Moderators Bravus Posted October 30, 2006 Moderators Posted October 30, 2006 I'm with coniuge on this one: as someone else noted above, there are wide variations between individuals within each sex: sufficiently wide that the sex category is not really all that useful as a way of characterising behaviour. Simpler just to take each individual - and for that matter each post - on its merits, IMO. Quote Truth is important

Moderators LynnDel Posted October 31, 2006 Moderators Posted October 31, 2006 I'm with the men on shopping -- window shopping is tedious for me, unless I'm doing it for a social get together with a friend. However, when I am shopping for something big, furniture for example, I shop it to death, finding all the possibilities before I make my final decision. That seems to drive the males in my family slightly crazy. When my Dad shops, I stay home. He will commandeer a clerk and ask every possible question about manufacture, warranty, even take apart the item in question to see if it's well made. When the clerk repeatedly answers, "I don't know," that doesn't stop the interrogation. I'd rather have a tooth pulled. So, yeah, some things may be stereotypically gender based in each personality, and some are individually based. It's fun to play with the stereotypical stuff. Quote LD

There is a definite pattern there, however, enough of one that the exceptions can stand out as different from the rest of their gender. But I think it's great that there's a variety. How dull and boring the world would be without it. I'm glad God made us so we don't all think and act the same. And how dull, too, if everyone said, "Yeah I agree" with everything anyone else said. Moderators Bravus Posted October 31, 2006 Moderators Posted October 31, 2006 'The exception proves the rule', if my non-existent Latin serves. That's an interesting one: the word 'proves' is used, not in its modern sense of 'provides supporting evidence for, establishes', but in its older sense of 'tests'. That is, it is the exceptions that *test* the rule to see if it works or not. People above have gone either way on whether the 'gender differences in posting' rule passes the test or not... aka Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Hi Cricket :LS The formula in full is "exceptio probat regulam in casibus non exceptis." [That's Latin for "The exception proves the rule in cases not excepted. [Or : If there were no rule, no exception would be needed] Cicero's defense of L. Cornelius Balbo (56 B.C.) is the earliest known citation of this logic and is sometimes cited as the origin of the phrase. Balbo was accused of having been illegally granted Roman citizenship. The prosecutor pointed out that treaties with some non-Roman peoples prohibited granting them citizenship and suggested this should be inferred in Balbo's case. Cicero replied "If the exception makes such an action unlawful, where there is no exception the action must necessarily be lawful." "the original legal sense" of the "the exception proves the rule" is as follows: "'Special leave is given for men to be out of barracks tonight till 11.0 p.m.'; 'The exception proves the rule' means that this special leave implies a rule requiring men, except when an exception is made, to be in earlier. The value of this in interpreting statutes is plain." (my thanks to the google train ride) Quote

Moderators Nan Posted November 1, 2006 Moderators Posted November 1, 2006 I'm so 'laid back' at times i even wait for stop signs to change when i'm out driving. That does not sound good ! A work colleague once told me that if I were any more laid back I would be horizontal. And as regards driving, my sons have told me that I could get lost going through a roundabout! I had not heard about waiting for the signs to change though, so maybe there is some hope. But I am not sure if this is a sign of gender difference or advancing years. Quote

Gotta tell you guys, I think it's a sign of age, not gender. Just last evening my daughter just asked what happened to her Type A Mom ... as I was driving down the street 15 miles below the speed limit.
