Answer: Harry Houdini died on Halloween in 1926. The official cause of death was peritonitis, internal poisoning resulting from a ruptured appendix. For full ten years after Houdini's death, his wife Bess conducted a séance each Halloween. Houdini had told Bess that if it were possible, he would send a message to her "from beyond", in secret code. Though Bess eventually stopped participating in the séances after 1937, members of the magic fraternity have kept the tradition going. Each Halloween, there are numerous Houdini séances held around the world. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Where exactly the tradition of trick or treating started is a matter of some debate. But when the custom first came to America in the 1920s and 30s, it wasn't just kids going door to door for candy. The practice back then would yield all sorts of treats including toys and money. And let's be honest, if you're a kid, you love candy, but you probably wouldn't have minded if you got a few less bags of candy corn and a bit more cash. So why did we make the transition to virtually everyone just giving fun-sized candy? You guessed it, the candy companies. They saw an opportunity and started marketing tiny, individually wrapped candies to families who mostly adopted the idea because it was just easier. On 10/31/2016 at 2:52 PM, phkrause said: Why Do Certain Animal Shelters Not Give Out Black Cats Around Halloween? Call a local animal shelter asking to adopt a black cat today and there's a solid chance they'll say no. Most people trace this tradition to the late 1980s when shelters became worried that people would sacrifice black cats as some sort of Satanic ritual. However, it's not the case everywhere. Said Vice President of Shelter Research and Development at the ASPCA, Emily Weiss, in a piece on the Huntington Post, "Years ago, this used to be pretty common - that shelters would not adopt out cats during Halloween for fear of something horrible happening to the cats, but we don't hear too much anymore. And many, many shelters are actually [holding] a special black cat promotion around the holiday." On 10/31/2016 at 2:52 PM, phkrause said: Certain Halloween Traditions Used to Focus More Around What Green Vegetable? Halloween used to focus a lot more on a food that's almost the opposite of candy: cabbage. In fact, some towns even called Halloween "Cabbage Night." Girls used cabbage stumps as part of a fortune-telling game to make predictions about their future husbands, and kids threw cabbages at neighbors' houses. It's umm... it's amazing the tradition didn't hold up. On 10/31/2016 at 2:52 PM, phkrause said: What Irish Tradition Turned the Fortunes of a Once-Unpopular Food? In the olden days, people didn't really like pumpkins, and they were more something farmers had to deal with getting rid of than something harvested for delicious pies. But in the 19th century, Irish immigrants started coming to America, bringing their traditions with them. Traditions that included carving turnips into lanterns for the Celtic festival of Samhain - a key originator of the Halloween holiday. And they found the perfect American substitute for the turnip: The pumpkin. Pumpkin sales and they became a staple of fall eating. All in all, it's hard to argue that it's a better choice than cabbage. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Alabama Texas Arkansas Tennessee Wow what a chose!! I'm gonna say Texas Answer: In Alabama, it’s illegal to dress up as a priest or other religious clergy member for Halloween. According to Section 13A-14-4 of the Alabama Code, "Whoever, being in a public place, fraudulently pretends by garb or outward array to be a minister of any religion, or nun, priest, rabbi or other member of the clergy, is guilty of a misdemeanor." Breaking the law could earn you a $500 fine and up to a year in jail. If you live in Alabama, we hope that wasn’t your plan for today. If so, you may want to shelve the collar or consider heading to a different state to celebrate. Theodore Roosevelt Thomas Jefferson Woodrow Wilson Abraham Lincoln Answer: The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800. President Theodore Roosevelt officially gave the White House its current name, engraving it on his stationery in 1901. Prior to that, the building was known variously as the “President's Palace,” the “President's House,” and the “Executive Mansion.” Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Members phkrause Posted November 2, 2016 Author Members Posted November 2, 2016 17 hours ago, phkrause said: Where Had Adams Lived Before the White House? In the final months of what turned out to be his only term as president, Adams had moved to Washington, D.C., when that city became the nation's capital in June 1800. While he waited for construction on the President's House to be completed, he lived in Tunnicliffe's City Hotel, located near the U.S. Capitol, which was also still under construction at the time. Prior to the relocation of the nation's capital from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., Adams and his wife Abigail lived in the Pennsylvania city's President's House, located at the intersection of 6th and Market Streets. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Designed the Original White House? In 1790 during the presidential administration of George Washington, Congress passed the Residence Act setting forth a decade-long plan for the establishment of a permanent national capital on the banks of the Potomac River. This future capital, referred to then as The Federal City, needed buildings to house various operations of the federal government, and the legislation provided a framework for the construction of such structures. To select a design for an executive mansion to house the president, then-Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson sponsored a contest, which was won by Irish-born architect James Hoban. The architect not only provided the design for the executive mansion but also supervised its construction, which was in its final stages when Adams moved to Washington, D.C., in mid-1800. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: Is the Original White House Still Standing? Parts of the original structure have survived the ravages of time, and the overall building -- despite additions over the years -- looks much as it did when John Adams first moved in. The original executive mansion was heavily damaged during the War of 1812 when British troops invaded the nation's capital and put the White House to the torch in August 1814. The mansion's roof and interior were destroyed, and many called for a new structure to be built from scratch, possibly in a different city. Then-President James Madison rejected such talk and moved quickly to engage the structure's original designer, Hoban, to supervise the reconstruction project. Portions of the building's original walls were inspected and deemed to be sound. Reconstruction moved quickly, and the rebuilt White House officially opened its doors to President James Monroe in September 1817. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: Were Adams and His Wife Pleased with Their New Residence? Although the newly built executive mansion looked splendid from the outside, its interior left its first residents -- John and Abigail Adams -- less than thrilled. The couple found that the mansion was cold and damp during the winter months, making it an uncomfortable place to live and work. In a letter to a friend, Abigail said that the residence was tolerable during the winter only if a fire was kept burning in every room of the mansion. Abigail directed that the presidential family's wash be hung to dry in an unused "audience room" (now known as the East Room).
