Sex Week is sponsored by the university’s Sexual Empowerment and Awareness at Tennessee club. The six-day event is expected to cost nearly $20,000 – covered in part by university grants, student fees and contributions from academic departments. University of Tennessee spokeswoman Karen Simpson confirmed to Fox News that the conference is being funded by student fees and university money. “The university is providing funding for this workshop because it covers a wide range of issues that are beneficial to our students,” Simpson said. There are 30 events planned including “Getting Laid,” “Sex Positivity; Queer as a Verb,” “Bow Chicka Bow Woah,” “How to Talk to Your Parents About Sex,” “Loud and Queer,” and “How Many Licks Does It Take…” – a workshop about oral sex. “It’s tackling important topics related to sexual health, sexual identity, preventing sexual assault, gender roles (and) religion,” she added. “The students have done a good job making sure there are things to appeal to all.” The nearly $20,000 cost was covered by money given from specific academic programs “who see a common interest – from law, from sociology and from history.” In addition to a campus-wide scavenger hunt for a golden condom, the university is hosting noted lesbian bondage expert and erotica author Sinclair Sexsmith. Sexsmith, who serves on the board of the New York Lesbian Sex Mafia, will deliver a lecture titled, “Messing Around with Gender.” Sexsmith runs the online website “Sugarbutch Chronicles: The Sex, Gender and Relationship Adventures of a Kinky Queer Butch Top.” In addition to hosting college workshops and lectures about queer theory, she is an expert in sexuality and leather. UT student Brianna Rader, one of the founders of Sex Week, told Fox News that Sexsmith will not be engaging in lesbian bondage demonstrations during her appearance. “She’s doing a workshop on poetry about sexuality,” Rader said. “She’s also going to be talking about constructing and reconstructing gender roles in society.” Sexsmith is also expected to show college students “how to turn up the heat on our own sex drive” – as well as play with gender and sexual identity roles and butch/femme roles. Rader said their event has something for everyone. Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. bonnie Posted March 15, 2013 Author Posted March 15, 2013 Do you see any evidence that university grants or mandatory student fees are being used to fund this week-long event? I don't think that was the claim. It sounds like "interested" parties donated the funds. Regardless if I were paying tuition to that University for a student it would stop. The student would either have to figure out a way to pay their own or go to a University that did not do this Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. I was curious to know if state and federal monies were part of this Sex Week event. I still believe that sex is a private affair and should remain so. Quote
olger Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 The Facebook page for Sex Week, directs people to their own website for "accurate information" about the event. http://sexweekut.org I reviewed the website this morning. The website attempts to appear objective by stating that the event "does not presume that everyone is having sex." They then state "The possibility of practicing a sex-positive form of abstinence will be explored." While we are left to imagine what a "sex-positive form of abstinence" might entail, it is certain that "abstinence" to them is not what it is to a biblical Christian. At a minimum, this is event is an endorsement of homosexuality: "Sex Week will include programming that includes and celebrates those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer. Every program we host will be in a safe space and friendly towards the LGBTQ community, including the fact that some of the speakers will be queer. In addition to queerness being explored as an identity category related to sexuality, the possible implications of using the word queer as a verb will be discussed." "Sex Week will include programming designed to educate members of the UTK community about topics related to kinkiness, the playful usage of sexual concepts in a manner different from conventional sexual behaviors. This includes BDSM (Bondage, Discipline/Dominance, Submission, Sadism, Masochism), a wide and creative variety of sexual acts, and borrowing your mom's copy of Fifty Shades of Grey." "Sex Week will include programming that is compelling, insightful, and relevant to people along the gender spectrum. In addition to having hospitality towards all genders, Sex Week will foster discussions about the theory and history behind gender roles in our culture and the expectations those create for interpersonal relationships and relationships with society. This will include discussion about prescriptive versions of masculinity and femininity and their healthier, more sustainable alternatives, as well as the limits put on individuals because of their gender role performance." Liberal one-ists have identified at least eight genders in Canadian classrooms, with a possibility of several more according to Michael Brown Ph.D. g (PS. The title of this thread is a bit more provocative than it could be). Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."

olger Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Recent statement by University of Tennessee third-year student (February 6). "I’m a feminist with a very liberal, sex-positive attitude, so for a long time I felt that being a virgin was somehow betraying my values: Your fore-mothers did not burn their bras and go to jail so you could fiddle with yourself on Saturday nights! GO YE FORTH AND HAVETH EMPOWERED SEX!!!” I have been saying for three years now, that there is a huge moral challenge coming down the pike in our world. It will challenge Christian believers to know where the Bible stands on these issues, and also challenge them to know where "they" stand as well. This movement is huge, folks, with many aspects to it. The legal pressures brought to bear on those who stay true to the Bible will be enormous. Watch for it, and stay anchored in the Word. M. T. Cross Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Here is my question. Is any of this mandatory for the young people at the university to participate in? Do the economics, political science, biology etc students have to take part in the activities? My other question is this. If they used the same funds to fund a Biblical Study and Revival week bringing in guest speakers how would you feel about it? Quote

Do the economics, political science, biology etc students have to take part in the activities? My other question is this. If they used the same funds to fund a Biblical Study and Revival week bringing in guest speakers how would you feel about it? It really isn't a question of forced participation. Maybe other parents think differently but I don't think lesbian bondage etc is a vital or necessary part of their education Not at a public university. If a group of students funded and held a bible study separate from the university and paid for it out of pocket no problem. Even as sick as I think lesbian bondage is,funded and held privately separate from the university their business. Neither being approved, promoted or funded by the university Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. M. T. Cross Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Thats fair Bonnie, and I agree. I don't think any public dollars should be spent on it. I can see the subject of human sexuality being brought up and studied in certain classes that it might relate to, but I think this crosses the line simply because for many people it is a sensitive and private matter. I ask about the Bible study thing for two reasons. One, obviously because this is a Christian site and I wanted to gauge the view point, and also because one of an experience my wife and I had with two separate public schools. One sent a Bible home with each of our older two kids. The other one enrolled our kids in Bible study classes. This was elementary school. I found both cases to be very offensive. What my children, what your children or what anyones children are taught about religion and spirituality are a personal family based matter. If one wanted their children to be taught religion in school they would send them to a religious school. Quote

Yes, I know what the original article said, Bonnie. That's why I quoted it back to you when you said that it wasn't a question. Anyway, I was asking because even the original article had errors in it. For example, the article quotes a person named "Simpson", when indeed her name is really "Simsen". I was looking to know if the people who are in charge of this event admit on their own page where the funding is coming from. Sorry I didn't spell it out word for word the firs time I asked. Next time, I will. Quote
M. T. Cross Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Where were these schools? In two separate towns in Alberta. I don't think thats where my tax dollars should be spent and I did object to the fact that our kids were enrolled in them without our consent. Just like I would object to kids under the legal age of adult being enrolled in a "Sex Week" course without my permission. This is why I asked if it was mandatory for anyone to attend this at UoT.
