The cheetah is only "the fastest animal" if you restrict your search to land. It can’t hold a candle to the Peregrine Falcon, lord of the air. The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest moving species on planet Earth. They can gain incredible top speeds of up to 242 mph while at a dive, making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. Peregrine falcons are among the world's most common birds of prey and live on all continents except Antarctica. Members phkrause Posted December 4, 2016 Author Members Posted December 4, 2016 On 12/3/2016 at 1:56 PM, phkrause said: Who received the first heart transplant? The first recipient was 54-year-old Louis Washkansky, a man who suffered from end-stage coronary artery disease and diabetes. The heart itself came from a woman in her mid-20s who had been killed in an accident when she struck while walking across the street. Both individuals had the same blood type, which made the woman a good donor for the surgery. Unfortunately, Washkansky developed an infection in his lungs. In order to prevent rejection of the new heart, he had been given large doses of immunosuppressants, and his immune system could not fight double pneumonia. He died December 21, 1967, after living for 18 days following the transplant. Despite the fact that the patient did not live long, Dr. Barnard was widely praised, and the operation was considered a success On 12/3/2016 at 1:56 PM, phkrause said: How Had Dr. Barnard Prepared for This Amazing Event? Christiaan Neethling Barnard was born November 8, 1922, in Beaufort West, South Africa, the son of a Dutch Reformed Church minister. He lost his brother, Abraham, at age five of cardiac problems, which is rumored to have instilled an early interest in medicine. Barnard received his medical degree from the University of Cape Town Medical School, where he received a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1945. After completing his internship and residency at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and working in several hospitals, he received his Master of Medicine and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cape Town. In 1956, he went to the United States for cardiothoracic surgery postgraduate training at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis on a two-year scholarship. On 12/3/2016 at 1:56 PM, phkrause said: What Were the Medical Advances That Allowed Dr. Barnard to Perform the Transplant? In order to operate on a heart that was not pumping blood, two things were necessary. The temperature of the body had to be artificially lowered. The ability to do this prior to surgery was introduced in 1952 by employing hypothermic techniques. The second inroad that allowed the surgery to proceed was the successful introduction of the heart-lung machine in 1953. It was designed to duplicate the way the cardiopulmonary system worked, keeping blood circulating and making sure the oxygen level of the blood was maintained. On 12/3/2016 at 1:56 PM, phkrause said: How Was Barnard Honored for His Achievements? Among many honors from medical societies, universities, and governments, Christiaan Barnard received the Dag Hammarskjold International Prize and Peace Prize, the Milan International Prize for Science and the Kennedy Foundation Award. In addition, his likeness appeared on a stamp issued by the government of South Africa. On Dec. 15, 1967, his image was featured as a cover on Time Magazine with the caption, "The Transplanted Heart." He continued to operate until 1983 when rheumatoid arthritis of the hands forced him to stop. Forsythe who is never seen, ended up not appearing in more than 100 episodes. Forsythe was never credited in the role, with creator Aaron Spelling telling him he wanted to maintain the mystery of the Charlie character. Members phkrause Posted December 5, 2016 Author Members Posted December 5, 2016 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Which U.S. President paid off the entire national debt? Theodore Roosevelt Bill Clinton Andrew Jackson Ronald Reagan Bill Clinton Answer: Andrew Jackson was the only president to actually pay off the national debt. On Jan. 8, 1835, all the big political names in Washington gathered to celebrate what President Andrew Jackson had just accomplished. A senator rose to make the big announcement: “Gentlemen … the national debt … is PAID.” That was the one time in U.S. history when the country was debt free. It lasted exactly one year. Many people get confused and believe that there is no national debt when there is a surplus in the budget. The last president to balance the budget and regain a surplus of revenue was Bill Clinton. However, Jackson was the last — and only — president to bring the national debt to zero on top of having a balanced budget. When Sarah Michelle Gellar was trying to break into the acting biz, she shot a commercial for Burger King comparing their hamburgers to McDonald's in a way the Golden Arches weren't crazy about. At the time, she was just five years old, but her age didn't stop McDonald's from suing Burger King and naming Gellar in the suit. Said Gellar, "I wasn't allowed to eat there. It was tough because, when you're a little kid, McDonald's is where all your friends have their birthday parties, so I missed out on a lot of apple pies." 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Can't the Burger Giant Operate in Mattoon, Illinois? Visit Mattoon, Illinois, and you'll see a Burger King, just not the one you're thinking of. Before the national burger chain came up with their name, there was a small restaurant in Mattoon already called Burger King. They trademarked the name in their state, and so when the national company came along and started opening restaurants in Illinois, the local Burger King sued. A judge came down in favor of the big boys, saying Burger King (the billion-dollar company, not the mom and pop shop) could open stores wherever they wanted so long as it wasn't within 20 miles of the Mattoon eatery. The small-town Burger King recently changed hands, but the new owner says he won't be giving up the territory to the fast food giant. Mattoon's Burger King is gonna be sticking around. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Do They Call Burger King in Australia? When Burger King tried to expand to Australia, they ran into similar problems: Someone there already had a restaurant named Burger King too. Apparently it's not as original a title as the founders might have thought. So the American chain had to come up with a new name. Their parent company at the time, Pillsbury, gave franchisee Jack Cowin a list of products they already had the trademark on and told him to pick one for his store. Cowin chose Hungry Jack's (based on the Pillsbury pancake mix Hungry Jack) as the name for his burger stores. There's now around 300 Hungry Jacks' in Australia, but their menu is almost identical to that of a US Burger King. