The 1844 Sanctuary Prophecy & Public Revelation

I have found nothing in my study that indicates that the average Hebrew/Israelite/Jew viewed the sanctuary and its operation as pointing forward to Christ and his sacrifice for their sins.

If the average Hebrew did not understand the purpose of the Sanctuary, then it was a wasted effort. How would they separate their religion from those of the nations around them other than they weren't supposed to offer up their children into the fire?

Do keep in mind that a Savior was promised from the day of the first sin and in multiple other events including the lesson Abraham received when he was instructed to offer up Isaac as a sacrifice. I think you do not give the average Hebrew enough credit for being able to understand the purpose of the Sanctuary. Don't forget, they even heard the very voice of God shake the desert and lived with the presence of God in the piller over the Tabernacle for 40 years. That was plenty of time to discuss the issue especially when you consider that the earthly leader Moses spent time in the cloud speaking to God face to face. You think Moses kept it all to himself?

Hebrew religion/salvation hinged on the law and the sanctuary, as opposed to "saved by grace" illustrated by the meaning and symbolism of the sanctuary.

I don't think anyone's salvation is different from anyone else. Everyone has always been saved by grace and the law is no less important today as it was for all of earth's history. Sometimes people talk like grace was invented in the New Testament period!

This is a good reason to spend time in group Bible study! You should be comparing what you discover in your personal reading/studying with what others find,

Oh we do!  At our Church, we are going through the Bible one chapter every Sabbath; and REALLY dig in.  One of our missions in this endeavor is to see Jesus in every chapter.  Sometimes it's not easy; but if you dig enough, He is always there.

We receive the descriptions of the sacrificial system, but I suspect that the people did discuss meaning and knew well what the significance of the Sanctuary service was. I really do not think God really wanted them following blindly a series of services that they had no comprehension of.

In an ideal situation, I agree with you.  But the fact is that they never figured it out.  I was talking to a very devout religious orthodox Jew; and His take was that they Jews were simply following the commands in the Torah.  He told me that in general, religious Jews simply follow the Law and traditions without asking why (unless the feast requires questions, like at Passover).  He told me that non-Messianic Jews are not that big on prophecy.

BTW, His death on the cross does not save us!  "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life." Romans 5:10 I would submit that that saving life comes thru the Sanctuary services.

THAT is one of the main takeaways of the Sanctuary Message to me!

I wouldn't think they never figured it out. If that is true, how did Isaiah write the 53rd chapter of his book? I have listened to sermons by Rabbis and in one sermon the Rabbi did an astonishingly good job of explaining how Christianity is different from Judaism. And he was very good in his explanation of Christianity. But he was still a follower of Judaism.

Now your take on the one who says they simply follow commands makes me a bit skeptical. Following without asking is something many people do across all religions. Many Jews spend a lot of time in Torah, and the rest of the Tanach, and the Talmud.

You will have to expand on that one for me. Why did Jesus die if he didn't have to?

He did not have to, He chose to. Our sins demanded that we die. He took our place.

By reconciled, He paid the penalty for our sins, but we are still sinful creatures.

"He saves us by His life" by changing us into His likeness. The New Testament uses words like "transformed."

Isaiah figured it out, as did Job, Moses, David, and a few others.  You saw how Israel reacted to Isaiah.  Didn't they stuff him on a log and saw him in half?  A few dedicated individuals figured it out; but as a people group, they never did; and still haven't ( or else they would already accept Jesus as Messiah).

Isn't it the same with many Christians today?  Many of us believe what is spoon fed to us from the pulpit or our publications without going to the Word to see if it is true; or diving deeper.  For example, for how many Christians will the end times come as a total shock and surprise?  My opinion is most.  Why? Because Daniel and Revelation are either too scary or too confusing to try to figure out.  I LOVE studying prophecy; but have I figured it all out yet? Absolutely not.  I pray for the HS to guide me through so I at least recognize the preliminary signs of His imminent return when they appear.  That will be when the true sanctuary message is both revealed, fully appreciated, and fulfilled.

