E Pluribus Unum In God We Trust JULY IV MDCCLXXVI Novus Ordo Seclorum July IV MDCCLXXVI Answer: The Statue of Liberty was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The copper statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor, was built by Gustave Eiffel and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed with JULY IV MDCCLXXVI, Roman numerals for July 4, 1776. Widely known as the "Father of the Statue of Liberty," French law professor and politician Edouard Rene de Laboulaye was a great admirer of American President Abraham Lincoln and also an outspoken abolitionist. In 1865, after the Union victory in the Civil War and the freeing of U.S. slaves, Laboulaye first proposed creating a monument to honor the United States. It is widely speculated that Laboulaye hoped that a French gift honoring the American ideals of democracy and freedom would help to strengthen the cause for democracy in his own homeland. World-famous French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi selected his mother, Charlotte, as his model for the monumental work he originally titled "Liberty Enlightening the World," and which over the years has become known simply as the Statue of Liberty. One of the first to discover the statue's resemblance to the sculptor's mother was French Senator Jules Bozerian. Invited by Bartholdi to join him for a night at the opera, Bozerian entered Bartholdi's box and was immediately struck by the sight of a woman who looked virtually identical to the statue. When Bozerian told Bartholdi of his reaction, the sculptor smiled and said, "But do you know who this lady is? She's my mother." On 10/28/2016 at 0:44 PM, phkrause said: How Did the Newly Installed Statue Differ in Appearance from Today? When Bartholdi's soaring statue was first installed on its monumental base on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor, the exterior surface of the statue itself was made up of copper plates and looked exactly like a shiny new copper penny. It took about 20 years of exposure to the elements for the statue's exterior to acquire the greenish-blue patina it has today. On 10/28/2016 at 0:44 PM, phkrause said: How Did a Few Lines of Poetry Alter Public Perception of the Statue? When first donated by the people of France to the people of America, the statue was designed to honor the long-term friendship between the two countries, epitomized by French support for the American Revolution roughly a century earlier. Over the years, however, it has become a welcoming symbol for literally millions of immigrants who have made their way to America to escape grinding poverty and tyranny in their homelands. On a bronze plaque fastened to an inside wall of the statue's pedestal are the lines of an Emma Lazarus poem titled "The New Colossus." Its last few lines perhaps best capture the image of the statue held by most Americans today: "Give me your tired, your poor,/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,/The wretched refuse of your teeming shore./Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,/I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Bartholdi's statue was finished in January of 1884, and six months later a formal presentation of it was made to the American ambassador in Paris on July 4. It was then disassembled, packed into 214 cases, and loaded onto the frigate Isere. In October 1886, the structure was officially presented as at gift of friendship from the people of France, and installed on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor. Froot Loops Lucky Charms Trix Cocoa Puffs ?? I'm guessing Froot Loops!! Answer: Toucan Sam is the cartoon toucan mascot for Kellogg’s Froot Loops breakfast cereal. Toucan Sam became the mascot for Froot Loops cereal in 1963. With his snappy catch phrase, "follow my nose, it always knows," he became an instant success. In the original commercials, Toucan Sam spoke Pig Latin, and the phrase “OOT-fray OOPS-lay.” Soon after, he began to speak English with the British accent we are familiar with today. There is a debate about whether each loop tastes the same, or if they have different flavors, but according to Kellogg’s they are all the same. Members phkrause Posted October 30, 2016 Author Members Posted October 30, 2016 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was the Internet Originally Built? Back in 1969, nobody thought the internet would become the lifeblood of our world the way that it has today. Back then it was more of a backup plan. The idea was that if there was ever a Soviet nuclear strike, we wanted a way to continue communicating with each other. As a result, it wasn't invented by Silicon Valley techies in their garage, it was made by the military's then-new division, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). They were more trying to create a phone system than anything else, but someone in the UK also had the idea that it would be helpful if you could send "packets" which contained data. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did Tim Berners-Lee Invent in 1989? Tim Berners-Lee goes on the long list of people you may have never heard of that absolutely transformed the world. He's the guy who invented the World Wide Web. Contrary to what you may believe, the internet and the web are not the same thing. The web is the system many of us use to navigate the parts of the internet that we most frequently use on a daily basis. Think of it as the web linking websites and similar web resources out there, but not what you use when you download apps on iTunes. (Our apologies to every nerd out there for giving what we're sure is a horribly imprecise explanation.) Since then, Berners-Lee has worked tirelessly to expand the efficacy of the web and the amount of opportunity people have to use it. He was named one of the TIME 100, listing the most impactful people of the 20th century, and in 2004 