bonnie Posted October 8, 2015 Author Posted October 8, 2015 Interesting that your mind leaps to compulsion when I said and meant nothing of the sort. My intention was to inform people so they Actually that isn't quite what you said. Many feel the same about the gospel of the news for you and others,Huffington Post,Salon and Media Matters.I don't think I have read here that you should avoid reading those at all costs. Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this. Quotes by Susan Gottesman
Moderators Bravus Posted October 9, 2015 Moderators Posted October 9, 2015 (edited) I do avoid citing the HuffPost at all costs. I cite Salon while usually noting that I'm doing so and that I know it's a site with a particular perspective. Pretty sure I've never cited Media Matters. I'm much more likely to cite Google Scholar or a paper in an academic journal, or The Economist, The Guardian or The Sydney Morning Herald.I'm completely happy for people to make their own judgements about any source I use. Just as I made the judgement that "The Daily Mail should be avoided at all costs" ... a comment that included the hidden assumption "if you care at all about whether or not something is true". That paper publishes what is interesting, not what is true. Other sources, of course, do the same, but that one is particularly prone to publishing stories that turn out, on the quickest and shallowest investigation, to be wholly false.By all means continue to use it as a source, if you're comfortable with that. JoeMo Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 - who has the "facts"? The U.S. - based news services are reporting different things than the independent and foreign-based news. Fox and CNN even report different viewpoints. Whose "facts" are we gonna believe? In this day and age, "facts" seem to by a matter of personal preference. To many, it is a "fact" that Obama is a Muslim; to others it is not a fact. To many, it is a "fact "that the U.S must exploit its new-found energy wealth to save the country and the world; to others, it is a "fact" that doing so will so aggrevate climate change to the point that we will be doomed. To many, Jesus being the author and finisher of our faith is a "fact"; to others, its mythology. Which "facts" do you accept? Quote