The whole "plan of salvation" and the elaborate sanctuary services here under discussion all center on the death of Jesus on the cross, so I'm really not following that statement.

IMO it is a package deal. One cannot separate his birth from his life or his death or his resurrection. Its all one, the central event being his premature and violent death on the cross. His blood for ours. (Which is a whole 'nuther topic)

Eph 1:7 "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace"

So, IMO, humanity is saved by the death of Jesus on the cross, and Yes, he had to do it.

I was interested in your comment, as it is almost an echo of a comment that I once heard, but in a slightly different context. I disagree with the part “Jesus did not have to die”, as I believe that even though Jesus had not sinned, he was still a descendant of Adam and thus partook of flesh and blood and was mortal, subject to the death imposed on Adam. Jesus acknowledged his relationship with this by voluntarily dying. Thus I would prefer “Jesus had to die, and he chose to die”.

His voluntary death is not substitution, as we still die. He represented us and interceded on our behalf, and as a result our sins are forgiven.

Gustave: Let me again make it very clear that YAHSHUA did not keep Hanukkah. This is false. Just because John mentions the Hebrew celebration, he was explaining that YAHSHUA was at Solomon porch in the Temple. Nothing was mention that YAHSHUA celebrated the eight-days dedication that the Hebrews observed. Matter of fact, John proceeds to state that the Hebrews surrounded HIM, demanding that HE tell them that HE was THE MESSIAH. I could write a letter and say I was in China Town in Atlanta during the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. I was there shopping, that does not mean I was participating in the festival.

I understand, that the 1844 prophecies will come under discrepancies. It is because humans feel that those who accept certain part of an event to be true, and it is not, that all of it is error. Well, that is why clear minded educated people today don’t believe that men went to the moon and that the earth is flat AGAIN!

All of us forget that the Protestants left the Catholic Church because she felt that she could not make an error. Different denominations started because once again they made the same complaint that the church they were attending would not accept that it made errors and the cycle goes on and on! All denominations, including the Catholic Church, has some truth, but the problem is they hold on to the errors refusing to let it go.

The Millerite Movement did not start in trying to separate anyone from their church. He preached in all of the different churches. It was the leaders that begin to go against his preaching. William Miller first calculation of YAHSHUA’S Advent was wrong. He was beginning to understand the 23 hundred day prophecies and he made the first wrong prediction base on the Rabbinic Calendar.

"My principles in brief, are, that Jesus Christ will come again to this earth, cleanse, purify, and take possession of the same, with all the saints, sometime between March 21, 1843, and March 21, 1844." William Miller and the Advent Crisis, by Everett N Dick-p. 96–97

As the time begins to pass, a new individual brought in again truth mix with error:

Samuel Snow assisted Miller and brought this expectation to logic, that Jesus would not only fulfill the autumn type of the Day of Atonement in the year of the 2300 day prophecy but on the actual DATE of the Day of Atonement.

In 1844, according to the extremely careful reckoning of the Karaites Jews, the tenth day of the seventh ancient Jewish month, the Day of Atonement, was to fall on October 22nd.  This was based on the ancient Jewish calendar and revealed by Samuel S. Snow.  These Jews were the most careful and known for preserving the Bible calendar.  And that was where they got the date, October 22, 1844. Truthseeker Ministries

The Karaites claimed their sect began during the time of YAHSHUA around the 1rst and 2nd Century. It has been recorded that four sects were disputing during this time, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Essenes, and the Zealots. The Pharisees had grown to be the largest and most powerful movement that started the Talmudic tradition. It is believed that the Karaites possibly was formed from two sects the Sadducees, and the Essenes. However, there are no actual historical records to indicate this, but it is base on their belief. Both the Sadducees and the Essenes were totally against the Pharisees Talmud or Oral law belief. The Karaites totally disagreed with the Rabbinic Judaic belief of accepting the Talmud and the other writings of the Rabbis above the Torah. They Karaites also disagreed with the Rabbinic Calendar, which did not follow Ex. Chapter 12 or Leviticus Chapter 23. The Rabbinic Calendar lean to pagan customs and beliefs and did not even follow the principle layout in the chronology of the Four Gospel books of the New Testament. Soon they begin to easily coincide with the Western world and beliefs. The Karaites also do not accept Rosh Hashanah as the beginning of the year. They keep the “sacred assembly,” according to the Bible and they also did not keep Hanukkah because it was a man-made law. Which again this proves that YAHSHUA did not keep this celebration because HE only kept HIS FATHER’S Commandments.

