible. 3) The Andrews Study Bible. 4) The Amazing Facts Study Bible, which includes the Bible studies written and published by Doug Batchelor. 5) The King James Version with HMS Richards Bible helps. The New King James Version is also published with HMS Richards' study helps. I'd also like to mention a few very good non-SDA Study Bibles: 1) The ESV Study Bible, published by Zondervan. This is one of the best study Bibles I know of, and the translation (English Standard Version) is excellent. 2) The Life Application Study Bible (New King James Version or King James Version). Published by Tyndale. 3) The HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible) Study Bible. Wonderful Bible!! 4) The Holman King James Study Bible-- it has virtually the same notes as the HCSB. 5) The Nelson Study Bible published by Thomas Nelson. The text is the New King James Version, and the notes are some of the best I've seen in a study Bible. A virtual library. 6) The Zondervan TNIV Study Bible-- Today's New International Version. 7) Harper Study Bible-- text is the New Revised Standard Version and commentary is written by Harold Lindsell, former editor of Christianity Today. Almost all his notes are in harmony with SDA theology, even though Lindsell was not SDA. It isn't there! See the verse and you will KNOW why! Matthew 17:21 King James Version (KJV) 21 "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." This verse is eliminated, completely GONE, LEFT OUT of the NIV version of the Bible! The New International Version deletes over 64,000 words! including words like: Godhead, regeneration, mercyseat, Calvary, remission, Jehovah, immutable, omnipotent, Comforter, Holy Ghost, Messiah, quickened, infallible, et cetera. Most of the modern Bibles line up very closely with the NIV. A number of brothers and sisters, after examining the facts, have said, "I'm getting a King James!" Many have shared what a blessing the King James Bible has been to them and their spiritual life. The King James isn't hard. I've seen one and two year olds quoting it and I am not exaggerating. I've taught it to people who cannot read and to children whose second language is English. I actually find the modern Bibles more difficult to read than the King James. If you stick to the NIV without consulting the Greek or other translations, you'd be confused about the sanctuary in Heb 8 & 9. So far, I have found the ESV to be the most accurate of the dozen or so translations that I have. But even this comes short in some passages. The best way to do in-depth study that I have found so far is to consult several translations and also checking what the original language really says. I'm neither a Hebrew nor Greek scholar, but we now have access to lexicons that explain what they mean. Quote

That was my first study Bible, but I became tired with the 'thou, thine, -eth,' and all the archaic words. NT Greek was not the classical Greek; it was the Greek (koine) spoken by the people. Quote

We had them on sale at the time I got mine. Also, I would say that the Mission KJV is one of my favourites, with its prophecy charts and maps and even genealogies of pharaohs and kings placed right where they are being talked about. They are pretty hard to come by nowadays, and I am not sure why that is. When people talk about the verses missing out of the NIV, they don't usually tell you that there was material that the KJV has added in. At least the NIV gives notations letting you know what the differences are in which manuscripts. I do also possess a Tyndale Life Application Study Bible, but mine is the Chronological NLT. It really is interesting to use a variety. Last night I was researching out Job 26:12, 13, to see what is meant by the "Rahab". I don't know if I got any conclusive answer, but it was an interesting study. I didn't put those Study Bibles up here in order to debate about the texts. I was under the impression that you are genuinely looking for a study Bible. Now I realize that you wanted to debate another issue. Why didn't you say so, in the beginning? As for Matt. 17: 21, it is missing in the NIV and most other translations because the Critical Greek text of the NT omits it. And the reason the Critical Text omits it is that it does not occur in the oldest manuscripts of Matthew. But if you want to keep it in, that's fine. So stay with the translations that are based on the Majority Text or the Received Text: The New King James Version and the King James Version. It is false, however, to claim the NIV is not "a real Bible" simply because it often follows the Critical Text of the NT and did so at Matt. 17: 21. At any rate, the NIV has the same verse at Mark 9: 29. Check it out. If the NIV was attempting to hide something by eliminating Matt. 17: 21, they surely would have also taken out Mark 9: 21. No one is claiming that the NIV is a perfect translation. But then neither are the King James Verion or the New King James Version perfect translations. A perfect translation of the Bible simply does not exist. All you can hope to get is an excellent one-- never one that's perfect. Every translation-- of any book!-- could be improved, as can anything that's made by imperfect human beings. You should be able to get it-- or order it if it's not in stock-- at the Adventist Book Center. I haven't looked but I would be surprised if you couldn't also order it online. That's the Bible I would prefer to have if I were on a deserted island and could only have one Bible. I love the Adventist hymnal that comes with it, and all the good study helps. A parallel Bible is good for this purpose. I often use one that contains the KJV, the Amplified, the NASB, and the New International Version. They also make a parallel NT which has 8 different translations for comparison. Whenever there's any doubt, I also compare the three main Greek texts of the NT, which tell me the manuscript evidence for any difference between them. The NIV is a favorite translation of mine, but it isn't true that it's "the most accurate version of the Bible." The NIV is not a literal translation. The most accurate (NOT perfect!) translations are Jay P. Green Sr.'s Interlinear Bible, also Green's Modern King James Version; Young's Literal Translation, Rotherham's Emphasized Bible, the New American Standard Bible, and the English Standard Version. If someone wants the most faithful and readable translation of the Critical Text of the Greek NT, they should study the New Testament in the New American Bible (NAB). It's incorrect/misleading to label these verses as "missing." The reason the Critical Text does not contain those verses is that many if not most textual scholars judge them to have been omitted from the original manuscripts. And the reason scholars believe this is that those verses don't occur in the most ancient manuscripts. The scholars may be wrong in their judgment of the Bible manuscripts, but at least they are not omitting verses or words because of some conspiracy to deceive people. You can find all of the NT doctrines in both the Received Text and the Critical Text. Would you classify yourself as being among the "King James Only" crowd? I learned to read in first and second grades by reading the King James Version, and I still study from it today. So I am not at all opposed to the KJV, but I do enjoy reading other translations. But while I wouldn't discourage people from reading the KJV, neither would I tell people who are reading the NIV that the NIV is "not a real Bible." It is one thing to point out differences and advantages of one translation over another, but it is something entirely different to tell people that their Bible is "not a real Bible." God has used both the NIV and the New King James Version to bring the blessings of His truth to millions of people. Please notice that the New American Standard Bible has the following note in its margin about Matt. 12: 47: "This verse is not found in the early mss." You will find a parallel of Matt. 12: 47 included in the NIV at Mark 3: 32. Yes, variety of translations often helps. Did you also see Job 9: 13 where it mentions "Rahab"? There's a very helpful comment about "Rahab" in the Harper's Study Bible (RSV): "...a mythological figure who symbolizes the power of evil over which Yahweh, Israel's God, gained a significant victory in primordial times (cf. As I pointed out earlier, this same verse is found in a parallel verse at Mark 9: 29. Therefore if NIV readers turn to Mark 9: 29, they will see the same thought as found in the KJV at Matt. 17: 21. The reason the Jehovah's Witnesses NWT does not contain Matt. 17: 21 is that it is a translation of the Wescott and Hort Greek Text, which is similar to the Critical Text, a basic Greek text of the NIV.
