Although we would not watch the "movie" we would watch the introduction and spots here and there with Kukla, Fran and Ollie and loved them, and loved Sherry Lewis and Lambchop as well! Right now as I am starting to develop "The Magic of liking this miserable world" (a ministry I am starting to teach Bible, health and mental health/resiliency skills using magic, puppets and hopefully be able to use some songs and games) I am realizing how there was something about say Mark Wilson, Harry Blackstone Jr. Sherry Lewis and Lambchop and Kukla, Fran and Ollie where a strong impact on my life and were in my quality world. Thank you for sharing!!! Quote
Administrators Gail Posted August 14, 2013 Author Administrators Posted August 14, 2013 Yes, I thought I remembered that they would introduce a kid's film then make periodic interruptions and comments throughout the show. That was a LONG time ago! But fondly remembered I was not raised in the church and had no restrictions on TV when I was a kid. I think that the kids' shows were a far cry in character from what they are these days. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Administrators Naomi Posted August 14, 2013 Administrators Posted August 14, 2013 I feel totally out of the loop when it comes to kids shows and movies from the 50ties & 60ties ... not allowed. I do find it interesting to read about the memories of those who did have the advantage of knowing that portion of our world's history. Ted Oplinger Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Goodness, that was a lifetime away for me with those two shows...they were quite entertaining, though! joeb Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I feel totally out of the loop when it comes to kids shows and movies from the 50ties & 60ties ... not allowed. I do find it interesting to read about the memories of those who did have the advantage of knowing that portion of our world's history. I only watched TV very occasionally during those decades. There were multiple reasons for it, but it was primarily because my parents didn't want a TV in the house. But one of the other reasons was that we lived, most of the time, a long ways beyond the reach of TV stations. I don't look at this as me being deprived of anything. Partly due to the fact that we didn't have a TV I learned to love to read. That has had a profound influence on my life for the better. If not for my love of reading I very much doubt I'd be a Christian today, and there's a good possibility that I wouldn't even be alive today. I look at my grandkids and those kids will never learn to love to read because they are addicted to watching TV and video games. Those two things are NOT influences for good in their lives. I see that as them being deprived of learning to love to read, and the learning that always comes with reading. I think that the kids' shows were a far cry in character from what they are these days. Much like you, my experience as a child was not restricted except there was little of TV to exclude where I grew up. In later years, especially as radio and TV "matured", by the time that happened we already had the influence of the church to remind us of the dangers re: the molding of our children's minds in their most formative years. I recall sit-coms like "All in the Family" that was a strong precursor to what our younger generation is today. I'm of the opinion it isn't going to change for the better until Divine intervention prevails. "Sensible people keep their eyes glued on wisdom, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth." Naomi, my daughter would tell you that she completely understands! She is still a little aggravated that there were some shows I wouldn't allow her to watch. Shows that would have helped her to have had a better relationship with her peers in her earlier years. (Even now there are references to shows she never watched that her peers still talk about, and she feels left out.) Quote

Those two things are NOT influences for good in their lives. I see that as them being deprived of learning to love to read, and the learning that always comes with reading. There is some good that can come both from television viewing and from playing video games. I agree that reading is extremely important, but would have to argue that even some reading can be not a good influence; and too much reading can be a definite hindrance to leading a good life. Quote

Hair Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Hmmm, Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Rogers, and Scooby Doo is as far back as I go. Mr. Rogers??... maybe that's what ruined me. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood won't you be my neighbor du da du da I remember Mr Rogers showed me how to make a motor boat out of a milk carton and rubber band... mom didn't have to beg me to get in the bath tub that day! I never cared much for Mr. Rogers himself, but the train was cool!... Mr Green Jeans and the Captain, Shaggy and the Mystery Machine... Gilligan's Island, The Munsters, The Adam's Family, Tom and Jerry, Road Runner, Buggs Bunny!... everyday after school with a glass of milk and some Little Debbies! Oh Man! those were the days!... I turned out just fine:) Never liked Sesame Street, I never could relate for some reason... the grouchy puppet in the trash can was cool though...reminded, and still reminds me of my dad LOL Can you imagine what the Tasmanian Devil would do to Sponge Bob?!?!?! I agree that reading is extremely important, but would have to argue that even some reading can be not a good influence; and too much reading can be a definite hindrance to leading a good life. Any good that can come from watching TV is far outweighed by the evil that comes from it. The same goes for video games. They simply do not teach good life lessons. They teach violence and they tend to inure the heavy video game player to violence for the vast majority of video games glorify violence. Also, when a person watches TV their brain shuts down. That's been proven over and over again. That does not happen when a person reads. The way I see your argument against reading it can be used against food too. Should we argue against food because too much of it is a hindrance to leading a good life? Quote Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.Alexis de Tocqueville

People can watch too much television, but there is some good that can come from some television and it is foolish to say it is entirely bad. Additionally, I have an argument against too much time being spent on video games; also, I have an argument against violence in video games. However, not all video games are violent and some do, indeed, teach good life lessons. We cannot say that all of television is "bad", or all video games are "bad" or that even all reading is "bad". Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted August 15, 2013 Members Posted August 15, 2013 I watched television from the time I can first remember. My intellect did not suffer because of it. I was also a voracious reader of books. You don't need to disavow one activity in favor of the other. You certainly can do both. And as far as the brain "shutting down" while watching television, yes - parts of it do get "numbed" .... but the same thing happens during sex, while exercising, when you eat, when you sleep... Hair Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 VIDEO GAMES DO LEAD TO VIOLENCE!! I have first-hand experience: When I was a kid, mom sent me to the store for some bread. Once at the store, I started playing PacMan and forgot all about the bread. After much time had passed, while I was still playing, I felt some one tugging on my shoulder. It was messing-up my concentration. Parts of my brain must have been turned off. Without looking, assuming it was one of my buddies, I smacked the hand away and said, "GET OFF ME MAN!" The hand came back quickly and gripped very tightly and snatched me away from the game!! It was the hand of MOM! She got VERY violent with a belt right there in the store in front of all my friends! Oh, the horror!!...messed-up my high score and she didn't get any bread either! Sometimes we talk about that day now and laugh Oh... and nobody said anything about any child abuse... they were all too scared... it was so bad that my buddies did not even crack a smile, much less laugh, until AFTER she left dragging me down the sidewalk with her...yeah, now, imagine having to show your face back in that store again I did, because in 1981 it was the ONLY PacMan in town.