William Miller was already studying the Karaites Calendar versus the Rabbinical Calendar:

Now there is a dispute between the Rabbinical, and the Caraite Jews, as to the correct time of commencing the year. . . . The Caraite Jews on the contrary, still adhere to the letter of the Mosaic, and commence with the new moon nearest the barley harvest in Judea; and which is one moon later than the Rabbinical year. The Jewish year of AD 1843, as the Caraites reckon it in accordance with the Mosaic law, therefore commenced this year with the new moon on the 29th of April, and the Jewish year 1844, will commence with the new moon in next April, when 1843 and the 2300 days, according to their computation, will expire. Signs of the Times; June 21, 1843; p. 123

In conclusion, what was believed about the Day of Atonement is something that has to be deeply studied. It was the only day that was called the people’s sabbath. It was a day of serious repentance of sin and the Millerites was lead to observe this day exactly according to the Bible. Did they truly understand all of it, no they did not! To be honest, SDA does not understand it fully themselves even today! If they did they would be more serious about Daniel and Revelation that points back to Ex Chapter 12 and Lev Chapter 23. The Investigated Judgment is in the Bible in Rev Chapter 4&5. EGW warned SDA that they did not understand in-depth the seriousness of the Investigated Judgment or the Day of Atonement, which is found in Revelation Chapter 6! The Bible says my people are lost because they lack understanding and knowledge of HIS Law and it was YAHWEH who said; “These are MY Appointed Set Time.” Lev 23:2; Gen 1:14! The word was changed to feast. I challenge anybody to show me that YAHWEH called these days Israel, the Hebrews, or the Jews Appointed Set Time or did HE ever used the word feast! Then take time to study The Day of Atonement, then you will understand the Investigated Judgment!

 Blessings!

It depends on how one looks at it.  Yes, Jesus had to die in order to save us.  No other being in the universe had the qualifications.  The death of any other being would have been insufficient.

No Jesus didn't have to die.  He and the Father could have just let us perish in the filth of our own sin.  But - out of love for us - Jesus voluntarily laid down His life so that we who believe would share everlasting life with Him in the Kingdom.  "God so loved the world ...."

In a previous post, I used the word "hagiography" to describe certain writings of people who wrote about Ellen White.  The Wanderer commented that he had never heard that word used before in any connection to Ellen White.

Hagiography is when others write about someone as perfect or much better than they really are. Ellen White was a human being who stated herself that she was fallible. I will confirm that her visions did come from THE MOST HIGH and the proof is they all are in the Bible! My suggesting is just to take the Bible to be your rule of faith and allow THE HOLY SPIRIT to guide you into all truth!

That "authoratative statement" really does not have enough info to stand up. We have a confusion of two terms - "keep" & "celebrate". If you consider that most all of the other Sabbaths and religious days were ordained by God Himself in the Torah, one, including Jesus Himself, would "keep" them.

However, Chanukah is a different situation and one would not "keep" the holiday, they would "celebrate" the holiday. I would not want to say Jesus was so lacking in humor or a desire to participate in the cultural life of Israel that He would play "party pooper" and refuse to celebrate a holiday that commemorated a miracle for the children of Israel.  To keep the light going for eight days on a scant bit of oil was equal to the miracle of the oil the woman who looked after Elijah experienced. And who would have provided that oil? Perhaps He even walked in the Temple porches at Chanukah because that was one more teaching opportunity to reach the people and show them how God watches over and cares for them. That was what He specialized in, showing the love of God.