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: On April 1st, 2015, You Could Buy What Whopper-Related Product for 5,000 Yen? As an April Fool's Day promotion, Burger King decided to sell a whopper-scented cologne, for one day only, this year in Japan. Turns out their cologne is no laughing matter. Despite going for 5,000 Yen (or roughly 41 US dollars), the product (which came with a free whopper) sold out in about half of Burger King's 90 Japanese locations. According to a USA Today article referencing random Japanese shoppers' reactions to the promotion, "Nanako Katabami bought one as an unusual gift, and quoted her friend as saying it smelled like a Burger King store." We can't think of any scent that could possibly be more attractive. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Arrow Horse Umbrella Bell I think its the umbrella?? Answer: Travelers is one of the nation's largest property casualty companies. The original logo of the red umbrella started in 1870 when it appeared in a newspaper ad for the young insurance company. It was revived in the early 1960s, when it was given its signature red color. The property-casualty insurer has gone to great lengths to stop other companies from hoisting umbrellas as logos. Since 2007, Travelers has challenged at least 30 trademark applications across a range of industries, according to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records. Splash Mountain Matterhorn Bobsleds Space Mountain It's a Small World Matterhorn Answer: Disneyland's Matterhorn is best known for its bobsled-like roller coaster that twists down the giant peak. But few people outside the park know that deep inside the 147-ft. mountain contains a hidden basketball court. After construction of the Matterhorn was completed in 1959, the roller coaster occupied the bottom two-thirds of the mountain, while the top third remained empty. Disney employees voted to put in a basketball court. Because a regulation court wouldn't fit inside the mountaintop, only one hoop was installed. There is perhaps no more universally beloved fictional character than Mickey Mouse. That's right Santa, we said it. But it's hard to imagine Mickey inspiring such cuddly feelings if his name was Mortimer Mouse. Which, for all of Walt Disney's genius, was the name he was originally going to go with for the mouse that would become the centerpiece of his empire. But as we all know, behind every great man, there's a woman. Walt's wife, Lillian Disney, convinced him that Mickey might be a better name than the one she felt was too pompous. Meanwhile, Walt used the Mortimer name down the line, making him Mickey's rival. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What is the Significance of the Park Bench on Display at Disneyland's Opera House? One day, Walt Disney was watching his daughters ride the merry-go-round at Griffith Park in Los Angeles thinking the same thing as many parents in that exact same spot: This is colossally boring. It was right there that Disney says he had the inspiration for his theme park. He wanted an amusement park where both kids and parents could have fun. It was such a pivotal moment for him that he took the bench and put it on display at Disneyland's Opera House. Seems safe to say, he achieved his initial objective. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: In 2006, the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Were Traded to NBC for the Rights to What Play-by-Play Announcer? In 2005, NBC acquired the rights to Sunday Night Football, something that had been previously owned by Disney (and televised on one of their many TV stations: ABC). They quickly acquired SNF's former color commentator, John Madden, whose contract was up. But they ran into trouble when they went after the still-under-contract Al Michaels (The famed play-by-play announcer perhaps most famous for being the guy who shouted "Do you believe in miracles?!" in 1980, when the US Olympic Hockey team beat Russia.) According to then-ESPN president George Bodenheimer, Bob Iger (head of Disney) told him, "I'd be willing to let Al Michaels go if you can get us the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit from NBC." To which Bodenheimer of course replied, "Who or what is Oswald the Lucky Rabbit?" Oswald was the first Walt Disney creation to be a hit. Even before Mickey. Disney sold the character to Universal (which owns Disney), but the company apparently always held a nostalgic fondness for the character. So they called up NBC to said they were willing to make a deal. Al Michaels for the rights to the rabbit. According to Bodenheimer, NBC head Dick Ebersol's response was, of course, "Who or what is Oswald the Lucky Rabbit." And that's how one of sports' greatest play-by-play guys was traded for a cartoon rabbit. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: True or False: Walt Disney Was Cryogenically Frozen. And finally, we're going to end with a piece of information about Walt Disney that isn't true. Somehow, over the years, the story has spread that Walt Disney was cryogenically frozen. But by all documentation, Walt Disney was cremated. And there's one other piece of information that makes this commonly-believed myth unlikely: The first cryogenic freezings happened a month after Disney died. But perhaps it's not a surprise that this story has caught hold. When you see someone who created so much, it's nice to imagine a world where he hasn't left us. Battle of Gettysburg Battle of the Bulge Battle of the Little Bighorn Battle of Bunker Hill Little Bighorn Answer: George Custer was born on this day in 1839 so we thought it was fitting to recognize his birthday with some trivia. Custer was an American cavalry commander who in 1876 led 210 men to their deaths at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The Battle of the Little Bighorn, commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand, pitted troops led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer against a band of Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. Custer was unaware of the number of Indians fighting under the command of Sitting Bull at Little Bighorn, and his forces were outnumbered and overwhelmed in what became known as Custer’s Last Stand.
