joeb Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 We often think we're in the right when we are in the wrong. What if you are in fact wrong? Or in a grey area? That's why others are brought into the process. They will tell you if you're in the right or not. That's a part of their job as they will hear both sides of the issue and are neutral parties. CoAspen Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 I seem to remember a Church in the past that had 'tribunals', seems they burned some people at the stake. Even this country had some in the early days where they banned, dunked, and publicly humiliated people for supposed 'errors' of behavior and belief. Lets gather wood and build dunking ponds!!!!! That will turn them into 'correct' thinking SDA's...yes siree!! Quote

CoAspen Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 I don't remember ever suggesting that, do you? We were talking about 'tribunals' being run for 'correctness', not dirty laundry! Let me turn your question around, tell me which fine upstanding christians you want to decide if your beliefs meet their 'upstanding beliefs'? Quote
Moderators Gerr Posted August 11, 2013 Moderators Posted August 11, 2013 When you start looking into who is correct and who is in the wrong, it is inevitable that dirty laundry and closet bones are brought out in the open. Quote
CoAspen Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Correct, I am not following what you're questioning. Are suggesting church courts would be good? Are you suggesting DL and CB will be best opened in the church or legal court systems? Quote
Gordon1 Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Why not just follow the Biblical advice? If someone won't repent when you talk to them, go to them with two or three others, and if they still won't repent take it to your entire local church. Joe you have hit upon the root. Following Biblical advice is the only way to please God. Quote
Moderators Gerr Posted August 12, 2013 Moderators Posted August 12, 2013 What does Scripture say about taking suits between believers to unbelievers? Quote

It didn't work out very well. Quote

It didn't work out very well. Not sure I would trust new faces just because they belonged to a congregation. There are crooks and unbelievers everywhere. Other Biblical counsel would apply regarding lending, being unequally yoked, etc., before the passage in Matthew 18 was needed. Sorry you were swindled. Also happened to a brother I know, 30k to a conference officer. At a minimum, those things should be in writing unless one is ready to lose it without regret. God has a ledger. Court will soon be in session. Quote
Gordon1 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 What does Scripture say about taking suits between believers to unbelievers? It's a good question Gerry. Unbelievers might be the heathen man referred to in Matthew 18:17. Check the SOP for lawsuits too. Much depends upon our motive, as in all things of heavenly design. Quote

Following Biblical advice is the only way to please God. It's also the only thing that will work. It's only in following God's instructions that we find something that will work. Any other course is sure failure. Hasn't the history of the Isrealites taught us anything? There's a saying about what insanity is: repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Moderators Gerr Posted August 13, 2013 Moderators Posted August 13, 2013 It seems to me that a church tribunal is nothing more than a formalization of the Mt 18 principle. Quote
