Which baseball team's cap did Magnum P.I. wear?

Answer: Magnum, P.I. is an American crime drama television series starring Tom Selleck as Thomas Magnum, a private investigator. On that show, Selleck became famous for habitually wearing a Detroit Tigers cap. Born in Detroit in 1945, Selleck is a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan. When he signed on to do Magnum P.I., he was able to convince the Magnum writers and directors to allow him to wear the Detroit baseball cap. Selleck also succeeded in having the writers make references to the Tigers during several of the episodes.

A common recommendation is to plunk that phone or pad into rice - but those little silica gel packets you may find in shoes, handbags and other goods are best at sucking out the excess moisture, experts say.

(Not only that, I bet that the course Kosher Salt would work also! That's what Jews use to suck out the blood from beef, etc.)

Uranus

Answer: Sir William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus and several moons around other gas giants. In the course of an observation on March 13, 1781 he realized that one celestial body he had observed was not a star, but a planet, Uranus. Herschel lobbied to name the new body “Georgium Sidus”, after King George III, but it was eventually named Uranus after the Greek god of the sky. As a result of his discovery, the monarch knighted Herschel and appointed him to the position of court astronomer.

What Was Love Me Tender Originally Going to Be Called?

Love Me Tender was originally going to be a smaller budget film called The Reno Brothers, and, in fact, the role of Clint Reno in the film was going to be a small part. Then they cast Elvis Presley and everything changed. Presley didn't get top billing in the movie, but he clearly had a huge impact, with the studios giving extra funding for the film, growing the size of his role, changing the title to the name of Elvis' hit song, and adding in several more musical numbers for the King.

This would be the beginning of a long-running pattern of Presley wanting to do serious dramatic roles and the studios putting in a ton of songs for him to sing. The film was a hit and had already made back its money in the first weekend. Presley would go on to star in 31 movies (not counting another two concert documentaries). It would be the last time he didn't get top billing.

Who Was the First Musician Ever to Have a Top Movie, Album and Single All at the Same Time?

When Warner Bros. executives first took a look at the movie Prince had been working on, they thought they had a flop on their hands. The plan was to not even show Purple Rain in more than 200 theaters. But Prince's manager, Rob Cavallo, came up with a plan: He invited movie critics from Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times, and Newsweek to a secret screening of the film in San Diego. The three of them loved it, alleviating the initial Warner Bros. concerns. The movie debuted on 900 screens and grossed over $68 million. Not bad for a movie shot on a budget of $7 million. A month after the film opened, Prince became the first musician to have the top movie, the top album, and the top single on the charts, all at the same time.

What Was the First Rap Song to Win an Oscar?

Speaking of movies that people thought would be a flop, remember 8 Mile? The Eminem film had plenty of skeptics going in, but by the end of opening weekend, it had already earned a $10 million profit. Perhaps even more impressive, Eminem was so busy throughout filming that he barely had time to write the music. He jotted out the numbers during breaks in shooting. But apparently he did something right. Lose Yourself became the first rap song to win an Academy Award. Ever. Unfortunately for Eminem, he was so certain it wouldn't that he didn't even show up to the ceremony.

What Movie Was Once Going to Star Steve McQueen Opposite Diana Ross?

The Bodyguard was one of those movies that was kicking around for a long time. The script reportedly got rejected 67 times and a number of people were considered for the leads. Once upon a time, it was going to be a movie starring Steve McQueen opposite Diana Ross. In fact, Costner has said that he based his performance of Steve McQueen and, if you watch the film, you'll notice Costner has his hair cut the same way as the legendary film star. The producers certainly can't regret the final pairing. "I Will Always Love You" became the top-selling single of the year and is still one of the best sellers of all time. Meanwhile, the soundtrack to the film is the best-selling soundtrack ever.

Answer: "I Will Always Love You" is a song written and originally recorded by Dolly Parton in 1973. Her country version of the track was released as a single in 1974. It was written as a farewell to her one-time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner upon Parton's decision to pursue a solo career. Parton's version attained commercial success, twice reaching number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart — first in 1974; and again in 1982. Whitney Houston recorded a cover version of the song for the 1992 film The Bodyguard which has since become one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Answer: The term Uncle Sam is linked to Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army during the War of 1812. Wilson stamped the barrels with “U.S.” for United States, but soldiers began referring to the food as “Uncle Sam’s.” A local newspaper picked up on the story and Uncle Sam gained widespread acceptance as the nickname for the U.S. federal government. Political cartoonist Thomas Nast began popularizing the image of Uncle Sam giving him the white beard and stars-and-stripes suit that are associated with the character today. In September 1961, the U.S. Congress recognized Samuel Wilson as “the progenitor of America’s national symbol of Uncle Sam.”

How Many U.S. Concerts a Year Did the Von Trapps Do During World War II?

The Sound of Music is based on a real family called the Von Trapps, but man are there a bunch of liberties taken with their story. Among them, they weren't a family who did music as a side gig, they were a really successful band who made all their money performing. After achieving recognition in their own country, they were invited to New York to perform. When they reached America, after claiming they were leaving to visit Italy, they gained a strong following. They averaged a 100 U.S. concerts per year during World War II, bringing in $1,000 per show. They were Columbia's most successful choral group. And, oh yeah, they sang on an Elvis album.

