What U.S. President had the most electoral votes ever?

My vote goes to Kennedy! But I think Reagan won by a landslide, so maybe he did??

Answer: The United States presidential election of 1984 was a contest between the incumbent President Ronald Reagan and former Vice President Walter Mondale. Ronald Reagan received 525 electoral votes, winning 49 states and making him the president who received the most electoral votes ever. Mondale's only electoral votes came from the District of Columbia and his home state of Minnesota—which he won by a mere 3761 votes. Reagan's 525 electoral votes is the highest total ever received by a presidential candidate.

How Close Was the Election?

Kennedy won the presidency by a very narrow margin, outpolling Nixon by only 112,827 votes, the closest presidential election since 1916 when Democrat Woodrow Wilson won 49.2 percent of the popular vote, compared with 46.1 percent for his Republican opponent, Charles E. Hughes. Kennedy's victory over Nixon in the popular vote was even narrower, 49.7 percent to Nixon's 49.5 percent. In the electoral vote, the margin was considerably greater. Kennedy won the popular vote in 22 states, including several of the country's most populous, earning him 303 electoral votes. Nixon was victorious in 26 states, but several of these were less populous and thus earned him fewer electoral votes for a total of 219.

What Set Kennedy Apart from Previous Presidents?

Only 43 when he took the oath of office, Kennedy became the youngest man ever to be elected president. However, he was not the youngest man to ever serve as president, a distinction that went to Teddy Roosevelt who at age 42 took over as president after the assassination of President William McKinley in September 1901. Kennedy was also the first Roman Catholic to hold America's highest office. More than 30 years earlier, Al Smith, also a Roman Catholic, was the Democratic Party's unsuccessful candidate for president in the election of 1928.

How Did Kennedy Fare in His Debates Against Nixon?

Still a relatively new medium in 1960, television played a significant role in the presidential contest between Kennedy and Nixon. On September 26, 1960, the two candidates squared off for the first televised presidential debate in American history. An estimated 70 million TV viewers watched the debate, and millions of others listened to the debate on the radio.

Nixon, still recovering from a bout with the flu and looking somewhat pale, seemed to most Americans to be less presidential in appearance than Kennedy. While most of those who viewed the debate on television came away from the event convinced that Kennedy had won the face-off, those who listened to the debate on radio believed that Nixon had bested his opponent. Although most Americans felt the men were evenly matched in the following three debates, the edge Kennedy gained in the first debate helped him to move ahead of Nixon in the final analysis.

Who Were the Candidates' Running Mates?

Kennedy, strongly associated with the more liberal northern states, wisely decided to select U.S. Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas as his running mate. Popular with his fellow southern Democrats, Johnson was then serving as Senate majority leader. Nixon, who served as vice president during the two-term presidential administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower, picked former U.S. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. of Massachusetts. Lodge, who had also served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, was well versed on foreign policy, making him a perfect fit for Nixon's campaign strategy, which was pinned largely on foreign policy issues rather than domestic policy.

Answer: If no candidate receives a majority of Electoral votes, the House of Representatives elects the President from the 3 Presidential candidates who received the most Electoral votes. Each state delegation has one vote. The Senate would elect the Vice President from the 2 Vice Presidential candidates with the most Electoral votes. Each Senator would cast one vote for Vice President. As of 2016, the House of Representatives has elected the President on two occasions, in 1801 (Thomas Jefferson) and in 1825 (John Quincy Adams).

January 20th

Answer: Donald Trump will be sworn in on Friday, January 20, 2017, also known as Inauguration Day. The 45th President of the Unites States will be sworn in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol at exactly 12:00 pm noon, when the term of President Barack Obama expires. Donald Trump now takes on the title of President-Elect. Prior to the Twentieth Amendment, Inauguration Day took place on March 4, when the Constitution first took effect in 1789. The last president to officially be sworn in on that date was Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 4, 1933.

True or False: The Fall of the Berlin Wall Was an Accident.

True. On November 9th, 1989, Gunter Schabowski was placed in charge of announcing East Germany's newest travel rules, which entailed a new visa application process launching the following day that would allow certain people to go from East Berlin to West Berlin. Problem is, apparently nobody explained all this to Gunter Schabowski.

When he got to the microphone, he announced that all travel visa restrictions would be lifted, because he thought that was actually what he was supposed to say. When asked when this would happen, a flustered Schabowski started leafing through his notes before giving up and saying, "As far as I'm aware, immediately." Well that was all it took for history to happen.

When people came to the Bornholmer Street checkpoint to cross over to West Berlin, an officer named Harald Jager was caught off guard. Overwhelmed by the moment and not getting any help from the higher ups, Jager allowed people to cross over, following the apparent instructions of Schabowski. At that point, the floodgates were open, people started pouring over and down came the wall.

What Historical Distinction Belongs to Corporal Conrad Schumann?

The Wall was up for all of two days when the first person illegally crossed it: border guard Corporal Conrad Schumann jumped over three feet of barbed wire to make it to the other side. Over the next several decades, over 5,000 more made their way across despite ever mounting defense systems that included dog runs, barricades, beds of nails, land mines, soldiers and electric fences. Over 100 people died trying to make the same trek, with the last doing so in 1989 when a person trying to escape by hot air balloon hit some power lines.

What Musician Had His Biggest Concert Ever Playing for 300,000 East Berliners on the Wall in 1988?

