Republican candidate Carson says Muslims unfit to be U.S. president

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said on Sunday that Muslims were unfit to be president of the United States, arguing their faith was inconsistent with American principles.

"I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that," Carson told NBC's "Meet the Press."

The remarks by Carson, who is near the top of opinion polls for the crowded field of Republican candidates, followed a controversy that erupted when front-runner Donald Trump declined to challenge anti-Muslim comments made by a supporter on Friday.

Carson, a Christian who says he got the idea for his tax proposals from the Bible, said he thought a U.S. president's faith should be "consistent with the Constitution."

Asked if he thought Islam met this bar, the retired neurosurgeon said: "No, I do not."

America's largest Muslim civil rights group condemned Carson for his statement, which it said should disqualify him from the presidential contest because the U.S. Constitution forbids religious tests for holding public office.

"It's beyond the pale and he should withdraw," said Council on American-Islamic Relations spokesman Ibrahim Hooper.

Minnesota Democratic Representative Keith Ellison, the first practicing Muslim elected to Congress, said: "It’s unimaginable that the leading GOP presidential candidates are resorting to fear mongering to benefit their campaigns."Ellison added in his statement that "every American should be disturbed that these national figures are engaging in and tolerating blatant acts of religious bigotry."

CARSON THIRD IN POLL

Carson had been rising in polls, although he gave up some ground in a CNN/ORC poll released on Sunday, slipping to third place from second with 14 percent support. Sixteen Republicans are seeking the party's nomination for the presidential election in November 2016.

The CNN/ORC poll showed Trump, a real estate mogul, continued to lead the contest with the support of 24 percent of registered voters, down from 32 percent in a previous poll. (bit.ly/1OnmXrB)

Former Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive Officer Carly Fiorina surged into second place with 15 percent support, just above Carson.

Carson's comments drew scorn from Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, another presidential candidate, although one who garnered under 1 percent support in the CNN/ORC poll.

"I think Dr. Carson needs to apologize," Graham said, adding the comments were particularly offensive to U.S. soldiers who are Muslim.

But other Republicans tread more softly around the issue, highlighting its salience among some voters. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, who had 4 percent support in the CNN/ORC poll, told CBS' "Face the Nation" that a president's religion should not matter but he understood the rise of anti-Islamic sentiment because "we were attacked by people who were all Muslim."

A Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll conducted in January in Iowa, the first state to vote in the nominating contest, showed 39 percent of Republicans saw Islam as inherently violent. Thirteen percent of Democrats held that view.

Trump, asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday if he would accept a Muslim president, replied: "Some people have said it already happened."

And people say they like Carson because he's a Strict Constitutionalist. Guess he missed this bit of Article VI:

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

Show me where laws are being passed to this effect.   On the other hand, Muslims are instructed to work towards installing Islamic government, and guess what Sharia says about infidels in public office. So how do you rectify that paradox?

But making anyone's faith a test for office... is inconsistent with the constitution!

In any sane logic, Carson just disqualified himself.

There is to be no religious test to be president, but there will always be an unofficial one to be voted in.  Such as, if a persons religion taught that  there are to be classes of people, and that white is to be the upper class, and blacks should not be in the same home or building, or that cats need to be sacrificed at every meal, or if their faith taught that aboriginals should not be educated and they should be able to be bought and sold, then they are just not going to be voted in.    What Carson said was "is inconsistent with our constitution.."

Ben Carson Shattering Stereotype About Brain Surgeons Being Smart

http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/ben-carson-shattering-stereotype-about-brain-surgeons-being-smart

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Brain surgeons, long burdened with the onerous reputation of being among the smartest people in the world, are expressing relief that the Republican Presidential candidate Ben Carson is shattering that stereotype once and for all.

In interviews with brain surgeons across the country, the doctors revealed the enormous pressure they felt to live up to their profession’s inflated renown for intelligence before Carson entered the race.

“When people found out I was a brain surgeon they would always assume I was some kind of a genius,” said Harland Dorrinson, a neurosurgeon in Toledo, Ohio. “Now they are beginning to understand that you can know a lot about brain surgery and virtually nothing about anything else.”

Dorrinson said that acquaintances used to view him as a source of wisdom on a wide range of subjects, but added, “Ever since Ben Carson said that prisons make people gay, that’s really fallen off.”

The brain surgeon said that he would probably contribute to Carson’s campaign to keep him in the race: “every time he says something, it helps bring people’s unrealistic expectations about brain surgeons back down to earth.”

He said that he was cheered by Carson’s pronouncement over the weekend that Muslims should not be President. “Now you can cross politics off the list of things that people will expect me to be knowledgeable about,” he said. “I think I speak for a lot of brain surgeons when I say, ‘Thank you, Ben Carson.’ ”

Ben Carson doubles down on no Muslims in the White House

Republican Presidential hopeful, Dr. Ben Carson tells The Hill that presidents shouldn’t be sworn in on a Koran.

