CoAspen Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Why not a 'proper theology' court or a 'sin court' or....etc...etc. Shades of early Catholicism!! Thumbs down! Quote

Ted Oplinger Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Tribunals won't solve the marriage/divorce problem; instead, the problem will be driven underground, where the underlying issues will never be addressed maturely and uncondemningly. Tribunals quickly lead to inquisitions; inquisitions quickly devolve into instruments driving out all who will not tow the "pure standard line" of the issue involved. Fear, not love, reigns. Yes, the article makes several good points about marriage, but the idea of tribunals to address the divorce issue is quite counter-productive. To me, it is the same mental approach as was done with Prohibition on the temperance issue...and that worked wonderfully, didn't it? Blessings, Quote "As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17 "The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. Waggoner, The Glad Tidings "Courage is being scared to death - and saddling up anyway" - John Wayne "The person who pays an ounce of principle for a pound of popularity gets badly cheated" - Ronald Reagan
joeb Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I agree with Ted. We do NOT need a system of tribunals for determining fault. We need to follow the Biblical advice given to us. All problems between members of the church need to be handled locally without a formal structure and formal rules. What this article reminds me of is the way the Jews of Christ's day handled things. Without love. Without compassion. Without the people closest to the problem handling the problem with love and compassion. When a church thinks it needs a court system it is completely lacking the love of Christ, and because it is, it makes up rules and systems to keep it close to keeping a system of rules. Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted August 7, 2013 Administrators Posted August 7, 2013 It is just wrong in so many ways... How about we establish a Grace Tribunal and dispense grace instead. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

CoAspen Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 I see no one being 'indifferent', but just saying we do not need 'divorce courts' in the church. You might give us your thoughts on where having a 'court' on one issue would/wouldn't lead to other 'courts'. Quote
joeb Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 "Indifference to divorce is the scandal of the Christian conscience...it creates a significant credibility crisis when believers then rise to speak in defense of marriage." Eric Metaxas g How is disagreeing with the idea that we "need" a formal system of rules and regulations within the church in dealing with relational issues an indifference to divorce? I don't see that the early church set up a formal tribunal for dealing relationship issues, and it is our scriptural example for a functional church. Ellen White says the first two chapters of Colossians should be the pattern for our churches. I see nothing in those chapters about formal tribunals. CoAspen Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 In reading the referenced article I see an individual wanting a 'court' on the issue because the church is not, in their mind, keeping a good control of the issue, even useing the word 'purity'. I wonder if the article was not written with 'h---------ls' in mind. In other words we would have a formal 'court' that could deal with such issues. Talk about a really slippery slope into ancient Judaism with more 'tribunals/courts' and large rule lists!!!! Quote
M. T. Cross Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 What the article is proposing is an invasive manner of cult like control. It goes in the very face of free will. Quote

Windsor Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 There is way too much opposition to a court system for that to ever become a reality. Unfortunately there does not appear to be a middle ground so we are stuck on the other extreme with a church where members in open sin stand on the church platform. Until God removes the tares... Moderators Gerr Posted August 10, 2013 Moderators Posted August 10, 2013 I think I see some wisdom in having a church tribunal, but it should not be limited to divorce cases. Is it not a black eye on the church and Christ when members who can't settle their differences go to the courts? However, if the tribunal is for the purpose of punishing the guilty rather than being redemptive, then I see no merit in it. Such a tribunal would have probably been helpful for me when my wife & I lost $10k in a real estate transaction with a fellow church member. Quote

If someone won't repent when you talk to them, go to them with two or three others, and if they still won't repent take it to your entire local church. If they still won't repent. They lose their membership. This is a very powerful force for it exposes sin very publicly. Only the most hardened sinner will choose to not repent knowing what type of exposure is to come.
