Moderators Bravus Posted May 6, 2006 Moderators Posted May 6, 2006 See, you just have to stop eating the leaves... 'A couple houses' is very much a North American usage that doesn't happen elsewhere in the English speaking world, and if it's been accepted it's on the 'usage is king' basis, but it still sounds sloppy to me. You wouldn't say 'A pair houses', would you? Quote Truth is important
Moderators Bravus Posted May 6, 2006 Moderators Posted May 6, 2006 Speaking of 'of' (arrghh, and 'should of' instead of 'should have' is a huge pet peeve of mine!), I could do without the extra 'of' after off. 'He got it off the roof', not 'He got it off of the roof'. Quote Truth is important
Stan Posted May 6, 2006 Author Posted May 6, 2006 so saying it is a couple houses down the street, is kinda broken english? Quote If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses. https://www.paypal.me/clubadventist Administrator of a few websites like https://adventistdating.com

People who massacree text by breaking sentences into paragraphs, overload with ellipses, utilize dashes that tend to syncopation, overwork clauses, purposefully use unnecessarily arcane or archaic language, incorporate invented words, have no sense of when or when not to Capitalize, employ inconsistent spacing, favor haphazard and incorrectly placed punctuation; and enough with all the questions! already. Syntax? oh, bother. Etc. Let’s not even go there – where the issue turns upon ‘logic’ In other words, who dat we be talkin' about? Moderators LynnDel Posted May 7, 2006 Moderators Posted May 7, 2006 Funny, jasd. Nico, celery does serve a purpose (not to negate your peeve) - I understand it's the only negative calorie food. Celery takes more calories to consume and digest than it contains, so I've been told. And for those not worried about calories, celery serves as a handy carrier for calorie-laden goodies such as peanut butter, cream cheese, and peanut-butter-and-cream-cheese. I am thinking of trying either or both of those, mixed with chocolate syrup, on celery - what do you think? Naw, new peeve. Or should I say gnaw? LD Quote LD

Parade Orange Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Nico! I totally agree about the cell phone! I work in a large truck stop and as maintenance we get the fun job of security too. I hate that! People do what they want when they want here. They park in the fire zone and the handicap! they block access to the propane and the fuel islands. they must read a map at the entrance of our plaza and block the entrance! All day every day acting like brainless boorish idiots. So I get the wonderful task of telling these wonderful paying customers they cant smoke by the gas pumps and to clean up after their dogs(dont have to do that now- Thank GOD). They feel like its their right cause they are paying customers and been doing it for YEARS! and 99% are offended that I(the peon)dare to approach them on this subject that is very embarrasing. They think its cause im lazy and dont want to clean up after them. It gets heated and they threaten to tell the manager and make me out as the bad guy for saying something. So we eat poo now. but I digress. this is about cell phones. Soeone was parked illigally and I had to tell him to move his truck. and I gently tapped on the window and he rolled it down while on his cell phone. And Told me 'Im on the phone!' then rolled his window back up and proceded to talk more to his phone. Well that was very upsetting. Apparently when u are doing something illegal and security or police come to u and address the activity just be on your cell phone and they or me will bow and tip our hats and say' oh sorry, how rude of me!' Is that what this guy thinks? No wonder this world is going to hell. If I was God(im glad and your glad im not) I would fold this fellow like a bowling ball and knock him into the gutter of hades while he is still talking on the phone. 'Im on the phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' means 'talk to the hand! the world is on the phone while you wait on them in the doctors and the store. I was taught not to interrupt people on the phone. So when they are on the phone and ask me a question or need service I just smile and wait till they get off the phone. I will make them late! Parade Orange Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 BTW that comment about folding the fellow and throwing him to the gutter to hell is not to be taken litteraly. I dont wish anyone hell( what about the ones that did evil to others and had already died without GOD? but thats another topic) I was being satirically dramatic like NICO and I hate confronting lot lizards and acting like they are unwelcome here and my female bosses judge them and think evil of them. Administrators Gail Posted May 11, 2006 Administrators Posted May 11, 2006 Here's one: Long hair on the "U" shape of hair that's left on a bald guy. I don't mean the comb-over, although that's pretty bad, too I mean where a guy has nothing on top and a bit all around the sides, and he lets that grow out shoulder-length Gag me with a spoon Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Michelle Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 Hi Clayton, I have gotten Weetabix here and have often thought of Ruskets when I was eating them. Can you get Weetabix in the US? There are several different variations, including the ones from Australia and the ones from GBR, but they're all very similar to what I remember--except they seem to "fall apart" pretty quickly in the milk. Oh, well, my kids love them and I eat them once in a while. M Quote
