Tomatoes - fruit or vegetable

Recommended Posts

Thought since the whole time I have been here all the arguements, debates and fights have basically been about womens ordination, homosexuality and guns, it would be nice to have a new topic to go for the throat about.

So here we have it.

Tomatoes. Are these delicious sandwich and salad ingredients a fruit or a vegetable?

Oh - no sources of your answer required.

I thought they were poisonous?

(Sorry, I thought I would stir the pot from the get go.)

Oh I sure hope not, I eat them every day.

If they grow on a bush instead of a vine, will that make them a vegie?

Or is ketchup a fruity sauce???

First, define "tomato." Without defining the term, I don't believe we can have a logical, productive discussion. Additionally, please specify, are we speaking "to-MAH-to" or "to-MAY-to?"

Technically they are a fruit.

Oh contrare! (just to be contrary, cause what is a argument thread without someone being contrary just for the sake of it bwink )

Oh indeed ketchup, which has been stirred in a pot like Liz brought up. I had some earlier, so I guess I don't just eat them raw. And pasta sauce as well............

Is a tomato even still a tomato once it is cooked or has it sacrificed itself?

My dad calls them "maters". :)

Oh and can vegetarian Christians eat Beefsteak tomatoes, if they aren't even supposed to have the "appearance of evil"?

I saw the title and had a feeling this was going to be trouble. I will be watching to see if this discussion degenerates.

Since this is a relatively short thread and easy to ketchup on, I must note that the US Supreme Court has definitively decided that tomatoes are BERRIES.

And during drought conditions, the skins contain a toxin and should be removed before eating the tomatoes whether in your sandwich or salsa.

But this information has come to me second hand. And though I believe it to be true and current, neither source will be available to collaborate the truthfulness of these facts until resurrection morning at which time both of these facts will no longer be true.

Let us consult an authority:

Quote:
http://www.whiteestate.org/books/mol/Chapt28.html#reference98

Mrs. White advised students to eat fruit and grains rather than vegetables for supper: “Let the students have the third meal prepared without vegetables, but with simple, wholesome food, such as fruit and bread.”97

The White family considered vegetables to include peas, beans, potatoes, turnips, parsnips, onions, cabbages, and squashes (although some of these would be classified as fruits botanically). Fruits included tomatoes, apples, pears, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, huckleberries, grapes, cranberries, and raisins. Grains (or seeds) included wheat, corn, rye, barley, oatmeal, rice, farina, cornstarch, “and the like.”98

Some have wondered about Ellen White’s inclusion of tomatoes within the fruit group, but that she did, according to common usage.99

Tomato=Fruit

Maybe so, but I'm not about to go adding it to my fruit salads! I will, however, add it to fruit cucumber in a Greek salad :)

Oh now you want to bring cucumbers into it. Start your own thread!!! HERESY!

So we have people saying it is a fruit yet no one ever eats it for desert, or as Gail says puts it in fruit salads.

So why is it a fruit?

tomato is technically a fruit, however the

U.S. Supreme Court in the Nix vs. Hedden decision in 1893 determined that the tomato was a vegetable and should be taxed as a vegetable.

these is one case i believe the supreme court made a deeply immoral decision, this is not right, this is just wrong. They avoided the scientific reality for the sake of some kind of taxation profit on vegetables, and fruit was not taxed.

nevertheless now i prefer cucumber salsa,

...and, uh... as shocking as it may seem, cucumbers and tomatoes are genuinely equally fruits therefore having tomato and cucumber salad is a fruit salad.

consequently tomato and cucumber sandwiches with toasted bread are a great kosher supper any time. especially if both are picked fresh from the garden with home-baked wholewheat bread.

cucumbers are a high nutrition vegetable which i was startled to discover this year, and alkalinzing to the blood stream, tomatoes on the other hand are an acidic vegetable and for this reason, are inferior to cucumbers for your health.

sorry for being off topic bit here.
