Woody Posted February 17, 2007 Author Posted February 17, 2007 Shane ... I am curious ... Why couldn't you just say that in light of Title 8 that Ed quoted ... that perhaps ... just perhaps you could be wrong. Is it that difficult for you to say that maybe you don't know everything? It might be healing for you to acknowledge that you could have been mistaken instead of just not hearing about it. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Dr. Shane Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 One of the rules here at Club Adventist has been to focus on the topic and not on other members. I don't know if those rules are still posted. However I am not the topic in this thread. I will post a link to a little reminder of the debate we had last year. GOP leaders oppose immigration felony Quote: A pledge by Republican leaders that they will not push to make illegal immigration a felony...Under the law, people who cross the border without permission are already guilty of a criminal misdemeanor. But people who enter the country legally and then overstay their visas — as many as 40% of the nation's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, according to Sensenbrenner — are guilty of a civil violation. Moderators Bravus Posted February 17, 2007 Moderators Posted February 17, 2007 Neither Shane nor Ed was wrong on fact on this point, Redwood: both felony and misdemeanor are on the statute books. It sounds as though misdemeanor has been the much more common outcome in the past but that may change. Ed used 'felons' to make his rhetorical point more strongly. It would reflect well on you to give the ragging on Shane a rest: you had one disagreement, and it's past, but every time you dig it up again you damage the chances of harmony. Shane and I have had some dingdong battles in the past, and still disagree about many, many things. But Shane is someone who is actually very *good* at admitting it when he's wrong on facts, and at considering others' viewpoints. Quote Truth is important
Woody Posted February 17, 2007 Author Posted February 17, 2007 Thank you Bravus. Your point is well taken. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Dr. Shane Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 I can be slow to see where my facts are wrong but readily admit it when I do. In my line of work, I often find myself admitting where I have misread a plan or gotten one project mixed up with another. None of us are perfect. I have a pre-paid Visa card I bought at my local grocery store but I did need my social security number in order to activate it. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... there buster Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 I have no quarrel with you, Shane. I cited the statute, which says it can be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony. You said you have no recollection of it ever being charged as a felony. There's no conflict there. I bow to your experience. Woody Posted February 18, 2007 Author Posted February 18, 2007 I would like to clarify what we are talking about here in this thread. We are talking about the policies of Bank of America when it comes to their policies of granting credit cards to illegal aliens compared to American citizens. We are not talking about buying a credit card at a grocery store. That is a topic for a different thread. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Jabberwock Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 I apologize for being late to this topic; however, having personal experience as an immigrant with this very issue (although a legal one from the northern border) I can contribute a little to the conversation: First, as has already been pointed out, there is a large class of individuals who are not citizens or LPR's yet are in the country legally (tourists, students) yet are not entitled to a SSN or DL and therefore have no credit history in the US. Creditors use your credit history in order to determine how much (if any) credit should be extended to you. If you are lucky enough to have been born in the US or obtain a green card, then the bank has every right to know how you have treated your creditors in the past by requiring your SSN or DL. BofA is simply responding to an economic demand and is assuming significant risks in aggregate by extending credit to those who essentially have no credit history. Having lived in this country as a student (legally) for a small period of time without an SSN. I can't stress enough how hard it is to obtain basic services without an SSN or DL (phone service, opening a bank account, city utilities, car insurance etc.) It was approximately 8 months after we had moved here before our local credit union granted us a credit card secured by a second mortgage on our home. (Don't even ask about how difficult it is to get the a mortgage without a US credit history or SSN). Given that I was used to running about 95% of my purchases through credit cards (paid off in full each month) it was quite an adjustment to carrying cash and not being able to purchase anything online. The hype surrounding this story is probably overblown, I have a feeling most illegals will probably not want to open a bank account and take out a credit card since this would make it easier to be tracked down by government agencies. Woody Posted February 23, 2007 Author Posted February 23, 2007 Credit card, schmedit card! A card is a card, is a card where ever you get it. You have no discrimination issue here, dude!! Perhaps THIS Dude doesn't ... but others do. I just heard on the news today that entire city counsels are pulling their business away from Bank Of America out of protest for whatever kind of issue they think this is. We are talking about millions and millions of dollars. There is even a Boycott B of A website. Apparently not every one agrees with you CoAspen. But you have an interesting viewpoint. Woody Posted February 26, 2007 Author Posted February 26, 2007 Today on FOX NEWS they interviewed a Hispanic women who is a LEGAL immigrant and is furious with Bank Of America for encouraging illegals to not go through the legal process to enter this country. She is starting an organization to combat BofA's credit card policy. Apparently it is not just Whites that are furious. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Woody Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 Today 2-28 the news reported that Suffolk County with reserves of $2.6 Billion will have a bill presented to drop Bank of America as an authroized depositor. Homeland Security Dept. has criticized the Bank's policy as encouraging ID theft, Money Laundering and illegal immigration. Ed Romaine will introduce a Bill on March 6 to punish Bank of America for accepting accounts for illegals without Social Security numbers. Again ... This does not seem to be isolated to Sean or Rush. Dr. Shane Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 And yet I have only heard about it from Sean and Rush. Oh yea, and here. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

Dr. Shane Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Well, I admit, I don't watch much secular TV. I do try to catch NewsHour with Jim Lerher and O'Reilly at least once each week. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Woody Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 Well, I admit, I don't watch much secular TV. I do try to catch NewsHour with Jim Lerher and O'Reilly at least once each week. I watch Fox News a lot during each day. I don't see much of O'Reilly but I do like him. I used to listen to Rush everyday. I found out that I was a conservative Republican through listening to Rush. But I am not sure what he has said in the last three years. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