One thing to keep in mind is that, according to people I have talked with, Chanukah in Israel is a minor holiday and some believe it has reached it's popularity in western civilization as an alternative to Christmas for Jewish children. How many ever hear of the holiday Tisha B'Av? Most non-Jews have probably never heard of that day of remembering. Or how many non-Jews have ever heard of Succot, a day which is commanded in the Torah to be kept?

https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/144575/jewish/What-Is-Tisha-BAv.htm

When my kids were little, Chanukah was a very happy time for them. The music of Chanukah is also especially beautiful. Ah! for the dreidels, latkes, and the gelt along with the stories!

While it may be distant in history today, in Jesus's time, it was a relatively recent experience in the national memory. One must be careful of making pronouncements of what the Bible says when it doesn't say it. I see nothing that says Jesus would not have been part of Chanukah celebrations, whatever they were, with His friends and family.

Matthew 23, 2: Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples,  saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you [a]to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.  For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

The Scribes & Pharisees observed Hanukkah, even the Sadducees observed it. The only sect of Judaism that didn't observe the Festival of Lights were the Sarmatian's - but given they thought Daniel was a heretic and Samuel was an imposter it's hardly shocking to find out the Samaritan's believed the Jerusalem Temple and it's services were invalid.

I"m unclear as to what you're saying here?

Jesus heals a man full of leprosy and tells him to go to a Priest and offer the sacrifice that Moses told him to offer. Where did Priests conduct their Liturgical Services at that time?

The Samaritans were not a sect of Judaism. They were a mixed blood group from leftovers of the ten tribes who were taken captive and other people sent to occupy the land. They also had a mixed religion with some parts of the Jewish religion and parts of heathen religion. They considered Mount Gerazim to be the true place for the temple. They accepted the Torah but not the rest of the Old Testament (Tanach).

B/W Photodude,

I hear what you're saying here - I'm suggesting that Scripture strongly records that Jesus was a "regular Jew" in that He clearly didn't agree with the Sadducees or the Samaritan's. As such He would have participated in ritual celebrations ordained by the Scribes and Pharisees.

I just checked and see that while they accept Joshua they don't include it in their Canon ( which is as you said, only the 1st 5 Books ). I stand corrected on that part.

Well, everyone has their opinions, but according to Jewish law, one must be able to claim descent thru Jewish mothers. A child of a Jewish man and a gentile mother was not a Jew. So, a daughter of a Jewish man and gentile mother was not a Jew and her children would not be Jews. A Samaritan would need to trace back thru the mothers only to rightfully claim to be a Jew.

The children of Jewish men not being Jews is a subject of contention today in some quarters.

Yes, and I stand by what I stated. John just mentions the day, but more important is what happen. The Pharisees were not interested in their own man-made day! They were more concern with YAHSHUA and demanding HIM to tell them that HE was THE MESSIAH! They were caught up about HIM, instead of keeping their own dedication. It showed they were not really interested in giving praise to YAHWEH! Go back and read, how the candles were supposed to be lit, with what fire?

The terms "sect" and "cult" have specialized meanings that are sometimes used by scholars, and may not be commonly understood.

In this specialized sense, some might call the Samaritans a sect of Judaism and others might call them a cult of Judaism.

Pastor Gregory: If you don't mind this is what I can say about it according to the Bible.

And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not YAHWEH: therefore YAHWEH sent lions among them, which slew some of them. Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the right-ruling of the of THE ELOHIYM of the land: therefore HE hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the the right-ruling of the of THE ELOHIYM of the land. Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of THE ELOHIYM of the land. Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear YAHWEH. King 17:24-28

So these nations feared YAHWEH and served their graven images, both their children and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day. 2Ki 17:41

YAHSHUA first went to Israel, then Samaria and had HIS disciples to do the same thing in that order and then to the Greeks and the rest of the world.

 Blessings!
