Hippopotamus Giraffe Chimpanzee Brown Bear Giraffe Answer: At a resting pressure of approximately 260 mm systolic and 160 mm diastolic, the blood pressure of a giraffe is the highest of all animals. The giraffe's blood pressure is even higher than humans because the giraffe's heart has to pump blood up a neck seven feet long to reach his brain. The giraffe is the tallest mammal in the world, with even new-born babies being taller than most humans. Giraffes spend most of their lives standing up; they even sleep and give birth standing up. Giraffes only spend between 10 minutes and two hours asleep per day. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Down at Cape Canaveral, while competing with several other future astronauts for spots on these trips into space, Shepard developed a reputation for his night-time antics. Something fellow future-American-hero John Glenn took offense to. One day, Glenn tore into Shepard in front of the team. As Tom Wolfe wrote in his book The Right Stuff, Glenn told him "the playing around with girls, the cookies, had gotten out of hand. He knew, and they knew, that it could blow up into something very unfortunate. They were all squarely in the public eye. They had the opportunity of a lifetime, and he was sorry but he just wasn't going to stand by and let other people compromise the whole thing because they couldn't keep their pants zipped." But for all of Shepard's proclivities, NASA still felt he was the man for their historic mission. On 11/18/2016 at 5:58 PM, phkrause said: What Did Shepard Do after Roughly Four Hours of Waiting for Liftoff? Being an astronaut would be pretty cool, but there is one part of it worth being afraid of. No, we're not talking about all the dangers that come with going into space, we're talking about what happens when you put on that fancy suit, strap into the ship, are waiting for liftoff and suddenly realize ... you have to go to the bathroom. That's what happened to Alan Sheppard at around the four-hour mark of waiting for his famous flight to take off. But mission control was trying to put the first man in space. They weren't going to shut down the whole operation so the guy could use the facilities. They told him he could either hold it in or he could let it go. So he did the latter. Into his suit. On 11/18/2016 at 5:58 PM, phkrause said: How Did Medical Problems Possibly Save Shepard's Life? Shepard was unfortunately disqualified from a number of subsequent missions after he developed Meniere's disease. The symptoms of the disease made space flight far too dangerous. However, the disease may have saved his life. It most likely kept him off of Apollo 1, a mission which met with tragedy when a cabin fire during training ultimately killed all three astronauts on board. Eventually, surgery enabled him to return to work and eventually fly on board the moon-bound Apollo 14 ... On 11/18/2016 at 5:58 PM, phkrause said: What Is Shepard Arguably Most Remembered for Doing on Apollo 14? When Alan Shepard got to the moon, he collected some samples, he went exploring, and blah blah blah. Frankly, what he's probably most remembered for is what happened next: He took out a golf club and golf ball, then took advantage of the moon's week gravitational pull to launch a drive space. Shepard claimed the ball went on for miles and miles which, even on the moon, seems a bit unlikely. But a physicist did some math and said it seems quite likely that the ball traveled over a mile. That would dwarf the earth-bound record for longest drive held by Mike Austin's 515-yarder. But so it goes. Mike Austin was just a professional golfer. This guy was Alan Shepard. Lemonade Coffee Vodka Beer Personally I don't think its lemonade or Coffee! I'll guess Beer!! Answer: Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the greatest composers of all time, was also apparently a coffee enthusiast. So much so that he wrote an opera about coffee. The Coffee Cantata is about a young woman named Aria who loves coffee. Her killjoy father is dead set against his daughter having any kind of caffeinated fun, so he tries to ban her from the drink. Eventually Aria and her father reconcile when he agrees to have a guaranteed three cups of coffee a day written into her marriage contract. The story concludes with them singing the moral: that drinking coffee is natural. The Gettysburg Address was delivered by Lincoln during the American Civil War, on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, four and a half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg. Members phkrause Posted November 20, 2016 Author Members Posted November 20, 2016 15 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Wrote the Speech for Lincoln? Today, whenever a president gives a speech, you know that it has been written by a professional speechwriter - someone who actually studied the art of public speaking and knows the mechanics of delivering a great speech. But in 1863, things were done a little differently. It was, in fact, Abraham Lincoln himself who wrote the Gettysburg Address - every word of it. He finished the speech the night before he gave it and spoke from the heart. That's why it is still so powerful today. 