Shop.org

Answer: The term "Cyber Monday" was invented by Shop.org, part of the U.S. trade association National Retail Federation. The term made its debut on November 28, 2005 in a Shop.org press release entitled "'Cyber Monday' Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year. According to Scott Silverman, the head of Shop.org, the term was coined based on research showing that 78% of online retailers reported a significant increase in sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving in 2004.

Contrary to Popular Belief, Ferdinand Magellan Was Not the First Man to ________.

If reading this blog has taught you anything, we hope it's that virtually no one did what it is we were taught they did in school. And Ferdinand Magellan is no exception. While he is often credited as being the first man to circumnavigate the globe, that, unfortunately, is not the case. It was his expedition that ultimately accomplished this feat, but Magellan died before making it all the way around the planet. So who gets the honor for actually being the first person to go full circle? Well, we're not positive.

Many give that distinction to Magellan's slave, Enrique. If Enrique was from the Philippines, which we think he was, then he would have originally arrived in Europe having come west from the Philippines. So when Magellan's ship traveled west and reached the Philippines, that would have meant Enrique had, at that point, traveled around the world once in his lifetime. A feat theretofore never accomplished. But if he wasn't from the Philippines, or if you feel that we shouldn't count lifetime journeys and rather just who made it in one trip, then that first-circumnavigation honor probably goes to Juan Sebastian Elcano whose ship was the only one from Magellan's initial fleet of five that made it all the way back to Spain, where the mission had first left from.

What Was the Initial Purpose of Magellan's Expedition?

The Treaty of Tordesillas basically split the world in half between Spain and Portugal, and it gave Portugal the eastern route to the Moluccas, an archipelago with large stores of valuable spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. So the initial purpose of Magellan's expedition was not to circumnavigate the globe, but rather to find a western route to the Moluccas for Spain.

What Country Was Magellan Originally From?

Considering that Spain was running this mission to get one up on Portugal, they probably could have chosen a less controversial explorer than Magellan, what with him being from Portugal and all. King Manuel I of Portugal was so upset when he found out one of his country's own was heading this Spanish mission, he had Magellan's family properties vandalized and may have even attempted to have Magellan assassinated. After the ships set sail, Manuel I sent two Portuguese ships after Magellan's in the hopes of capturing the explorer and bringing him back to Europe.

Magellan's nationality caused him problems with the Spanish too. Not crazy about having a Portuguese captain, Magellan's crew mutinied. Like, multiple times. The first mutiny was put down easily enough, but the second one featured three of Magellan's ships revolting. And you may recall that he only started with five. By the time there was a third mutiny brewing, Magellan marooned the men he found out were planning it. But even then, the mutinies continued. So while Magellan may not have made it all the way around the world, perhaps he should still get credit for making it as far as he did.

Answer: While Ferdinand Magellan was originally from Portugal, King Charles I of Spain ultimately sponsored his voyage. This outraged the King Manuel I of Portugal, who sent operatives to disrupt Magellan’s preparations, ordered that his family properties be vandalized and may have made an attempt to assassinate him. Once the expedition sailed, Manuel I even ordered two groups of Portuguese caravels to pursue Magellan’s fleet in the hopes of capturing the navigator and returning him to his homeland in chains.

He's So Fine

Answer: Released in November 1970, “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison was the first number one single by an ex-Beatle. A few months after its release, Harrison was sued for copyright infringement by the publisher of “He’s So Fine,” a 1963 hit for the Chiffons. The judge ruled that “it is perfectly obvious to the listener that in musical terms, the two songs are virtually identical.” In the end, Harrison was found guilty of “subconscious plagiarism” and had to pay $1,599,987 of the earnings from “My Sweet Lord” to Bright Tunes.

What Popular Beatles Songs Did Harrison Write?

Although Paul McCartney and John Lennon get the lion's share of the credit for writing most of the songs that made the Beatles an international sensation, Harrison wrote a number of songs that the band recorded and made popular. Perhaps the most successful of all of the songs written by Harrison is "Something," a song described by Beatles biographer Bob Spitz as "an intensely stirring romantic ballad that would challenge 'Yesterday' and 'Michelle' as one of the most recognizable songs they ever produced." Other numbers written by Harrison and recorded by the Beatles include "Here Comes the Sun," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Within You Without You," "Taxman," "I Want to Tell You," "Don't Bother Me," "I Need You," and "You Like Me Too Much."

