Something interesting I've recently learned is: Matthew 17:21 (King James Version) try finding THIS verse in the NIV!!! It isn't there! See the verse and you will KNOW why! ...WHOLE Bible verses deleted in the NIV The following WHOLE verses have been removed in the NIV--whether in the text or footnotes...over 40 IN ALL!!! ....Matthew 18:11 -- COMPLETELY removed [also deleted from the Jehovah's Witness "Bible"]. What are you NIV readers missing? "For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost." If NIV readers go to Luke 19: 10, they will see "For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost." Those words almost certainly were not a part of the original text of Matt. 18. Since they are found in Luke 19: 10, you can be sure that no one was trying to take them out of the Bible. Otherwise, they would have also removed them from Luke 19: 10. Therefore, in this case, it is not a matter of Matt. 18: 11 being "missing" in the NIV. Rather, it is a matter of the KJV having "added" verses by being based on the Received Text. Either way, it doesn't matter as far as Christian doctrine is concerned. God's truth is found in both the Critical Text and the Received Text. The New International Version deletes over 64,000 words! ...WHOLE Bible verses deleted in the NIV The following WHOLE verses have been removed in the NIV--whether in the text or footnotes...over 40 IN ALL!!! ...Matthew 21:44 -- removed in the footnotes Why are they "removed in the footnotes"? You'll find the same words in the NIV at Luke 20: 18. These words were probably added to Matt. 21: 44, since they are not found in the earliest manuscripts of Matthew's Gospel. The point here is that there can be no doubt that they are a genuine part of our Bible. Nothing is lost by not having them at Matt. 21: 44. If you read a modern Bible, don't let your pride get in the way of really looking at this information. Some people get hostile because I'm sharing these facts. Look up the verses and see that what you call the Bible is not the Bible. ...WHOLE Bible verses deleted in the NIV The following WHOLE verses have been removed in the NIV--whether in the text or footnotes...over 40 IN ALL!!! ...Matthew 23:14 -- COMPLETELY removed [also deleted from the Jehovah's Witness "Bible"]. What are you NIV readers missing? "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation." Not completely removed, since NIV readers as well as NWT readers will find those words if they but turn in their Bibles to Mark 12: 40 or Luke 20: 47. They almost certainly were not a part of the original text of Matt. 23: 14. They don't occur in the earliest manuscripts, and even the later manuscripts which do contain them have them in different places within the texts. Mark 7:16 -- COMPLETELY removed [also deleted from the Jehovah's Witness "Bible"]. What are you NIV readers missing? "If any man have ears to hear, let him hear." You'll find them in the NIV and NWT and in all other translations at Mark 4: 9 and 23. They are omitted in the Critical Text because they don't appear in the important Alexandrian manuscripts upon which Westcott and Hort's Greek Text as well as today's Critical Text are based. We may not agree with the decision to keep them out of the Critical Text, but there's no doubt that the editors had logical reasons to omit them. Nothing is lost by not having them at Mark 9: 44. If you believe something important is lost, please tell us what it is. Again, the reason they are also "missing" from the Jehovah's Witness "Bible" is that both translations are made on the basis of similar Greek texts. All of New Testament theology can be found in the Critical Text.If you believe a Bible doctrine cannot be found in the Critical Text, please tell us what it is. All NIV readers (as well as readers of the NWT*) need to do is turn in their Bibles to Matt. 6: 15 and they will see the same words. *The NWT is a very poor-- not to say ugly!-- translation of the Bible, so I wouldn't recommend it for study or even for reading. About the only chapter I like in the NWT is the first Psalm. A very good example of its ugliness is found in the twenty-third Psalm. Then someone came in and randomly posted about the KJV version and hijacked the thread and I sadly played along with it. I apologize for the first part of that post, because I wrongly thought Jeremiah 33: 3 was the one who asked about study Bibles. I'm glad you found the suggestions very helpful. The King James conformable to the edition of 1611--NOT the New King James or the KJ21, etc. they are not King James Bibles. PS and remember...no lazy people will be found in Heaven. Are you aware that Ellen G. White used other translations besides the KJV? Among them were the Revised version, which is based on Westcott and Hort's text, the same one that the New World Translation is based on. Moderators John317 Posted November 5, 2012 Moderators Posted November 5, 2012 Getting back finally to the subject of Study Bibles, here are a few more very good ones: 1) The Open Bible (KJV). I believe it is also published in at least one other translation. Has very good introductions to the books of the Bible. 2) The Hebrew-Greek Key-Word Study Bible. (AMG Publishers, Chattanooga, TN) It comes in the New American Standard Version and in the King James Version. At the back is Strong's Hebrew and Greek dictionaries. Many words in the text are numbered to coincide with the dictionaries. It has very good references, and wide margins for your own notes, etc. 3) The New Inductive Study Bible-- New American Standard Bible, Updated Edition. Harvest House Publishers. A wonderful Bible for getting to know the Scriptures on the basis of your own reading of entire books rather than "proof-texting." It also has lots of maps scattered throughout the Bible, as well as nice, wide margins for notes, etc. There is also the (original) Inductive Study Bible, published about 15 years ago, which is larger and contains bigger margins. One of my favorites. 4) The Spirit of the Reformation Bible (NIV). Published by Zondervan. All of its comments are Reform (i.e, influenced by Calvin), and at the back are the catechisms and confessions of the Reformed Protestant churches. These are not authoritative for me, but it is interesting to read them: the Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession, the Canons of Dort, the Westminister Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism, and the Shorter Catechism. All of the above include what they believe are Scriptural proofs for their doctrines. 5) Thompson Chain Reference. Comes in either the King James Version or the New American Standard. Wonderful way to study the Scriptures. One problem with this Bible is that it doesn't give you much room for your own notes. Among other things, it claims that Matt. 28: 19 was not a part of the original text of the Bible and says that the Roman Catholic Church changed it in the second century to read as we have it today. I would like to ask, what's the manuscript evidence that this is true? Don't all of the Greek manuscripts containing the end of Matthew's Gospel read exactly the same way at Matt. 28: 19? The writer of the site also neglects to say that Ellen G. White often quotes Matt. 28: 19 just as we read it today and she never gives any hint whatsoever that it was changed. As a matter of fact, Ellen White says that we shouldn't try to go through the Bible and separate the Inspired from the uninspired. Personally I accept the Critical Text, the Majority Text, and the Received Text-- all three-- as the Word of God. Similarly, I have no trouble accepting both the Hebrew Bible and the Greek translation (LXX) as the Word of God, even though there are significant differences between them. Saint Paul and the Gospel writers didn't hesitate to classify the LXX as God's Word, and yet there's a greater difference between the LXX and the Hebrew text than there is between the Received Text and the Critical Text. Mine has Vandeman studies at the end... Thomas Nelson hasn't had any for a while BUT I think they were going to re-release it (YAY!) It could be available now... The awesome thing I like about the Open Bible is the Cyclopedic Index found at the beginning of the Bible. Administrators Gail Posted November 5, 2012 Administrators Posted November 5, 2012 That's true! You know, I don't have one of those Prophecy study Bibles from Amazing Facts. I think it is because I have the Open Bible with quite a few of the same features and mine is in the King James. I did have a NKJV once as my main Bible but I didn't like the version as much plus that bonded leather one only lasted two years before the binding went on it.