15 hours ago, phkrause said: True or False: Lincoln was the Main Speaker at the Event? Absolutely false. Abraham Lincoln was only supposed to make a few remarks. He was just a side act for the renowned orator Edward Everett. Everett's speech came in at a whopping 13,607 words and it took him two hours to deliver. Lincoln's remarks were short, concise and to the point - and most importantly, conveyed an important message that is still heard decades later. 15 hours ago, phkrause said: What Newspaper Retracted the Poor Review it originally gave the Gettysburg Address 150 Years Later? At the time, newspapers made no bones about which side they supported. The Patriot-Union, a Pennsylvania newspaper, dismissed the president's remarks as "silly" and wrote, "For the credit of the nation, we are willing that the veil of oblivion shall be dropped over them and that there shall be no more repeated or thought of." At the 150 year anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, in 2013, the same newspaper, now known as the Patriot-News of Harrisburg, issued a retraction which read, "Seven score and ten years ago, the forefathers of this media institution brought forth to his audience a judgment so flawed, so tainted by hubris, so lacking in the perspective history would bring that it cannot remain unaddressed in our archives." 16 hours ago, phkrause said: True or False: The Gettysburg Address is Preserved Exactly as Lincoln delivered it? The Gettysburg Address is very different today than how it was originally delivered. This was due to the fact that there were no recording devices present and newspapers had to transcribe the speech as quickly as they could. Even Lincoln couldn't remember exactly what he said, as he wrote five different copies of the speech for friends and associates, and each one was a little different. Cameron Diaz Pitbull Gloria Estefan Desi Arnaz Desi Arnaz Answer: Desi Arnaz is best remembered for his role as Ricky Ricardo on the television series I Love Lucy, starring with Lucille Ball, to whom he was married at the time. Born in Santiago, Cuba, in 1917, Arnaz came from a distinguished family. His father was Santiago's youngest mayor and also served in the Cuban House of Representatives. The queen of Spain had appointed his great-grandfather the mayor of Santiago. Before that she had given his great-great grandfather Don Manuel I and his wife, Ventura, large parts of Southern California. (Ventura Boulevard and Arnaz Drive are named in their memory.) His maternal grandfather was one of the founder of Bacardi Rum. His paternal grandfather was the doctor assigned to Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders after their ride up San Juan Hill. Only one other breed of dog has an entirely blue tongue -- the Shar-Pei. Chow chows are an ancient breed, possibly one of the oldest in the world. They're known for their thick fur and cuddly, bearlike appearance, as well as for their blue tongues. If we're being honest, we use our Windows computers 30% of the time to do work and 70% of the time to play solitaire, hearts, FreeCell or Minesweeper. (But we don't play Spider Solitaire anymore. That game is the work of the devil.) But once upon a time, the games weren't included because they were fun, rather they were included to train us all on how to use a new operating system. Solitaire was meant to teach us how to use the drag-and-drop functionality of Windows. Minesweeper came out two years later to get people comfortable with right and left clicking. Hearts came out next to get us excited about the networking capabilities of our new computers and FreeCell was meant to test whether the software on your computer allowing you to play 32-bit games on a 16-bit processor had properly installed. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Windows 95 Came Out With a User Video Guide Starring Actors from What TV Show That Premiered the Previous Year? Trying to get people excited for Windows 95, Microsoft released a "cybersitcom" explaining how you can use Windows. And if you had Bill Gates money, and could have anyone star in your sitcom-themed video in 1995, who would you hire? Simple. Rachel Green and Chandler Bing. Jennifer Anniston and Matthew Perry became the stars of a roughly hour-long training video/infomercial for Windows 95. Judging by the final product, we're guessing the writers from Friends were unavailable to work on this script. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: How Much Did Microsoft Pay Brian Eno to Compose a Few Seconds of Music for Windows 95? Do you remember this music that played every time you started Windows 95? Okay, neither do we. But we're guessing it must have been pretty exciting in the 90s. Microsoft paid Brian Eno $35,000 to compose that diddy. Considering how short it is, we feel that's quite a rate. But considering that this is for one of the most famous pieces of software of all time, it feels like a steal.
