Dr. Shane Posted July 21, 2017 Author Posted July 21, 2017 The church teaches that pork is unclean. I don't disagree with that. The church teaches that we should avoid eating unclean meats for health reasons. I do not disagree with that. I have no issue with what the church is teaching. The issue I raise is how members use the church's teaching and, in some cases, judge other members. There are many Adventists that eat Jell-O knowing that it likely has pig collagen in it. So what is the difference between eating Jell-O and beans with lard? GayatfootofCross 1 Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Administrators debbym Posted July 22, 2017 Administrators Posted July 22, 2017 i remember the strange conversation i heard at church when a member distressfully said they sinned because they ate oriental top ramen and later they discovered it had natural shrimp flavor... with actual shrimp particles.... sigh Gail and GayatfootofCross 2 Quote deb Love awakens love. Administrators Gail Posted July 22, 2017 Administrators Posted July 22, 2017 We need to remember: Quote Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Is your faith in the same proportion to that of this verse? Are we focused on the kingdom of God, or what is our focus? What kind of idea do people get of us when our message is not of the kingdom of God? I think the ability to set my mind on the kingdom of God is greatly reduced when I'm lying ill in bed as a result of any behavior that was a large contributing factor to the illness. I don't think the God Who is Love, ever expects us to follow lifestyles that make life more difficult for us. …29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” ....Matthew 11 38 Simple Food Swaps That Could Change Your Life http://www.womenshealthmag.com/food/healthy-food-swaps?internal_recirc=right_arrow God is Love!~Jesus saves! Dr. Shane Posted July 22, 2017 Author Posted July 22, 2017 I don't think it is a small minority of members impacted by this. I remember when my kids came home from school one day (an Adventist school) with the bad news that we couldn't eat Jell-O anymore. That didn't bother them too much until the teacher at school told them no more Gummie-bears. In the Southwestern US, rice and beans are staples in the diet of much of the population and even moreso among Adventists. Over 50% of the restaurants use lard in their beans. That creates a real issue, especially for vegetarians. Meat eaters can simply eat chicken or beef and avoid the beans. For vegetarians, beans tends to be one of our major staples. So this is a real issue for people to understand. Many Adventists believe that eating pork is a sin just like it was during ancient Israel. That simply is not the case. During ancient Israel, eating pork made a person ceremonially unclean. Those laws were done away with. Pork is still unclean but our reason for avoiding it is not the same as it was for ancient Israel. We avoid it for health reasons not for ceremonial reasons. Our biggest concern regarding Gummie-bears should be the sugar content, not the collagen. CoAspen 1 Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Rahab Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 eating right won't save you keeping the Sabbath won't save you doing good things won't save you...etc. etc. etc. Taking each individual point won't save you but think of it this way... it is the whole matter that counts. Not just being healthy, and having a healthy clear mind, and a worthy vessel for the Holy Spirit to dwell within. Not just the Sabbath but all the other commandments as well.. you break one, you break them all. Doing good works won't save you, but you won't make it unless you do good works. That means, with the right motive of the heart. Keep in mind, It is the WHOLE that matters... Jesus did it all. In every sense He fulfilled everything as a lesson to us all. We are now to prove to the world that we can also fulfill everything that He did because we can come in through Him. Every provision has been met on His part. Now it is up to us... lard? not for me thank you phkrause 1 Quote
Dr. Shane Posted October 14, 2017 Author Posted October 14, 2017 We just finished studying the book of Galatians in Sabbath School and now we are studying the book of Romans. While the clean and unclean meat distinction was made to Noah, it is part of the law of Moses. The law of Moses had civil laws, health laws and ceremonial laws. Eating unclean meats was not forbidden in the Ten Commandment law - the law kept inside the ark of the covenant. The distinction of clean and unclean meats is still valid today, as are other health laws in the law of Moses. The Deuteronomy 23:13 is also part of the health laws. It tells us to carry a shovel with us so we can bury our excrement after we go. Of course, in most parts of the world today we have toilets and running water. However consider being in a situation where you have no toilet, running water or shovel. Would it be a sin to relive yourself and not bury it? It would be like eating pork. It would be a violation of one of the health laws. But we are no longer under those laws anymore. We should still follow them as much as possible. Our health depends on it. That becomes more and more clear to me as I study this theme in our Sabbath School lesson. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