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Once Said, "During My Service in the United States Congress, I Took the Initiative in Creating the Internet?" Al Gore has taken so much flack for claiming he invented the internet, you probably believe he actually did it. The quote was part of a rambling monologue he gave essentially laying out his resume in an interview with Wolf Blitzer. He said the quote you see above somewhere in a field of other political speak, and when he was done talking everyone moved on thinking nothing of it. Then came Declan McCullagh from Wired who saw what Gore said and decided to write about it, jabbing at Gore for claiming to create something that was launched in 1969, when Gore was 21 and nowhere near a position of any authority. After that, Gore's political opponents helped push the snowball down the hill until everyone was joking that Gore claimed he invented the internet and even now, over a decade and a half later, you probably still remember this being a thing. But what Gore was trying to reference was a real thing he did that was incredibly impactful. He sponsored and pushed through Congress the 1991 High-Performance Computing and Communications Act. It was so much Gore's baby that it was known as the Gore Bill. The funding that bill provided had an impact on a number of things including the creation of the Mosaic Web browser. Said Marc Andreessen, founder of Netscape and a guy who worked on Mosaic, "If it had been left to private industry, it wouldn't have happened, at least, not until years later." 21 hours ago, phkrause said: A Photo of Lena Söderberg Became the Most Widely Used Picture for Internet Image Processing Research. Where Did That Photo Come from? In the early days of trying to send images over the internet, engineers would use random stock photos to test out different algorithms they were creating. That is, until someone pulled the top third of a picture from Playboy magazine of a girl named Lena Söderberg (listed in the magazine as Lena Sjööblom) and proposed sending that. The picture was perfect for testing, it had a feather in it that demanded a system that depicted details well and it had a human face. Plus it was something the engineers could get excited about. The photo became the most widely used picture for image-processing research and testing, including being prominently featured in the development of the JPEG. Stamps Postcards Matchboxes Shells 18 hours ago, Gail said: Let's try stamps. You got it Answer: A philatelist is someone who studies or collects stamps. The first postage stamps were made available on May 1, 1840, in England, and it didn't take long for the hobby of stamp collecting to arise. Philatelic organizations sprang up soon after people started collecting and studying stamps. They include local, national and international clubs and societies where collectors come together to share their hobby. Philately is the collection and study of postage stamps. "Howdy" "Bonjour" "Ahoy" "Yo" My guess is "Yo" 14 hours ago, Gail said: What an awesome question!! Hmm... I will guess... Howdy. Answer: Saying “ahoy” was at one time the preferred way to answer the phone. The very brief popularity of this telephone greeting stemmed from the fact that “ahoy” was Alexander Graham Bell’s preferred way to answer the phone. The term ahoy was generally associated as a nautical term used for hailing ships. The dictionary says it was Thomas Edison who put hello into common usage. He urged people to instead say "hello" when answering. Because “hello” quickly usurped “ahoy”, by 1889 telephone operators became known as “hello-girls”. Members phkrause Posted October 31, 2016 Author Members Posted October 31, 2016 14 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was Significant about the Date Adams Died? The date that John Adams died was significant in several ways. Primarily, it was the 4th of July, the day that we now celebrate as our Independence Day. But as if that wasn't significant enough, it was also the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Finally, it was significant in a third way: it was the same day that Thomas Jefferson, Adams' successor to the White House, died as well. Strangely, three out of the first five presidents died on the 4th of July, culminating in the death of James Monroe, five years later. 14 hours ago, phkrause said: On Which Currency Does the Portrait of John Adams Appear? Unlike many of the founding fathers, John Adams has pretty much been left off of all of the currency. The only thing that the portrait of John Adams has appeared on was a dollar coin that was issued in 2007. In case you are wondering, Washington is on the dollar, Lincoln on the five, Jackson the twenty, Grant on the fifty, McKinley on the five hundred dollar bill, Cleveland on the one thousand, Madison on the five thousand dollar bill and Woodrow Wilson on the $100,000 bill, which is the highest bill made. The ten and the one hundred dollar bills do not feature presidents. 14 hours ago, phkrause said: True or False: John Adams Married His Aunt? Not true, but John Adams did marry his 3rd cousin, Abigail Smith, in 1764. They went on to have six children, including future president John Quincy Adams. 14 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did John Adams Think the President Should be Called? 11 hours ago, Gregory Matthews said: Her Majesty. John Adams wanted the president to be called something that would put them on the level with the royalty of England. He suggested "His Majesty the President" or the ridiculously verbose "His Highness, the President of the United States of America, and Protector of the Rights of the Same." When Adams became president, many opponents mocked him for his ideas behind his back calling him "your rotundity." Answer: Halloween began in Ireland as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31st, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating.
