Gail and one other reacted to Kevin H for a topic
It is a doctrine that has wheat and chaff. Too many of us do not understand it. Too much speculation has been added to it and we have not studied what Mrs. White says and did not say about it. But it is an exciting doctrine. I fear us throwing out the baby with the bathwater.2 points -

Poll, Doctrine no 24
Gail reacted to JoeMo for a topic
Absolutely not. I guess it's because I'm a generic SDA. I believe that the Sabbath is the 7th day of the week and that Jesus is coming in the flesh soon. I also like almost all SDA's I meet. I will stay as long as they keep me. That being said, if they took me off the books, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.1 point -
Poll - Did Jesus drink Alcoholic Wine?
Sojourner reacted to phkrause for a topic
Complete Jewish Bible Matthew 27:34 they gave him wine mixed with bitter gall to drink; but after tasting it, he would not drink it. Matthew 27:48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, soaked it in vinegar, put it on a stick and gave it to him to drink. 49 The rest said, "Wait! Let's see if Eliyahu comes and rescues him." Mark 15:36 One ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar, put it on a stick and gave it to him to drink. "Wait!" he said, "Let's see if Eliyahu will come and take him down." Luke 23:36 The soldiers too ridiculed him; they came up, offered him vinegar John 19:29 A jar full of cheap sour wine was there; so they soaked a sponge in the wine, coated it with oregano leaves and held it up to his mouth. Not in anyone of these verses does it say that he drank what they gave him!!1 point -

Recent Book on the Trinity

Rachel, I see you believe Jesus is/was the Holy Spirit. How then can the Holy Spirit not speak about Himself as the Bible tells us? Would that not then preclude the Holy Spirit from telling us anything about Jesus? It would also preclude, to me, the Biblical authors from having anything to say about Jesus for the Bible was written with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. To me that text destroys the foundation of your beliefs on this subject.1 point -
Jesus Christ and Christ Jesus
phkrause reacted to Gail for a topic
LOL Thinking too much... not like I've been guilty of that!!! Brain working overtime! I've never given a thought as to which order the Christ and the Jesus should appear. To attach Christ (Anointed One) to Jesus would have been a big leap of faith for any Jew of the day, I would think.1 point -
Helping the poor?
Gail reacted to joeb for a topic
Yes it does, in a way. It's in such a way that it probably does as much harm as it does good. The odd part about it is that there is a lot of resistance improving that part of the help that is given to the community. We do have a weekly community meal that anyone is welcome to attend, and those who do not attend it are missing out of some pretty special food. We have people who are not chef's doing the cooking, but their cooking skills rival that of a lot of chef's in vegetarian cooking. They don't put forth the effort to make the food look as "pretty" as a professional chef does, but their ability to build flavors and textures is outstanding.1 point -
Recent Book on the Trinity
Johann reacted to Gregory Matthews for a topic
Rachel, you made an interesting comment that I will comment upon. NOTE: My comment does not attribute anything specific to you: 1) Ellen White was a human with all of the same issues that we face. As a human, her spiritual growth and development took place as does ours. As such, she was subject to being wrong and/or incomplete in her Theological understanding of God and the Bible, just as are we. Her understanding of God and the Bible was develomental and occured over her lifetime. 2) The above does not negate that God used her in the development of the SDA Chruch. But, throughout the history of Christianity, we see God using imperfect humans to accomplish his work. 3) Ellen White's doctrinal understanding may, or it may not, represent the understanding of the SDA denomination of today. 4) In the thinking of EGW, there was more for the SDA chruch to learn about God and in Biblicall (doctrinal) understanding. She did not see the SDA Chruch as being locked into what its leaders in her time understood. 5) She never wanted to be considered the normative standard for doctrine.1 point -

The language of Revelation is symbolic in meaning. If you are going to take a literal meaning approach , you also have to apply it to the number itself as well. Consider the current number of Chrisitans worldwide or even just Adventists. As a percentage, 144,000 represents a very small possible percentage of those now professing to be a part of the possible saved. Your chances and mine are not much better than winning the lottery. Apply the percentage to members of this forum and we are all pretty much excluded. And then there is the characteristic of the 144,000 that they are all virgins. Care to consider that as a literal requirement?1 point -

Woody, you have spoken of the very same dilemma my partner in marriage has. He speaks the very same way. It's a problem that baffles me and I can't pin-point what is happening for him to get victory over pernicious small sins that he sees, but figures God will deal with.1 point -

i cannot say what is specific to any given individual in any sda church individually or corporately. the gift of the Spirit of prophecy within the SDA Church makes a difference in an individual basis and each person may say what they means to them. before Jesus came the first time the incarnate Savior, a prophet was sent to prepare the way. today before Jesus comes the second time a Prophet has been sent to prepare the way. we in this time of earths history before the return of Christ, we are facing a time and events that have never occurred before, and messages have been provided to prepare, guide, and protect God's people individually and cooperatively. personally for me, these volumes have taught me the vulnerability i have in my humanity to the power of selfishness, and the measure of deeper humility i need to walk in to keep my connection to Christ. I do not believe i could have comprehended this without the gift of the messages given in the Spirit of prophecy writings. this is one of many things i did not find in my experiences in other Christian denominations.1 point -

The Spirit of Jesus, the expression of His character, unique ion the SDA Church, taught in writings of EG White's gift. We are gifted by these works, by being educated to what the Christian life entails.1 point -

it makes me wonder if the subjugation of women was the result of sin, and this is Adam's blaming just going on and on reechoed. Yes no one minds women serving in position of leadership in all kinds of fields today. This was not so over a hundred years ago. The struggle for women who wanted to vote, or to become scientists, and doctors, and lawyers is a part of our history. Nurses and teacher's were some of the accepted positions for women. And this was not because that was the only gifts and talents they had. The positive changes in society as in outlawing slavery, and outlawing child labor, and permitting women leadership positions are not against the will or law of God. Why do we make ado over women Spiritual laborers in positions of leadership in the church? It does puzzle me.1 point -
Is coffee drinking really a sin?
TruthSeeker123 reacted to debbym for a topic
there were occasions when e white used the substances to help her when her system needed it. i dont think it is a black and white thing. health reform is something progressive, and e. white took a long time to stop using meat, and said excessive sugar was more harmful them eating meat. we may not have meat at potlucks, but we do have generous pies, cookies and cakes. sin is whatever you know the Lord is asking you to do, and you do not do it. if he has not spoken to you about the Sabbath for you Sabbath breaking is not sin. when we are in ignorance God winks. also God is leading us step by step, if we take steps apart from him we fall into self righteousness, and that is tougher to deal with then whether we drink tea or coffee. our conscience does not live on the dry pages of a book, it is in our heart.1 point -
