Michelle Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 No, SARS is a specific respiratory syndrome that has been linked to eating civit (SP? civet?) cats in southern China. The H5N1 is the so-called "bird flu" that is running through Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam and has had flare-ups in China (HK) recently. However, as far as I know, there is no relationship between SARS and H5N1. That said, I am nowhere near being an expert on the subject! M Quote

Since I am vegetarian, I don't eat chicken meat (though we spent part of the summer on a farm surrounded by poultry--fortunately, the H5N1 doesn't seem to be in NE China yet!). I do bake with eggs, though, which does give me some pause. I'm not sure what the risk is of using eggs . . . Hong Kong flu, I don't know. H5N1 was here several years ago, as was SARS (after it jumped the border after PRC government tried to cover it up!). The flu that goes around the world every year originates in this area of the world. Speaking of which, I need to get my 6 y/o to get his flu shot, as recommended for asthmatic patients . . . . Researchers were able to determine that that flu was in fact a bird flu. Only this bird flu jumped right from the bird to humans without going through some other animal. Thus no one had immunity.
