Although it has undergone various name changes and hosts over the years, “The Tonight Show” has been aired continuously for the past 54 years. The host from July 1957 through March 1962, Jack Paar walked off during the stage on February 11, 1960, after one of his show segments was removed by network censors. Hugh Downs, his announcer, was left on his own to finish the show. Paar returned about one month later.

Johnny Carson worked as the host of “The Tonight Show” for 30 years, which holds the record for longevity. Some of the popular skits performed by Carson included Carnac the Magnificent, Aunt Blabby and his impressions of Ronald Reagan. Jay Leno has the second-longest tenure so far and hosted the show on two different occasions from 1992 to 2009 and again from 2010 to 2014 with Conan O’Brien serving as host in between.

What Early Television Show Was Used as the Format for “The Tonight Show?”

“The Steve Allen Show,” which was originally called the “Knickerbocker Beer Show” for the sponsor, made use of Allen’s ad libbing, improvisation and connection with the audience and guests. In 1954, he converted the show into “The Tonight Show” with Gene Rayburn, future host of the “Match Game,” as the show’s announcer. This early version of the show featured the original opening monologue, interviews with people on the streets and audience participation.

Which Future Stars Got Their Big Break by Appearing on the Show?

Over the years, many new talents have been discovered on “The Tonight Show.” Steve Allen used his street interviews to launch the careers of such comics as Louis Nye, Don Knotts, Bill Dana and Tom Poston. While Johnny Carson headed the program, viewers were treated to Joan Rivers, Jay Leno, Roseanne Barr, Ellen DeGeneres and Eddie Murphy, along with many others. During the days of Jack Paar, probably the most memorable comedian introduced to the public was the iconic George Carlin.

STEVE ALLEN

Answer: Steve Allen started hosting "The Tonight Show" on this day in 1954, when he was only 32 years old! He is the youngest host in the show's 61 year history. Jack Paar, the show's next permanent host, took over in 1957 at the age of 39 — the same age that Jimmy Fallon was when he became the host in 2014. Johnny Carson, the longest-serving host, got the job in 1962 at the age of 36. He handed off three decades later to Jay Leno, then 42. The oldest person to take the job is a shocker: At 46, Conan O'Brien was older than any other full-time host when they first got the job. (Jay Leno was older, when he took it back from Conan.)

AUDI

Answer: The Audi emblem with its four rings identifies one of Germany’s oldest established automobile manufacturers. The four rings of the Audi logo each represent one of four car companies that banded together to create Audi's predecessor company, Auto Union. Audi's slogan is Vorsprung durch Technik, meaning "Advancement through Technology". However, Audi USA had used the slogan "Truth in Engineering" from 2007 to 2016, and have not used the slogan since 2016. Audi, along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, is among the best-selling luxury automobile brands in the world.

OPOSSUM

Answer: Marsupials are the group of mammals that have a pouch. The only naturally occurring marsupial in the United States is the opossum. Other marsupials you may be familiar with are koalas and kangaroos. The opossum is a solitary and nocturnal animal about the size of a domestic cat. Opossums, like most marsupials, have unusually short lifespans for their size and metabolic rate. Even in captivity, opossums live only about four years. Like raccoons, opossums can be found in urban environments, where they eat pet food, rotten fruit, and human garbage.

INDIANA

Answer: The Crossroads of America is the official motto of the U.S. state of Indiana. The Indiana General Assembly passed a resolution in 1937 establishing the phrase as the state's official motto. Some historians say this is due to Indianapolis being the hub of several major interstate highways that criss-cross Indiana and connect Hoosiers to the rest of the U.S. Others say Highways 40 and 41 opened the West for settlement and were designated as part of the original federal highway system in 1926. The intersection of these two highways in Terre Haute became the Crossroads of America.

PRINGLES

Answer: Pringles is advertised with the slogan "Once you pop, you can't stop". Pringles, as a product brand, is especially known for its packaging, a tubular paperboard can with a foil-lined interior and a resealable plastic lid, which was invented by Fredric J. Baur. Baur was an organic chemist and food storage technician who specialized in research and development and quality control P&G. Baur's children honored his request to bury him in one of the cans by placing part of his cremated remains in a Pringles container in his grave.

HUDSON

Answer: The term “up the river” as most people know refers to going to prison. If you ever watch any gangster films from the 1930’s or 40’s, one of the lines of dialogue that always pops up is: “up the river.” So where did the saying come from? The expression "up the river" to describe someone in prison or heading to prison derives from the practice of sentencing people convicted in New York City to serve their terms in Sing Sing. The prison is literally up the Hudson River from the city. The expression was eventually applied to anyone being sent to any prison. The expression dates back to the late 1800s.
