Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 18, 2007 Members Posted February 18, 2007 I've noticed a trend lately whereby some in-your-face, rather rude personal remarks and/or *observations* to long-time members have been posted by newer members. I think it would behoove the newer members to bide some time before donning the warbonnets and waving the hatchets. Learn a bit about the members already here before dueling. It might save some embarrassment arising from putting foot in mouth. Just imho. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Woody Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 Pam ... I think you have made a very good point. I think that one thing we should avoid is calling someone's opinion ridiculous or even wrong. I would suggest that we be tolerant and respectful of another's belief. If we have an opinion we should say ... " Have you thought of it this way" OR " Another way to look at it is ... " I think the more respect we can show towards each other the better. And above all we should avoid name calling. But I have seen it going both ways. I do not think the old members are without fault. I think ALL can learn from what you have said. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

It might save some embarrassment arising from putting foot in mouth. Just imho. You have just proven one biblical principle, Rudy, that if we have a need to be defended, Jesus will send the necessary reenforcements without our being confrontational and escalating to a position of a "holy war". It will not be long before sides are taken to forcefully stifle that which is true. You reflect the gentle spirit for which I believe we will be able congregate around to uphold Truth, while refusing to join the enemy's efforts to destroy those who have found the peace that passes understanding. "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Administrators Naomi Posted February 19, 2007 Administrators Posted February 19, 2007 There have been times when it appears that very little consideration and/or respect has been shown towards members of our community. Potential members comment on our cruel remarks and site that is the reason they do not join our Happy Little Group. We don't always see ourselves as others see us. Inconsiderate, cold, cruel remarks often set off a chain reaction. In the end no one "wins" and usually no one turly "forgets". Then I do get on my warbonnet and hatchet. :PF Quote Riverside CA

Woody Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 Is there any merit in the Biblical approach to this topic of when someone offends us? Matthew 18 spells out some guidelines. I wonder if when we notice a harsh comment that if we took it upon ourselves to approach that person in a kind but private way like a PM. I have noticed that sometimes people who know each other like the "old timers" will gather around their friends and attack back in public ... another member. Now ... I do not mean to make this an "old timers" vs. the "new" ones. But this was just one example. Another point is that I think making mistakes ... having them pointed out .... and then apologizing and making things right is a good healing and growing process for all concerned to witness. I don't claim to know the answers ... these are just a few observations. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

I must say that I am glad you are not making this an old timer vs new-timer issue. If I is I shall be seriously depressed, because I may not be the oldest of old timers but have been around quite a while. I don't recall anyone coming to my rescue ...... Woody Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 This is just what I was not wanting to make it ... a personal issue. I desired to make it a general observation and solution. If it would help ... just erase the old timer vs. new issue. I just used it as an example. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Moderators lazarus Posted February 20, 2007 Moderators Posted February 20, 2007 My advice to any newbie on CA is: 1. At the beginning, post hard and often. 2. Take no prisoners 3. Beware of people with more than 9,200 posts. Even Stan doesn't have that many! 4. The topic in question has proabably been discussed about 100 times before so "old timers" will seem informed and even sensible. Wouldn't you look good if you've discussed a topic 100 times. Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Einstein

Moderators Bravus Posted February 20, 2007 Moderators Posted February 20, 2007 I go back and forth on this one: one on hand I don't think those of us who have been around a while deserve any particular status or privileges on that basis. A n00b's opinions are just as valid. On the other hand, a forum is a community and a conversation, and in real life there are social penalties if you barge into the middle of an on-going conversation and start insulting and attacking the participants. So I guess maybe I'm saying 'don't respect us 'cos we're oldbies, respect us 'cos we're people'. And we'll try to do the same. Quote Truth is important

LifeHiscost Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 On the other hand, a forum is a community and a conversation, and in real life there are social penalties if you barge into the middle of an on-going conversation and start insulting and attacking the participants. While we can never be quite positive this might be going on in reference to our own posts, what would be very rude in real face to face conversations, becomes less so on the web forums. Deliberate ignoring of a person's input. On the web a person can never be quite sure whether their being ignored, the ultimate in disdain for another's opinions. While in face to face confrontation it is so obvious most would not stoop that low as their rudeness would be immediately obvious to all who witness. Therefore it would seem to me a better course would be to question our own motives in posting so that we are posting that which is designed to make God look good, and I can't believe that is possible while we have disdain for His fellow servants or we fail to include all of God's counsels, not just those that make us look good. "For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God." John 12:43 KJV "...but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God." Romans 2:29 NKJV Regards! Woody Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Personally I find that occasionally there is dishonest communication. OR Maybe it would be better to say it APPEARS there is dishonest communication. Sometimes the obvious point of a post is ignored. I see people taking an isolated out of context word or two and attacking it while ignoring all the other qualifying words. Some appear to just be after an argument. One recent post described another person's view as a Rat-hole. I think these kind of descriptions can just be left out. I wish we could celebrate that we have different views and not try to change or criticize anothers view but explore it with interest and respect. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
