Richard Nixon Andrew Johnson Andrew Jackson Warren G Harding Answer: Andrew Johnson was impeached on February 24, 1868 in the U.S. House of Representatives on eleven articles of impeachment detailing his "high crimes and misdemeanors", in accordance with Article Two of the United States Constitution. The House vote made President Johnson the first president to be impeached in U.S. history. The trial ended on May 26 with Johnson’s opponents narrowly failing to achieve the two-thirds majority necessary to convict him. Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton are the only two presidents that have been impeached in United States history, and neither was convicted of the charges filed against him. Nixon most likely would have been impeached had he not resigned first. I was thinking Richard Nixon!! Impeachments aren't just for presidents. Other officials have been impeached too. The first was Senator William Blount of Tennessee for trying to help the British seize key territories from Spain. But it was Judge John Pickering of New Hampshire who had the honor of being the first official to not only be impeached but then also convicted. He was charged with drunkenness and unlawful rulings. Which is fair, because who wants to have a drunk judge presiding over their trial? 14 hours ago, phkrause said: Who is the Only President Other Than Bill Clinton to Be Impeached? Only two US presidents have been impeached: Clinton and Andrew Johnson. Andrew Johnson was impeached by a Republican congress that most people now agree was acting out of partisan politics to get rid of a president they felt had gone too soft on the south during the reunification process. Side note: impeachment does not mean you are kicked out of office. It means you go on trial before the Senate and it then takes a two-thirds vote to be removed. And Andrew Johnson survived that vote by exactly one senator. Republican Edmund Ross crossed party lines to keep the president in office, a move that earned him a nod in John F. Kennedy's book Profiles in Courage and plenty of praise from people over the years who framed his actions as valiant and selfless. So was Ross a man of great conviction guided by conscience? Probably not. It now seems likely that Ross was worried that the man slated to replace Andrew Johnson (Benjamin Wade) would take away Ross' ability to give cushy government jobs to his friends and family. The same friends and family he secured jobs for after the impeachment hearings, using his vote in Johnson's favor for leverage over the president. 14 hours ago, phkrause said: On What Charges Was Bill Clinton Impeached? If you think Bill Clinton was impeached for committing acts of infidelity, well that's not quite accurate. The problem was not so much that Clinton had an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky as that he lied about it afterwards. When he was impeached it was on charges of grand jury perjury and obstruction of justice. Again politicians broke party lines at the risk of keeping a political foe in office. 10 republicans voted against impeachment on the perjury charges (had they all voted in favor of the charges, Clinton would have narrowly dodged the two thirds vote by the skin of his teeth) and five against the obstruction of justice charge. 14 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was Richard Nixon Never Impeached? And we'll finish with the guy who should have been impeached but never was. To be clear, Richard Nixon was going to be impeached. The House Judiciary Committee issued articles of impeachment and charged him with a laundry list of crimes, but he decided to resign before it could happen. From a legal perspective, Nixon was never punished for his crimes as he was granted a full pardon by President Gerald Ford. Through his father, he is a nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola and of actress Talia Shire, and the cousin of directors Roman Coppola and Sofia Coppola. To avoid the appearance of nepotism as the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, he changed his name early in his career to Nicolas Cage, inspired in part by the Marvel Comics superhero Luke Cage. Answer: On June 1, 1869 Thomas Edison was granted his first patent for an electric voting machine. Unfortunately, Congress wanted no part of the device, so young Edison's vote-recorder was sent to the political graveyard. His next invention fared much better: an improved stock market tickertape machine, which earned him an instant $40,000 (about $700,000 today). He would continue to develop many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. But who would've thought the "Electric voting machine?????" Wow Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted December 21, 2016 Author Members Posted December 21, 2016 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What's One Thing Most of Our Elementary School Teachers Got Wrong About Edison and the Light Bulb? If this blog has taught us anything, it's that our elementary school teachers got a lot of stuff wrong. Columbus didn't discover America, educated people in the 1400s didn't think the world was flat, and now we add to that list the fact that Thomas Edison didn't discover the light bulb. As with most questions about who discovered or invented something, the answer is "we don't know" and "it depends on your definition of the item in question," or in the case on your definition of the term "light bulb." The British had developed light bulbs in the early-mid 1800s. The problem lay in the filament and in the composition of the air inside of the bulb. Everything they tried was either too expensive, not long lasting enough or used too much energy. Edison's big discovery was not creating a lightbulb, but rather creating one that could actually be used. He used a carbonized filament of cotton and then eventually one made out of bamboo that could last up to 1200 hours. Which sounds about five times as long as that annoying one we have in the entry way of our house that keeps going out every couple months. As energy.gov explains it, "Edison also made other improvements to the light bulb, including creating a better vacuum pump to fully remove the air from the bulb and developing the Edison screw (what is now the standard socket fittings for light bulbs)." 