Woody Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 American Citizens are Discriminated against by Bank of America. If you are an Illegal Immigrant you can get a credit card without a Social Security Card or a Drivers License. BUT ... If you are an American Citizen ... you get treated differently. If you don't have a drivers license or a Social Security Card ... then you don't get a credit card. Illegal Immigrants can get a drivers license if they want. But, Bank of America does not require it ... unless you are a citizen. Is this discrimination or what? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Moderators Bravus Posted February 15, 2007 Moderators Posted February 15, 2007 Meh, more of the privileged whinging about any perceived loss of their privileges to the underprivileged. The banks want to give people credit cards because they make massive money off them. Besides, credit cards are a curse, not a privilege... be delighted if it's hard to get one. Well, there's a "two-fer." Self-contradictory, and misses the point. Or, like most newspeak, it's simply an attempt to confuse. Newspeak principles Personally, I'm not stirred by this issue one way or the other. But I understand why law-abiding citizens don't like enticements to foreign felons. And why such law-abiding citizens resent being labeled as "whinging" and "privileged" simply because they don't want what they've worded for given away to felons. Dr. Shane Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Where I live, along the border, there are many Mexicans, living in Mexico, that have border passes which allow them to cross the border and stay for 72 hours for shopping or tourism. They do not have Texas drivers' lisiense of social security cards so I suspect these legal visitors will be delighted to take advantage of this opportunity. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Woody Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 Quote: They do not have Texas drivers' lisiense of social security cards so I suspect these legal visitors will be delighted to take advantage of this opportunity Shane ... you miss the point. If they are "legal" visitors then they have to have a social security card and or drivers license. It is ONLY if they are ILLEGALs that they can have special rights. So ... this group needs to be able to find a way to come across the border illegally to take advantage of Bank of America's special privileges. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Dr. Shane Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Quote: If they are "legal" visitors then they have to have a social security card and or drivers license. Not so. They are Mexicans coming here for tourism or shopping. Similar to an American going to Mexico or Canada. I don't have to get a social security card from Canada or Mexico to cross the border and go shopping there. Do we have any Canadians here that visit the US and don't have a US social security number? Woody Posted February 16, 2007 Author Posted February 16, 2007 Shane ... the topic is Bank of America credit cards. They require a social security card and or a drivers license for legals to get a credit card. But for Illegals they do not require this. So ... if your Mexicans are coming here to shop Legally then they would be Legals and therefore would be required to have a drivers license or social security card to get a credit card. It is ONLY ILLEGALS that are given special privileges. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Dr. Shane Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 I would have to see the exact policy but that sounds like some right-wing SPIN. I am not a top, I don't spin. The policy sounds like illegals could take advantage of it but would be also something Canadians and Mexicans that don't have a license from a US state or a US social security number could also take advantage of. And let us remember, it is not Bank of America's responsibility to secure the borders. They simply offer financial services to their clients. If they have clients or potential clients that don't have drivers' licenses or social security, there is nothing wrong with them making different rules to accommodates them. The politics of grievance and discrimination are their stock-in-trade. To the extent that it is, it does. But my particular point here was that it's a little rich, coming from middle class Americans with all their advantages, to whine about this one privilege for those who are cleaning their toilets. As Shane has noted, it's all about the bank's profits, not about (as seems to be inferred) keeping the white man down. Quote Truth is important
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 16, 2007 Members Posted February 16, 2007 Just for general interest sake, here's a news story link and some reactions from various individuals: Bank of America and the Illegal Alien Credit Card offers Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. bevin Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Let us get one thing clear A law that is not enforced is not a law. Indeed the standard joke about English law is that everything is illegal, and we just enforce the laws we actually care about. This is true about speeding laws. It is true about immigration laws. Given that the country is not enforcing the immigration laws, it is appropriate for businesses to treat illegal aliens as customers. Should doctors refuse to treat them? Should store owners refuse to serve them? ... /Bevin Quote

there buster Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Quote: to whine about this one privilege for those who are cleaning their toilets. It's either a privilege or a curse, you've tried it both ways. At the same time, you insist on mischaracterizing the issue. It's about granting felons more power to commit further crimes. The other part is quite offensive. My wife runs a cleaning business, and cleaning toilets is one of the things she does, and proudly. She never cared for clerical work, and likes the independence physical activity her job provides. And she considers herself on the cutting edge of providing a healthy environment. If you don't like the politics of victimhood, then don't use the the language of class envy. Or were you saying those who clean toilets were of the 'privileged class?' Moderators Bravus Posted February 16, 2007 Moderators Posted February 16, 2007 Last response on this one, because now you're just being deliberately obtuse. I clarified earlier in the thread that those who are whining see having a credit card as a privilege. I personally see it as a curse, due to my own experiences, but that's irrelevant for the purposes of this debate and I probably shouldn't have mentioned it in this thread. But I did clarify, so bringing it up again is being deliberately obtuse. Cleaning toilets is honorable work: I've done a lot of cleaning myself in my own life, for a living, so of course I'm not using it as any kind of slur. It's not, however, the most enjoyable of jobs, in the estimation of most people. If your wife happens to enjoy it of course that's her right. I suspect many illegal immigrants would find non-menial jobs if they could. 'toilet cleaning' was shorthand for all the menial jobs, including field work, that illegals do in the US. I could have listed them, I guess, but wanted to write something succinct. Look, you're a highly intelligent man. You understand my point. You may not agree with it, but pretending you don't understand it, rather than choosing to engage with it, is being deliberately obtuse. Quote Truth is important

Dr. Shane Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Quote: It's about granting felons more power to commit further crimes. I am not sure this is refering to illegal immirgrants however it is noteworthy that it is not a felony to enter the country illegally so those that do are not felons unless they commit a felony after entering the country. Amelia Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 Anyone can get a "secured" credit card with out most means of identification. Many of the cards are $500, some are $700. You can now also purchase Visa credit cards like gift cards at grocery stores etc. Those you can put any $ amt on, up to $700. "Secured" credit cards allow those who have trashed their credit, to rebuild it over time. They also allow those new to the country to build a credit history. I remember when I was way younger, Sears would give credit cards to anyone. I got one when I started college and began to build my good credit history. LOL I purchased a $40 stereo system and paid $5 a month til it was paid off.
