Members phkrause Posted October 23, 2016 Author Members Posted October 23, 2016 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Set Off an Alarm at Volk Field Air Base That Could Have Caused a Nuclear War? A few days after Kennedy's TV address, alarms went off at Volk Field Air Base announcing Soviet Bombers taking flight over the North Pole. The US prepared Jets with nuclear air-to-air missiles to counter a potential Russian invasion. The Soviet nuclear threat was suddenly real. The cold war was about to go to hot when... the US realized it was a false alarm. A stray black bear had accidentally triggered a series of alarms while digging around near Volk Field. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: A Hotline Between Where and Where Was Installed after the Cuban Missile Crisis? As two countries sat on the brink of nuclear war, one factor made negotiations especially tough. It took forever to get a message from one side to the other. Formal communications between the two sides had to go through a giant web of diplomatic bureaucracy that could literally take six hours. It was such a bogged down system that the two sides ended up communicating through public announcements through the press. When everything was done, a hotline was set up between the White House and the Kremlin and on August 30th, 1963, Kennedy became the first president to have a hotline directly to Russia. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did Vaili Arkhipov Prevent a Nuclear War? Another atomic close call came on October 27th, when an American destroyer was dropping depth charges on a Russian submarine. The submarine-- not realizing those death charges were nonlethal attempts to make it surface-- thought the two sides must be at war, and he readied a nuclear torpedo to attack a US aircraft carrier. Luckily for both nations, he needed approval from his senior officers before he could launch that strike, and one officer, Vasili Arkhipov, refused to give it. Had Vasili approved the strike, it likely would have set dominoes in motion for literally thousands of nukes to be fired around the world, including at non-US and non-Soviet targets. Years later, PBS aired a documentary about Arkhipov titled "The Man Who Saved the World." It wasn't an overstatement. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Happened On December 1st, 1962 with Regards to the Cuban Missile Crisis? Eventually, Kennedy and Krushchev came to a peaceful resolution. Krushchev agreed to withdraw his missiles and the US promised not to invade Cuba while also secretly removing missiles from Turkey. On November 20th, 1962, Kennedy lifted a blockade he had imposed on Cuba after determining that the Soviets had removed all their nuclear weapons. But contrary to what Kennedy believed and the way you might remember it, they hadn't. They had left behind about 100 nuclear weapons that had gone undetected with the idea that Russia might be able to train Cuba to use them, then hand the weapons over. The only thing that saved the US from this plan was Krushchev's eventual realization that Castro was too much of a wildcard to entrust with nuclear weapons. The Soviets removed the rest of their weapons, finishing the effort on December 1st, 1962. Members phkrause Posted October 24, 2016 Author Members Posted October 24, 2016 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Did Judge Edward Mann at One Point Consider Recusing Himself from an Apple Lawsuit? The first guy to notice it was George Harrison. He was paging through a magazine when he saw an ad for an Apple computer. It caught his eye because Apple was the name of the company the Beatles set up to handle their own affairs. The two companies reached an agreement that involved Apple staying out of the music industry, an issue which flared up and sparked a lawsuit in the early 90s when people started using Apple computers to write and edit music. And if that sparked a lawsuit, you can imagine how the music company was going to react when Apple came out with iTunes. Apple (the Beatles' version) sued Apple (the computer giant) in a case that went before Judge Edward Mann. Mann at first considered recusing himself because, well, he owned an iPod so how impartial could he be? Mann stayed on the case, at one point even stopping the plaintiff as he explained a piece of Apple software and saying, "iLife is not a complete novelty to me. I've got it and I use it." The judge ultimately ruled in favor of the computer company. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: In 2004, West Midland Police Urged People to Stop Wearing What? Thanks to those silhouette ads Apple used so effectively in the iPod's early days, their white earbuds became almost as iconic as the iPod themselves. That was good marketing, but it also worked to put a bullseye on people's backs for muggers passing by. When the iPod was first released, stores could barely keep them in stock so many people were buying them, and the price easily reached several hundred dollars. So thieves who saw someone with white earbuds knew they had a valuable target on their hands. It got so bad that the West Midland Police in England actually recommended people just stop wearing those signature headphones. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did Vinnie Chieco Contribute to the iPod Creation Process? Steve Jobs assembled a team to come up with a name for his new invention, and it was ultimately Vinnie Chieco of that team who got the job done. "As soon as I saw the white iPod, I thought 2001," Chieco explained in a 2006 interview. "Open the pod bay door, Hal! Then it was just a matter of adding the 'i' prefix, as in 'iMac.'" Jobs didn't like the name at first, but eventually changed his mind. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: In 2014, How Much Did a U2 iPod Sell for on eBay? Perhaps no generation is more capable of generating instant nostalgia than our own. So when the iPod Classic was discontinued it shouldn't have been a surprise to see demand for the original model skyrocket. If you went on eBay in 2014, the year that happened, you could see an original iPod sell for $20,000. But that's nothing compared to the still-sealed limited edition U2 iPod that went for $90,000. But who knows? Those'll probably be worth even more down the line. They are a piece of technological history. Profiles in Courage is a volume of short biographies describing acts of bravery and integrity by eight United States Senators throughout the Senate's history. The book profiles senators who defied the opinions of their party and constituents to do what they felt was right and suffered severe criticism and losses in popularity because of their actions. Members phkrause Posted October 25, 2016 Author Members Posted October 25, 2016 20 hours ago, phkrause said: How Fast Was The Concorde's Fastest Ever Transatlantic Flight? On February 7, 1996, the Concorde flew from New York to London in 2 hours, 56 minutes and 59 seconds, breaking a world record by 90 seconds. The airline was so fast that if you left at the right time and flew east, you could catch up with the sun and watch it rise all over again. Or, even cooler, if you flew west on flights, you could arrive at a (local) time before the (local) time you left. And indeed, that was British Airways' slogan for the plane: "Arrive before you leave." 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Mildly Unsettling Things Would Happen to the Planes During Flights? As the plane zoomed through the air, the friction of the air passing by would create more heat than usually experienced by a commercial airline. The windows would become hot to the touch and the plane itself would actually stretch 6-10 inches. And due to the force being applied when the plane turned and the narrow fuselage height, the plane would actually twist during flights or take off. In reality, the Concorde was very safe and, until 2000, had never crashed. But you were probably better off not thinking about what was happening as you flew. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Was on That Final Flight? Due to rising costs and lowering ticket demand, the Concorde eventually stopped offering commercial flights. When it made that final journey, it was somewhat of an event, with spectators seated in a grandstand at the destination and people from around the world paying attention. The final flight featured Joan Collins, Christie Brinkley, Lord Marshall (chairman for British Airways), Sir David Frost (of "Frost/Nixon" fame), and Chris Gibson-Smith (chairman of the London stock exchange). 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did they Do with the Planes? When they were shutting down, Richard Branson tried to buy the fancy planes, offering as much five million pounds for each, but was rebuffed. Many pieces of the plane and items from them were then sold at auction at Christie's. You could buy cockpit seats, flight manuals, or something called a Machmeter. Clearly, people were quite fond of the aircraft. A $100 blanket went for $2,000 and a needle nose went for $550,000, which of course begs the question: Once you buy it, where the heck are you gonna put it?
