Is God Responsible for the Killings?

Someone on this board suggested that the Lord had a hand in the elementary school killings.

What do you think?

May we be one so that the world may be won.

Only in the sense that God is the author of cause and effect. ESV | ‎Ex 4:11 Then the LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?"

Maybe the Bill of Rights caused the shooting.

And perhaps the father, who is a rich CEO of a big company somewhere and is remarried, had abandoned his duty to help raise this handicapped child. The child then grew up with only his mother, who didn't have the emotional or financial ability to have him treated by a trained facility [for his handicap, whatever it was]. He grew up resentful of his family for apparently abandoning him. Probably his mother was giving him all the love and discipline she was able to give, but he misinterpreted it as "picking on him," so he killed her first. Then he proceeded to kill the children whom she loved and to whom she had dedicated her life. The shooter was mentally unstable, obviously. But the thing that appalls me is that he had access to all those GUNS -- all of which were (reportedly) legally purchased.

The person responsible for the killings is the man that pulled the trigger. He is dead, so at this point in time anything beyond that seems irrelevant.

What is important is that right now there are 36 - 40 parents trying to wrap their heads around the fact that the little bundle of joy that had totally captivated their hearts is no longer there. They are sitting in their childs bedroom, looking at the presents they got them for Christmas, trying to remember if they told them they loved them this morning, and without a doubt in many cases fielding the blame onto themselves in some way.

There are the families of the dead teachers doing much the same thing.

There are also the parents of all the children that survived wondering, while rejoicing that their children lived, but still wondering about the psychological damage their children may have suffered today. Wondering how badly their kids have been screwed up by this.

Last but not least is the family of the shooter. Today they lost a son and brother and a wife. They are also under scrutiny and without a doubt beating themselves senseless over it.

I think, and this is just my opinion, that rather than looking for a place to lay blame - be it some God, Devil or otherwise, we should each of us hug our children, call those we love and tell them that we do, and send our deepest sympathies to those I listed above.

I've listened to the news most of the day and did not hear that he had "access" to the guns he obtained at her home.

This bothers me too! Did the woman need all those guns for protection? It is argued that guns do not kill people, but rather those who pull the trigger do the killing.

My question is: Aren't we making it very easy for deranged individuals to carry out their mass murders?

Imagine if Adam's mother had only one simple gun; how many children would he have been able to murder?

Do people really need high powered rifles for personal protection?

I believe that society in general is also responsible for those senseless murders. Someone yesterday stated on television that 40 percent of gun sales is strictly controlled.

This means that 60 percent of gun sales in our country are done without proper supervision. Is this the best we can do to insure the safety of our population?

The gun lobby's argument is that the availability of guns tends to increase the safety of our population. If this were true, then our country should have the lowest crime in the world, since we tend to have the highest number of guns per capita.

All those things will be important to look at Nic.

My point is that right now and over the next few days, IMO, it is more important to focus on the needs of the families that lost loved ones and do anything possible to help them, show them love and support.

There is nothing yet to indicate any of this is true. This was not a mother that only his mother, who didn't have the emotional or financial ability to have him treated by a trained facility for his handicap, whatever it was. She lived in a upper scale neighborhood which would be tough for a substitute teacher to afford.

In most cases you cannot force treatment in a well trained facility. The family dynamics are unknown. The father having a high paying job is irrelevant. No one has any idea yet of the specific mental health issues the shooter had. Nor does it indicate the parents were neglectful or refused to try to help him.

If there were obvious problems it is hard to understand the number of guns purchased legally and easy access to someone with mental health issues.

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

"Adam Lanza and his mother, Nancy, lived in a well-to-do part of Newtown, a prosperous community of 27,000 people about 60 miles northeast of New York City.

Lanza's parents filed for divorce in 2008, according to court records. His father, Peter Lanza, lives in Stamford, Conn., according to public records, and he reportedly works as a tax director for General Electric.

Lanza's aunt Marsha Lanza, of Crystal Lake, Ill., said her nephew was raised by kind, nurturing parents who would not have hesitated to seek mental help for him if he needed it.

If her son had needed counselling, "Nancy wasn't one to deny reality," she said Friday. Marsha Lanza said her husband had seen Adam as recently as June and recalled nothing out of the ordinary."

You might have misunderstood what I attempted to say. The murderer is guilty--no question; but society is not blameless! Children do not grow up in a vacuum. They do build up their values by choosing from what society holds dear.

Now, what kind of problems have I had in life? Funny, can't remember a single one.

I can relate to what those parents are going through. I lost my 20-year-old daughter 17 years ago who died in a car accident, and I lost my 51-year-son to an unexpected massive stroke.

Loosing two children is very painful, but loosing a child due to the action of a deranged young man is probably much more traumatic. All we can do is pray for those who lost those precious young ones.

I have volunteered at a small Christian high school (300 students) for the past 6 years. For each of these 6 years I have seen students who are outcasts from the majority of their peers. They sit alone at lunchtime (sometimes 2 or 3 together, but still alone), they do not talk with one another or with other students, they do not engage in extracurricular activities, they hold their heads low and do not make direct eye contact with others. These are the students who bring their own lunch, finish first and go directly to their classrooms when the bell rings.

I am only involved in 15 minutes of their lives, on an every-other Thursday schedule during the school year. I've tried to get other students to sit with them, to engage in conversation with them and get them involved in school activities--but to no avail. Most of the time the students I ask to help refuse to even try, but the few who have tried (my two children and a couple of their friends) tell me that those "loner" students just don't feel comfortable enough to engage in peer relations.

If you were able to see these students, you would see that their behavior is the result of years of social conditioning. Every classroom has them, every grade, every school. To say that society has no responsibility for these sorts of tragedies is to turn a blind eye from our everyday interactions with our fellow human beings.

The shooter is accountable for this tragedy. God will judge his soul.

But there are those who need to wake up and see that there are young people everywhere who are hurting emotionally. People who feel as if society has abandoned them. People who feel as if God abandoned them. Without help, these people may consider acting out in violence in a scene similar to this.

As a society, we have started the anti-bullying campaign and that is making strides everywhere. However, stopping the bullying can only go so far. We need to be the good Samaritan and get those young people help. We need to be the ones who actually help.

Different people respond to video games and to what is portrayed on television in diverse ways. There has been documented cases where murderers have acknowledged the influence of what they had seen on television.

Would you dismiss the connection between the mass killer in a theatre with the film being portrayed at said event?