The Musical Was the Last From What Famous Duo?

Rodgers and Hammerstein created some of the most memorable musicals of all time. Oklahoma! South Pacific. The King and I. And their final production was the The Sound of Music. Hammerstein passed away in 1960 from stomach cancer. Of course, by then, he had long left his mark on the world of musical theater. What would have been his 100th birthday was celebrated worldwide in 1995, and the following year three of his musicals were revived on Broadway simultaneously. They all won Tonys.

Who Referred to the Musical as "The Sound of Mucus?"

The Sound of Music movie could have easily looked very different. Julie Andrews didn't want to do it because she thought the role was too similar to Mary Poppins, which she had just done the year before. Director Robert Wise didn't like the story. And then there was Christopher Plummer who out and out hated it, calling it "The Sound of Mucus." Plummer coined the title because, as he put it, "it was so awful and sentimental and gooey." He found solace in food and alcohol, gaining significant weight throughout filming and sometimes drinking before shooting. But for all their kicking and screaming, the three made what was, at the time, the most successful movie ever. It remains one of the top-grossing films of all time when adjusted for inflation

The real Maria Von Trapp, of course, inspired the original musical and was invited to see it performed. She then had a cameo in the movie itself. And then, when opening night came around... she never got an invite. Shocked, she went to the producers to address what was presumably an oversight. Said the producers, "there were no seats left." Hey, what can you do? Apparently The Sound of Music was so darn popular that even Maria Von Trapp herself couldn't get a ticket.

Answer: Ulysses S. Grant’s given name was actually Hiram Ulysses Grant. His phantom middle initial is the result of an error from Ohio Congressman Thomas Hamer, who accidentally wrote the future general’s name as “Ulysses S. Grant” when he nominated him to attend West Point. The name stuck, and he eventually accepted it as his own. “Find some name beginning with “S” for me,” he joked in an 1844 letter to his future wife, Julia Dent. “You know I have an “S” in my name and don’t know what it stands for.”

Answer: Luke Spencer and Laura Webber are fictional characters, and the supercouple from the daytime drama General Hospital. The couple wed at the end of the hour-long show on November 17, 1981; the event was watched by 30 million viewers and remains the highest-rated hour in American soap opera history. The event featured a cameo from Elizabeth Taylor and even landed the couple on the cover of Newsweek. Schwarzenegger Was Already a Millionaire Before He Became an Acting Superstar. Where Did He Make All That Money?

Arnold Schwarzenegger was already super rich before he became an acting megastar, but that money didn't come from bodybuilding. Well, some of it did, but back then it wasn't as lucrative a field. So after dominating the bodybuilding world in Austria, he moved to America with roughly $27,000 from winnings and endorsements. Then he invested it.

He bought an apartment building for $214,000 and sold it at more than 50% profit a little over a year later. Then he bought a bigger place and flipped that. Then a bigger one. Soon he was a 25-year-old millionaire from real estate. His good business sense continued over the years. When he disclosed his finances while running for governor, it turned out he was involved in 19 ventures valued over $1 million and over 100 ventures total. Plenty were in the fitness industry but also in movie theaters, internet software companies, and restaurants. The guy even owned a Boeing 747 he leased to Singapore Airlines at one point.

(I also remember when he married into the Kennedy's, everyone said that he married for the money!! He was probably as rich, if not more!!)

James Cameron Wanted Schwarzenegger to Play What Role in The Terminator?

James Cameron wanted Schwarzenegger to star in The Terminator. In other words, he wanted Schwarzenegger to play Kyle Reese. Ya know, the good guy who has all the lines and saves humanity. But Schwarzenegger didn't see Reese as the star; he realized that the robot was the more interesting, cool character. According to Arnold, he saw a concept painting of the machine and thought, "I am the Terminator." Seems he knew what he was doing.

According to Schwarzenegger, What Movie Earned Him the Biggest Paycheck of His Career?

Arnold Schwarzenegger was the first actor to earn $15 million for a movie (Terminator 2) and broke another record when he made a little under $30 million for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. (Having only 700 words of dialogue in T2 meant that he made 20 grand per word. But neither of those were the highest paying movie of his career. That honor was a film called Twins, where he played Danny DeVito's twin brother.

The movie studios were hesitant about putting the action star in a ridiculous comedy but Arnold, DeVito, and director Ivan Reitman offered to do it for free, assuming they got a percentage of revenue on the back end. At the time, this was pretty unheard of and the studios happily agreed. The three of them got 45% of the movie, which earned over $200 million at theaters and even more in cable rights, video, etc. Said Schwarzenegger, "The movie went through the roof internationally and domestically. I think we all made more money on that movie than on anything we've ever done, even though I had salaries of $30 million dollars on some movies."

Arnold Schwarzenegger Holds What Major Bodybuilding Record?

Over the course of his bodybuilding career, Arnold Schwarzenegger won 13 major competitions, a world record. He was once Chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and he was a charter member of the National Fitness Hall of Fame. The Guinness Book of World Records even called him, "the most perfectly developed man in the history of the world." But back then, he had bigger plans. According to friends, he once told them he had three goals: Move to America, become an actor, and marry a Kennedy. Needless to say, when Schwarzenegger sets his mind to something, he usually accomplishes it. He did all three.
