Some people have no idea what our message is and how God intends for it to be used...kind of like standing at the bedside of a dying cancer patient, and preaching about "the mark of the beast" when what they need is to hear of God's love. There will always be those who make a negative view more prominent during times like this, and God does not lead in any such efforts. This disaster we have in Alberta is not a stage or soapbox for everyone who wishes to draw attention to something that does not apply. Everyone involved in fighting the fire are risking their lives, and doing a great job, showing compassion and banding together for the common cause at hand. If anything, this is what God calls us to in disasters like this. He calls us to open our hearts, and where possible our wallets, and to avoid the fanatical views of "judgment."  Making this terrible fire a whipping post to project a pet theory is useless.

Different individuals a called to different tasks.

31On that day, let no one on the housetop come down to retrieve his possessions. Likewise, let no one in the field return for anything he has left behind. 32Remember Lot’s wife! 33Whoever tries to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it.… Luke 17

The worst in times, brings out the best in people.

Indeed it does...  That is the glimmer of God's presence despite the horrible things that may happen.  The hands and feet of Jesus to bring aid and help where it is needed.  God isn't in the whirlwind, the fire, the earthquake... but in the still small voice of hope, comfort, encouragement, the helping hand, the selfless risking of ones own life to rescue and help those in peril.

Such are the times that can reveal the true character of people... and sadly as we can also see it reveals bad characters too...

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

If you have Christ then you can do things unselfishly.  If you do not, then everything you do is based on selfishness even though it appears otherwise.  Again, that's why Christ states without Me you can do nothing.

Pastor Venden touches on this.  See time frame 7:40 to 10:12 minutes

That's kind of a shallow, crass judgment.  It sounds like you're saying any non Christian who helps others is doing so out of selfishness.  I totally disagree.  I know some pretty selfless non-Christians.  I'll bet some of the volunteer firefighters are non-Christian.  God's love can motivate people even if they don't know (or believe) it is God that is moving them.

I'm not judging because I do not know who's who.  I appreciate these firefighters very much.  Even Paul said give honor to whom honor is due (see Rom 13:7), but fighters need Christ too.  Let's not confuse men's so called good deeds with God's righteousness.  The two aren't comparable because God's righteousness is based on agape and men's on self-love.

You see Christ didn't come save 50% sinners, or 25% sinners, but 100% sinners. That's why Christ said,  “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

Christ didn't come to save those who think they have righteousness of their own, but sinners bankrupt of all righteousness.  If men can produce agape love without Christ then why should men need Christ's righteousness (both imputed and imparted)?

I have little confidence in the Canadian firefighters.  For them it is a job, a duty, and a chore.

I have met friends in other public defenders organizations , and it seems to me, just as a physician or other medical individual might mentally disassociate from the task at hand rather than sink into emotional incapacity, could purposefully develop a hard exterior, in order meet the daily necessary requirements while saving lives.

"Nearly 90 per cent of Fort McMurray still intact; 2,400 structures lost"

Incredible job of fire fighters.  Some went with under 1 hour sleep in the first 48 hours, until relief came.

Doesn't look like any more rain coming; temperatures are going back up.  Hopefully fire threat is down in Ft. Mac.  2,400 structures destroyed; 25,000 saved.

With how the media sometimes over states, I was expecting more..

The Town has 60,000 people plus a few non registered people   :)  I was expecting that number to go over 100,000  and only hear it go as high as 90,000..

There were some first nation reserves evacuated as well.

Many of the front line workers with the First Nation people,  (aka American Indians or natives or something like that)

A lot of HEROS

If you have enough motivation, you run on adrenalin.  I remember going about 36 hours on just a few five-minute dozes, definitely under an hour of sleep, near the end of which I was still spot on with aiming shovel-fulls of soil up at about 4+ meters high into the trees to stop the fire burning up the trunk.  I later could not believe I would have been so capable.  Adrenalin can accomplish a fair bit.  The average "professional," though, does not, and probably cannot, run on adrenalin, simply because it is not meant for long-term activity.  But for a little "help your friend" incentive illustrated in the below news excerpt, the adrenalin may certainly have kicked in.

LAC LA BICHE, Alta. — Emily Ryan died in a car crash while fleeing wildfires in northern Alberta, but firefighters were determined not to let memories of her disappear.

The 15-year-old was the daughter of a deputy fire chief in Saprae Creek east of Fort McMurray. After her death, when flames threatened her family home, crews spent the night dousing the exterior with water.

“That was a huge sacrifice on their behalf, because some of them lost their homes while they were making sure that we didn’t lose ours,” said Emily’s sister Chelsi Ryan, her voice shaking.

I suppose the wind might be a factor on whether garden hoses could save a house. It is worth a try if one's life is not in danger. Fires can be picky, too, leaving some homes intact while others in the neighborhood burn to the ground. If there's a wind-driven firestorm, I would get my family to safety as a priority and hope that the contents of the fireproof safe would survive.

If you're surrounded by frosty spring lawns, sidewalks, and streets, where is the "wall of fire" that will "cremate" you alive as if you were in the line of a blow torch?  If your house is surrounded by trees, different story.  As I understand in looking at pictures of the city, most homes had a defensible space around them.  I would certainly have put up a defense of my own home, to include hosing down the roof to prevent embers from catching.  It's hard for them to do much if the roof is soaked and cool.  The bigger danger would be if you had a cord of firewood stacked against your wall.

Of course, some will continue to believe that only firefighters should fight fire.

As a child, I was thrust out in the snow in the middle of the night when our home caught fire.  The firefighters came.  They aimed their hoses onto the roof.  But it was my father who got up on the roof, unnoticed by the firemen, and axed a hole through which to aim a hose and get at the actual flames in the attic space.  That stopped the fire.