In his post-Beatles years, Harrison's most famous song by far was "My Sweet Lord," the songwriter's musical offering in praise of the Hindu deity Krishna. However, in an effort to give the song as ecumenical a foundation as possible, Harrison also included references relevant to other faiths, including Christianity, Judaism, Krishna Consciousness, and Vedic Hinduism. The song has been widely interpreted as a call to put an end to religious sectarianism.

Why Was Harrison Sued Because of "My Sweet Lord"?

In early 1971, not long after the release of "My Sweet Lord" as a single and as a track on Harrison's album "All Things Must Pass," the singer-songwriter was hit with a lawsuit alleging that the song infringed on the copyright for the popular 1960s song "He's So Fine." The latter song, written by Ronnie Mack, was recorded by the Chiffons and released on the Laurie Records label in December 1962. Although Harrison testified in court that he had used the melody from "Oh Happy Day," an out-of-copyright Christian anthem, as his inspiration for "My Sweet Lord," the court eventually ruled that Harrison had committed "subconscious" plagiarism. Harrison was ordered to pay the plaintiffs a significant chunk of his royalties from "My Sweet Lord."

When Was Harrison First Diagnosed with Cancer?

A longtime smoker, Harrison in 1997 was diagnosed with throat cancer. He underwent surgery followed by a course of radiation therapy. At the end of treatment, he was said to be free of cancer. However, in May of 2001, Harrison entered the Mayo Clinic to have a cancerous growth surgically removed from one of his lungs. Again, the surgery appeared to have been a success. Only two months later, the musician underwent radiation treatment for a brain tumor at a hospital in Switzerland. He bought a house nearby in order to continue periodic treatment at the Swiss hospital, but in the final months of his life, he flew to New York for last-ditch treatments there. With his wife and son at his bedside, Harrison died of "metastatic non-small cell lung cancer" at the home of a friend in Los Angeles on November 29, 2001.

What Were Harrison's Feelings about Death?

Not long before he died, Harrison voiced his personal views about death as follows: "Death is just where your suit falls off and now you're in your other suit. You can't see it on this level, but it's all right. Don't worry." In Harrison's final days, famed Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, whom Harrison helped to popularize in the West, played soothing sitar music as his friend approached the moment of death without fear.

Answer: New York City is composed of five boroughs. They are Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. All of the boroughs were created in 1898 during consolidation, when the city's current boundaries were established. Brooklyn is the most populous of New York City's five boroughs, with a Census-estimated 2,636,735 residents in 2015. Today, if each of the five boroughs were a separate city, Brooklyn would rank as the third-most populous city in the U.S., behind Los Angeles and Chicago.

A nautical term

Answer: Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name, Mark Twain, was born on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri. At the age of twenty-one, he became a steamboat pilot. It was during his years on the river that he chose his pen name. “Mark Twain” was a nautical term and a frequent call of the leadsman. It meant that the water was 2 fathoms (12 feet) deep and indicated a safe depth for the steamboat. Clemens first signed his writing with the name in February 1863, as a newspaper reporter in Nevada.

How Did Thriller Cause a Woman Named Barbara Brown to Start Receiving a Dozen Plus Phone Calls a Day?

We're not really sure how this rumor started, but once it got going it was impossible to stop. Despite the fact that Michael Jackson is known for avoiding the spotlight, people became convinced that he had hidden his phone number in the first seven digits of Thriller album UPC code. So people started dialing it in droves. Some sticking to their own area codes, others adding a 1-800 before it, and still more using the Encino, California (Jackson's home address) code. This was unfortunate news for anyone in the country who happened to have that number, including a woman named Barbara Brown who said she was getting a dozen plus calls a day. But don't feel too bad for her. That's nothing compared to the Bellevue Hair Studio in Washington. They topped out at 50 a day.

What Film Star Made Less Than $1000 for His Work on Thriller?

Many people know that's horror legend Vincent Price narrating and laughing during the Thriller music video. Many people don't know that the guy didn't even clear $1,000 for his work. He did the voiceover in large part thanks to his friendship with Quincy Jones' wife Peggy Lipton. And so he was willing to take a small paycheck from the on-a-budget filmmakers and actually turned down a chance to partake in the profits. But we're guessing he didn't realize that the music video was about to make millions. Director John Landis said he learned a year later that Price was very upset about all the money he wasn't making off his part in this smash hit and that Michael Jackson wasn't returning Price's calls.

