We shall see what will happen next. The water level is down. Some blocked streets are open. Others are still blocked. I just came in from driving around a bit. In some cases while the water was off of the street, I was feet away from running water. I am uncertain as to whether or not I could get out to the Interstate if I were to try. I know that some routes in and out of town are still blocked. I just do not know if one is open. And, I do not know if the Interstate is open if I were able to get to it. Quote Gregory

They have been back on their property. It is swept clean and the river is running where their home was. Property of theirs has been located down stream. Their septic tank is sitting in what used to be the bedroom of a home down stream! Imagine that. Just think about it for a minute. That home had a swimming pool. It is filled with mud. That home has mud 4 feet deep in some rooms that show signs that the water level in that home reached 7 feet in some rooms. It is believed that there is property of theirs buried in the 4 feet of mud in those rooms. The owner of that property (not the SDA family) had a motel business located on the property. Total value of everything about 2 million. It is all gone except for a skeleton of the home that has rooms full of mud--4 feet in the kitchen. And less than $200 thousand dollars of insurance coverage due to the desire of the owner to cut costs. NOTE: This was not the SDA couple. NOTE: The Federal Government has announced that in the entire State of Colorado, only 22,000 people have flood coverage. Fortunately the SDA couple had flood coverage but as they did not have a lot their payment is expected to be minimal. Quote Gregory

Not very affordable by any means. Not affordable: There is only one source in the US for flood insurance--the Federal government. The price depends upon the assumed potential to flood. I recently renewed my flood insurance. I have 250K on the house and 100K on contents, which is the max. My cost for the next year was $458. That is $1.25 per day. Frankly, I think such is affordable. When my father died, she lost her SS check and now just receives what he was getting in SS. She also lost what my father was getting from his pension, which was a good amount, lost the money he was getting from Germany for being in a concentration camp for 5 years. So all the money she gets is now, is one check from SS and that's it. I was sending her money every month for a number of years until I lost my job and my wife became disabled and can not work any longer. She was getting disability for 2 years and than that was taken away, but now that we'ved moved back to Mass, and are Foster Parents to our grandchildren, the state gives us an allowance to help raise them, I can now start sending my Mom money again. But even with this, she can barely stay even. If she were to sell her house, she couldn't even afford a one bedroom apartment. Her mortgage is less than any apartment we have been able to find. I also know quite a few other people that cannot afford to pay this extra insurance. And all of them are elderly. Again I say, very sad. I hope that Joe, CoA and Gregory all make it out of this ok. I also send my prayers out to the Non-SDA's that are suffering losses from this disaster as well, cause ya know - they matter too. Quote

At least that can be repaired and they did not lose everything. There are homes within walking distance from where I live that got 7 feet of water and mud in them! As I was told yesterday: "When we purchased our home we knew that we had a chance of a one in one-hundred year flood. We just did not think it would come in our life-time." From a person who was living in Boulder. For our city it was a one in five-hundred year flood, not because of the rain that it got, but because of the collected water from the mountains that all came through the river that divides our city. Still had to pay for all utilities, etc. We tried to see if she could get state aid, but as far as Florida is concerned she makes to much!!! What a joke!! If she lived in Mass, I believe she might be able to get section 8 housing and/or DTA assistants, where she might be able to only pay around $50 dollars or so, not positive, but again, she's not interested in moving into the cold. He talked it over with his children,one was against it. He went ahead anyway. He has the cash to stay in his home and can afford the extras he could not previously. He said the process is quite simple and if you own your home there generally isn't any hold up.Even if there is still a mortgage on the home and there is equity they pay off the existing mortgage and the owner draws on the equity.