In an interview with The Hill, Carson opened up about why he believes a Muslim would be unfit to serve as commander in chief.

“I do not believe Sharia is consistent with the Constitution of this country,” Carson said, referencing the Islamic law derived from the Koran and traditions of Islam. “Muslims feel that their religion is very much a part of your public life and what you do as a public official, and that’s inconsistent with our principles and our Constitution.”

Carson said that the only exception he’d make would be if the Muslim running for office “publicly rejected all the tenants of Sharia and lived a life consistent with that.”

“Then I wouldn’t have any problem,” he said.

However, on several occasions Carson mentioned “Taqiyya,” a practice in the Shia Islam denomination in which a Muslim can mislead nonbelievers about the nature of their faith to avoid religious persecution.

“Taqiyya is a component of Shia that allows, and even encourages you to lie to achieve your goals,” Carson said.

The test with religious liberty questions is that it must apply to every religion. Christianity cannot demand special rights over any other religion. SDAs cannot demand special rights over any other denomination. No religion can demand special rights over any other religion. If any religion is excepted, either positively or negatively, it is no longer religious liberty. "With liberty and justice for all".

Carson was clearly implying that Muslims, in general, are not fit to be president of the United States. This is the kind of thing that the base of his party likes to hear. It is ironic that an SDA would make these comments considering our stance on religious liberty. I have already had the feeling that for many, religious liberty is really about the Christian American majority maintaining its freedom rather than freedom for all. Carson will garner support for this xenophobia but alongside Trump will succeed in marginalizing conservatives IMHO.

Ben said that HE could not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of the nation.  He did not say that Muslims should be barred from running for president.  I'm OK with what he said - at least he was being honest.  I could not advocate putting any of the current  Democrat candidates in charge of this nation, either.  It doesn't mean I abhor all Democrats.

Islam is not just a religion in the sense that most westerners treat their Christianity.  It is an entire way of life that encompasses religion, politics, civil and criminal laws, diet, economics, etc.  Plus, if practiced as taught in some parts of the Koran, includes killing or enslavement of those who do not adhere to sharia law.

Ben Carson also says that he would not support a Christian president who wanted to establish a theocracy.  I agree with that statement as well.  He seems pretty balanced to me.

On this we agree, totally. However, I do wonder what BC is really thinking. He is new to the political world and I would bet he is still learning to think things through well in advance before responding. What can be used against you, in or out of context, will take place. The media, during the silly season, especially, is not about accuracy, but sounds bites and controversy.

I will have to wait and see, because his remarks are troubling , on other fronts as well.

There are Muslims who are very secular and some who are very religious like Jews, Christians etc. To speak this way about all Muslims is ignorant and fuels xenophobia.

For many Muslims their religion does not encompass everything. They often live and work in communities that are very different from their faith. They know how to adapt and accommodate. It seems to me that conservative Christians are the ones who want to impose their beliefs and practice on every aspect of life. I heard a commercial on the radio for Biblical health care. Cultural conservatism is a mutant form of Christianity that simply serves the interests of conservative Christians who want their values to encompass all aspects of life.

Much fear and misunderstanding is at the root of a lot of this. Humans fear what they don't understand, that's normal. But if given the opportunity to learn and understand, we should not continue with our preconceived ideas.  The statement "  It is an entire way of life that encompasses religion, politics, civil and criminal laws, diet, economics, etc. ",could be said about other orthodox religions also and is even used in Christianity as a goal. So that idea is not something to be used in a negative way.

To deny that we are not afraid of Islam, would be false. All we ;hear about is the most extreme and radical aspects of it. As has been mentioned before, Read the OT with out the normal 'contexting' that we do and you have a God that is just as scary.

Couldn't edit the above...

Sure; Muslim devotion runs the spectrum just like Christian devotion.  However, devout Muslims are way scarier than devout Christians.  I have yet to read about large groups of "jihadist" Christians beheading and immolating Muslims who won't convert, or forcing them into sexual slavery.  One cannot say that persecution of Christians by Muslims is only occuring in isolated rare occasions.  Try telling that to any Christians in Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and any other Middle Eastern or Indonesian country.  Who's to say it won't come to Western Europe next; or the U.S?

That is much more an issue of wealth and development and history than of religion: Christianity got all that out of its system during the Crusades, at least at that low-tech level. Bombings from billion dollar jets and drone strikes are done by those who are Christian though, even if not ostensibly in the name of their religion.

I say this, not to disparage Christianity at all, but to suggest that the violence of radical Islam is human and political much more than it is religious.

The crusades of defensive conflicts - NOT offensive.

IF the "church" had not inspired the Crusades, Western Europe would have been conquered by ISLAM, and I might be wearing a burka today...  The Muslims had already conquered Spain, and were knocking at the door of France.   ISLAM does teach expansion and forced conversion - by the sword.  True Christianity DOES NOT.

If I may suggest a book:  "The Politically Incorrect Guide to ISLAM and The Crusades" by Robert Spencer.