18 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did Flashlights Get Their Names? Well once you invent anything cool, one of the next questions becomes, "How do we make it portable?" In the 1890s, Conrad Hubert developed a handheld light. Back then, the technology for both the bulbs and batteries still had a way to go, and so his invention only provided a quick flash of light. Hence the name, flashlight. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did Automobiles Used to Use to Light the Way? Though light bulb technology was eventually incorporated into cars, in the early stages it was still impractical to be built into the automobile. So what were they gonna do? Light the way with fire? Well, actually, yes. That's exactly what they did. Cars lit their path with acetylene gas lamps which actually produced small flames to cast light. These lamps burned acetylene, which was resistant to wind and rain. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Two Major Events Led to the Spread of the Fluorescent Light? As time went on, people developed other forms of lighting, including the fluorescent light which would eventually prove far more efficient and long-lasting than the incandescent bulb. During World War II, the government suddenly needed energy efficient lights for their production plants and so turned to fluorescents. Then the 1973 oil crisis created a climate that left many Americans longing for more energy-efficient solutions in their homes and so fluorescent lights spread to residences as well. Thomas Edison didn't invent the light bulb, but he did turn it into something we can use in day-to-day life. And it's changed the course of history. Artificial lighting is one of the absolutely essential ingredients that have led us to where we are as a society today. It's queued all sorts off innovations that we today take for granted, perhaps most of all the fact that it allowed you to read this very article. His first patent application was executed while he was 21 years old. Edison's U.S. patents can be grouped into the general categories of electric power and light, phonographs and sound recording, telegraphy and telephony, batteries, mining and ore milling, miscellany, cement and motion pictures. It was not until June 17, 2003 that he was passed by Japanese inventor Shunpei Yamazaki. Yamazaki was subsequently passed by Australian inventor Kia Silverbrook who has been granted 4,665 U.S. utility patents as of March 2014. I read somewhere that it was closer to 2000!! Oh well!! "The Old Man and the Sea" "Moby-Dick" "Gulliver's Travels" "The Perfect Storm" Answer: The Pequod is a fictional 19th-century Nantucket whaling ship that appears in the 1851 novel Moby-Dick by American author Herman Melville. The Pequod and her crew, commanded by Captain Ahab, are central to the story, which, after the initial chapters, takes place almost entirely aboard the ship during a three-year whaling expedition in the Atlantic, Indian and South Pacific oceans. Most of the characters in the novel are part of the Pequod's crew, including the narrator Ishmael. Presley's request to meet Nixon was a same-day affair. Presley wrote the letter very early in the morning while on a red-eye flight headed to Washington, DC; he hand-delivered the letter that same morning. The letter ended up with a staffer who was a fan of Presley's and who was thrilled at the whole idea. Presley, of course, came bearing gifts, but one of those gifts was a gun. Presley was a noted collector of guns and law enforcement badges, and before leaving the West Coast, he had taken a display case off the wall of his home. The case contained a Colt .45 pistol. For some reason, Presley thought this would be a great gift for Nixon. The gun was taken away by Secret Service agents, of course, but the meeting went on as scheduled. That's a vastly different outcome from what would likely happen today, when even tweezers are sometimes seen as a weapon. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Was This Nixon's First Brush With Pop Culture? The photo of Presley and Nixon meeting is extremely popular, but not because it shows a couple of people who were tops in their fields. It's the implied weirdness of seeing hip-shaking pop star Elvis and the straight-laced, often negatively inclined Nixon deliberately standing next to each other. Nixon had a reputation of being out of touch with popular culture, and to see him and the King in the same room, let alone shaking hands and actually looking happy to be there, is still a surprise to many. However, Nixon was more aware of pop culture than people gave him credit for, even appearing on the TV show "Laugh-In" a few years earlier to deliver the show's famous line, "Sock it to me." Nixon's baffled-sounding delivery of the line is sometimes chalked up to him not understanding it, but he really did know what he was doing. Witnesses said he played around with the delivery, eventually settling on the surprised "Who, me?" delivery. His opponent in the 1968 presidential campaign, Hubert Humphrey, turned down the opportunity to record a version himself, and he later said that this could have contributed to his losing to Nixon during the election. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: What Do Graphologists Think Elvis' Handwriting Indicated in the Letter? Any handwritten letter from a famous person will eventually find its way into the sights of graphologists, who try to interpret the writing to see what the writer was really thinking at the time. According to graphologists, Presley's letter to Nixon -- a five-page opus written on airline stationery -- shows inner conflict, flexibility, and a tendency to let emotions rule. His writing has been called discordant, and at least one graphologist thinks his handwriting shows a major conflict in his life -- that he was asking for a federal narcotics badge while simultaneously using amphetamines. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: What May Have Been the Real Reasons Elvis Wanted to Meet Nixon? Presley's stated reason for meeting Nixon was to become a federal agent and to help in the war against drugs. However, Presley may have misunderstood what the badge would let him do. There has been speculation that he thought the badge would actually let him bring guns and drugs into any country. Another potential reason, though probably not the main one, was jealousy of the Beatles. While there's no evidence Presley requested the meeting to try to disparage the Beatles, he did take the opportunity to tell Nixon about how anti-American he thought the Beatles were.