Bruce Springsteen's played a lot of shows, but none bigger than the night he performed in front of 300,000 people from East Berlin. The show lasted four hours, and, yes, like any good Springsteen concert, it included people hollering along with him as he sang "Born in the USA." Springsteen also played "Chimes of Freedom." He followed that up with a short speech in favor of tearing down the wall and said, "I'm not here for or against any government. I've come to play rock 'n' roll for you in the hope that one day all the barriers will be torn down." One guy named Erik Kirschbaum even wrote a book called Rocking the Wall - the Berlin Concert that Changed the World, where he argued that hearing those words inspired East Berliners in a way that proved instrumental to them viewing themselves as ready for freedom roughly 18 months later.

What U.S. President Actually Supported the Idea of the Wall?

President Ronald Reagan got plenty of press when he told Mr. Gorbachev to tear down that wall, but not every US president opposed the barrier. In fact, the one in office at the time it went up supported the idea. Prior to the erecting of the Berlin Wall, the city was still divided between communist and capitalist interests, just without that giant wall (or, sorry, two walls) enforcing the boundary. With people crossing over, tension was building between US President John F. Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. Khrushchev threatened to cut off US access to West Berlin, and if they did that, it seemed that the US might respond with military force. So the US was grateful for any solution that didn't lead to bloodshed, even one as problematic as the Berlin Wall. Kennedy reportedly told an aide, "It's not a very nice solution, but a wall is a hell of a lot better than a war."

Which candidate won an election that was ultimately decided by the Supreme Court?

Answer: The United States presidential election of 2000 was a contest between George W. Bush and Al Gore. The result of the election hinged on Florida, where the margin of victory triggered a mandatory recount. The Florida vote was ultimately settled in Bush's favor by a margin of 537 votes when the U.S. Supreme Court, in Bush v. Gore, stopped a recount that had been proposed by the Florida Supreme Court. That in turn gave Bush a majority of votes in the Electoral College and victory in the presidential election.

Answer: George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States in New York City on April 30, 1789. The inaugural ceremony took place on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street. Washington took the presidential oath of office, administered by Chancellor of New York Robert Livingston in view of throngs of people gathered on the streets. The inauguration marked the commencement of the first four-year term of George Washington as President of the United States.

In 2002, What Sesame Street Character Testified before Congress?

This is the opening paragraph of an April, 2002 CNN.com post, "In what may be the first appearance of a Muppet before a congressional committee, 'Sesame Street' favorite Elmo donned his best suit and tie and took his cause to Capitol Hill." May be?? What does that mean? That it's possible there was another Muppet testimonial before that point, but we just never noticed?

Well, whether it had happened before or not, it was still a fun sight when everyone's favorite red ball of fuzz hopped on the mic in front of the Education Appropriations Subcommittee to call for more funding for music research and instruments for school programs. The three-year-old Muppet said he wanted to make sure that, "when Elmo goes to school, there will be the instruments to play." And if Elmo can't soften a congressional subcommittee's heart, we don't know what can.

Ethan Gilsdorf of Psychology Today Once Wrote a Piece about the Mental Disorder Afflicting Each Sesame Street Character. Which One Did He Say Had OCD?

Apparently, Psychology Today has run out of real life people to diagnose, because in 2012, writer Ethan Gilsdorf decided it would be a fun article to figure out what mental disorder each Sesame Street character had. Read the article and you start to realize, he might actually be right. According to Gilsdorf, Cookie Monster has an eating disorder (undeniable), Ernie has ADD, and Oscar the Grouch could have any of a number of issues making him so irritable.

Then there's the case of Big Bird having imagined his friend Snuffleupagus for years which earned him a schizophrenic diagnosis, but this has been argued by other psychologists because, of course, Gilsdorf isn't the only one who's written about this. In 1985, Snuffleupagus finally became visible to everyone which some have argued makes this a case of Shared Psychotic Disorder. Have you figured out which one has OCD yet? It would, of course, be the one who can't help but count everything he sees.

Sesame Street Composer Christopher Cerf Expressed Shock and Disgust When He Heard Reports That Music from the Show Was Being Used for What?

In 2012, it was reported that Sesame Street songs, or slightly altered versions of them, were being played at loud volume on a continuous loop as a form of torture for prisoners of Guantanamo Bay. According to the reports (in a documentary from Al Jazeera), the music would sometimes be played for days. Sesame Street composer Christopher Cerf, who penned the show's theme song along with another 200 ditties used by the program, expressed great shock when interviewed, but then also disgust. "I didn't really like the idea that I was helping to break down prisoners, but it was much worse when I heard later that they were actually using the music in Guantanamo to do deep interrogations to inflict long-term pain on prisoners so that they would talk."

This is actually not the first time Sesame Street music has been allegedly used this way. There were also reports that it was used on Iraqi POWs in 2003.

What Song Did Big Bird Perform at Jim Henson's Memorial?

When Jim Henson died, his life was celebrated by the many people he touched in a service open to the public. Said Henson before he died, "I'm not at all afraid of the thought of death and look forward to it. It would be lovely if there were a song or two ... and someone said some nice happy words about me." He got plenty of kind words and yes, even a song or two. Big Bird sang "It's Not Easy Being Green." Sure it would have made more sense coming from Kermit or, at least, anyone else who was green, but maybe it's fitting. Sesame Street has always stood for a lot of things, including empathy and love for others different from yourself.

Answer: George Washington was afflicted with dental troubles his entire adult life. Despite all his attempts to save his remaining teeth, Washington was down to just one tooth at the time of his inauguration as the first President of the United States. The remaining tooth was finally pulled by Dr. John Greenwood in 1796 and Washington allowed his dentist to retain this famous tooth as a memento. Greenwood eventually had the tooth inserted into a glass display that he hung from his watch chain.