Quincy Jones Found an Early Version of What Song on a Used Demo Tape?

Toto bandmember David Paich was sending Quincy Jones music for Jones to potentially use on Thriller and back then, cassette was a totally reasonable way to send major music samples to a world class producer. Paich's bandmate Steve Porcaro donated a used cassette of his own music to be recorded over. Paich sent in the music to Jones who didn't like anything from Paich, but who did enjoy some of Porcaro's music which was still on the tape. Music which became the basis for "Human Nature."

What Did Jackson and Landis Do to Get the $500,000 Necessary to Make the Thriller Music Video?

Most really expensive music videos made back then cost about $100,000. Jackson and Landis wanted to make their masterpiece for $900,000. Sony understandably wasn't eager to set that kind of record, so the two sides agreed to do it for $500,000. Which only left one problem: How to come up with $500,000. So they sold the rights to a documentary about the making of the Thriller music video for $250,000 to MTV and for $300,000 to Showtime. Turns out that Thriller still would have been a bargain even at their original price tag.

Answer: On this day in 1982, Michael Jackson's "Thriller," the best-selling album of all time, was released. In 2011, the iconic red jacket worn by Michael Jackson in his Thriller video was auctioned off for $1.8 million. The candy-apple-red jacket became the "hottest outerwear fad of the mid-1980s" and has been widely emulated by stars today such as Chris Brown and Kanye West. The jacket was designed by the video's director John Landis' wife Deborah Nadoolman Landis, who had also designed Indiana Jones's jacket in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Approximately how much does the average cloud weigh?

Answer: They may look all light and fluffy, but the reality is that clouds are actually pretty heavy. Researchers have calculated that the average cumulus cloud - which is that nice, white fluffy kind you see on a sunny day - weighs an incredible 1.1 million pounds! This means that at any given moment, there are millions of pounds of water floating above your head. That’s the equivalent of 100 elephants. So, how does that much weight stay afloat? For one thing, the weight is spread out into millions of droplets over a really big space. Some of the droplets are so small that you would need a million of them to make a single raindrop.

Who Were the Presidential Candidates in 1824?

The four candidates for the presidency that year were John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, William H. Crawford, and Andrew Jackson. All four were members of the Democratic-Republican Party, which had been formed in the 1790s by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The two Virginia-born statesmen formed the party to counter the policies of the Federalist Party, which favored vesting most political power in the central government. However, in 1824 the Democratic-Republican Party failed to agree on a single party candidate for the presidential election. Instead, the party split four ways, with various groups within the party backing different candidates. Although the party managed to hold together for another four years before disbanding in 1828, the 1824 schism essentially sounded the death knell for the party.

How Many Electoral College Votes Were Won by Each Candidate?

Of the four Democratic-Republican Party members running against one another in the 1824 presidential race, Andrew Jackson was the biggest vote-getter, carrying 12 of 24 states and amassing a total of 99 electoral votes. In second place was John Quincy Adams who carried seven states and a total of 84 electoral votes. In third and fourth place, respectively, were Crawford and Clay. Although Crawford won only two states, those states carried with them a total of 41 electoral votes. Clay won three states, but his 37 electoral votes put him in last place.

How Did the Candidates Fare in Terms of the Popular Vote?

Prior to the presidential election of 1824, little, if any, attention was paid to the popular vote, because it was the Electoral College vote that determined the outcome of every presidential election as it is today. However, in 1824, popular vote totals were officially recorded for the first time. Winning half of the states in the Union, Jackson got 153,544 popular votes, followed by Adams, who got 108,740. Clay placed third with a total of 47,531, followed by Crawford with 40,856 popular votes.

Which Candidate Did the House Select as President?

The election was the only one in history to be decided by the House of Representatives under the provisions of the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution after no candidate secured a majority of the electoral vote. Under the provisions of the 12th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. House of Representatives must decide among the top three candidates for president if none of the candidates has won a majority of the Electoral College votes. Representative Henry Clay, who was disqualified from the House vote as a fourth-place candidate, agreed to use his influence to have John Quincy Adams elected. Having won half of the 24 states in a four-way contest for the presidency, Jackson seemed the logical candidate to be awarded the prize. Thanks to Clay’s backing, on February 9, 1825, the House elected Adams as president of the United States.  This presidential election was also the only one in which the candidate receiving the most electoral votes did not become president.
