Survey for Seventh Day Adventists; What does a "head" represent in prophecy?
RidallBug and one other reacted to jamesonofthunder for a topic
"The solemn messages that have been given in their order in the Revelation are to occupy the first place in the minds of God’s people." —Testimonies for the Church 8:302 (1904). Survey for Seventh Day Adventists; What does a "head" mean in prophecy? So many people claim that the "heads" on the beast in Revelation 17 are world empires since Babylon but what possible benefit would there be for God to include empires that have come and gone long before the time of the last days in a prophecy FOR the last days? (The eighth king of Rev 17:11-12 leads the world to "perdition", the end of the age, so this proves it is end time) In the most simplistic comprehension of the possible intent for God to use heads as an important aspect of the imagery of this prophecy what good could using new images to identify past kingdoms be? The King of Babylon was the only "head" out of all the old kingdoms in Daniels visions, and Assyria was not included in the prophetic timeline of Daniel so why would they and the others after Babylon be included? A HEAD is the controlling power of the beast it is seen attached to. Why else would God use the symbol of a head? The head controls the body. How can a world empire from a thousand years earlier be the controlling power of the end time beast? That makes absolutely no sense at all, and no other prophecy does this. Even the image of the head of Gold in Daniel was said to represent Nebuchadnezzar, the HEAD of Babylon. The four heads of the Leopard beast were the four generals of Greece after Alexander died. So there is major precedent that a HEAD represent the HEAD of state of the beast it rides. A head cut off from the body is dead. “…for scholars declared BEFORE THE ADVENTIST MOVEMENT BEGAN that Rome had presented to the world, as a unique and marvelous feature of history, SEVEN DISTINCT FORMS OF GOVERNMENT. All that the Adventists did was to say, as the most natural thing in the world, that if Rome did have seven forms of government, the seven heads of the dragon, WHICH IS A SYMBOL OF ROME, must be designed to represent that fact. The old Roman historians, Livy and Tacitus, acknowledged the different forms of government in Rome, to be so many “heads” of the Roman commonwealth…And one of the earliest Protestant commentators, Osiander, as early as 1511, names the whole seven as we have them; namely, Kings, Consuls, Decemvirs, Dictators, Triumvirs, Emperors, and Popes, as the forms of Roman government represented by the seven heads of the dragon of Revelation 12, and the seven-headed beasts of Revelation 13 and Revelation 17. Adventists, under the first (angel's) message, at once adopted this view. {SHR 1.1} The last head of the Dragon Beast in Rev 12 is PAPAL ROME. Then the next beast in Rev 13 uses the same symbolic language but those other six form of Roman government have passed away so they are no longer the meaning of the image. The seven heads now represent the Papal leaders of the Papal form of ROMAN government leading the beast. Millions of people in the protestant movement died because they protested Papal power. They taught since Wycliffe that since Rome had seven forms of ROMAN government, that the seven heads on the ROMAN BEAST MUST symbolize this unique fact, ROME had seven forms of Government so the heads of the beast must be an overview of all seven forms of Roman Government, and the pioneers of the Seventh Day Adventists all agreed and said this was in perfect agreement with scriptures, but today every single Seventh Day Adventist pastor throws this teaching away? They all say the seven heads are the world empires since Babylon and that is INSANE! They are in effect saying they are more in tune with the Holy Spirit than Ellen White was, who said the Pope was the HEAD who received the deadly wound. I have been shown that the seven heads are the seven last popes leading to the eighth pope after the healing of the head wound in the 1929 Lateran Treaty. POPE FRANCIS IS THE LAST POPE! Prove me wrong. Go to this blog page and read and tell me where I am wrong. http://eighthking.blogspot.com/2011/12/whos-is-anti-christ-eighth-king-of-rev.html If you cannot prayerfully think for yourself you will be deceived. People say so what? What does this do for us but bring persecution? The three angels messages is all about warning the world who is Antichrist. If you cannot stand the heat then you are not under the banner.2 points -

Is coffee drinking really a sin?
RidallBug reacted to EmptyTomb for a topic
Some believe Ellen White gives a lot of personal commentary which they claim is not inspired. And some claim all is inspired. The question is this: Is coffee drinking a sin? --------------------------- Letter 44, 1896 Tea and coffee drinking is a sin, an injurious indulgence, which, like other evils, injures the soul. These darling idols create an excitement, a morbid action of the nervous system; and after the immediate influence of the stimulants is gone, it lets down below par just to that degree that its stimulating properties elevated above par. {CD 425.3} {Te 80.1} ------------------------- All should bear a clear testimony against tea and coffee, never using them. They are narcotics, injurious alike to the brain and to the other organs of the body. --Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 430. {Te 79.3} -------------------------- Those who indulge a perverted appetite, do it to the injury of health and intellect. They cannot appreciate the value of spiritual things. Their sensibilities are blunted, and sin does not appear very sinful, and truth is not regarded of greater value than earthly treasure.--Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4, p. 129. {Te 80.2} --------------------------- Some have backslidden and tampered with tea and coffee. Those who break the laws of health will become blinded in their minds and break the law of God.--Review and Herald, Oct. 21, 1884. {Te 80.5} ----------------------------------- Those who have received instruction regarding the evils of the use of flesh foods, tea and coffee, and rich and unhealthful food preparations, and who are determined to make a covenant with God by sacrifice, will not continue to indulge their appetite for food that they know to be unhealthful. God demands that the appetites be cleansed, and that self-denial be practiced in regard to those things which are not good. This is a work that will have to be done before His people can stand before Him a perfected people. --Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 153, 154. {Te 80.6} --------------------------- ET1 point -

EMERGENCE CHRISTIANITY'S IMPACT

EMERGENCE CHRISTIANITY'S IMPACT ON THE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST MOVEMENT January 9, 2015 John Jovan Markovic Many people are aware of the existence of the emerging/emergent church movement, but few know that the idea of “emerging/emergent church” goes back to the early 20th century. The emerging/emergent church movement is a tangible manifestation of a new way of thinking, a new way of doing Christianity, and a new worldview increasingly referred to as Emergence Christianity. The latter is a broader category, and once understood, it becomes clear that it is in direct opposition to the biblical teachings and biblical worldview. Hence, Emergence Christianity and biblical Christianity are incompatible. This is part one. - See more at: http://advindicate.com/articles/2015/1/9/emergence-christianitys-impact-on-the-seventh-day-adventist-movement#sthash.eJjJqUU6.dpuf 20140808-1045-JohnJovanMarkovi-EmergenceChristia...mpactontheSeventh-dayAdventistMovementPart1-1 point -
Not under the Law...
Sojourner reacted to Kevin H for a topic
Over about the past 35 years there has been some amazing discoveries in the life of Paul. It has been pointed out that while we have been reading Paul's words, that we have tended to read into them the events of the Church-Synagogue split of 135 AD, the views of St. Augustine and the views of the Reformers, especially Martin Luther. Thus despite reading his words we have not been getting very much of Paul's theology. Things are starting to change. There are a number of new books out. Of course I'll refer here to Jim Fleming again: http://www.biblicalresources.net/product.cfm?product=37 http://www.biblicalresources.net/product.cfm?product=64 http://www.biblicalresources.net/product.cfm?product=57 Dr. Fleming (and also these newer studies) point out that Saul use to belong to the synagogue of the freedmen. Archaeology has discovered more about this group. They were people either taken in to slavery or the children of those taken into slavery, who after a certain number of years of work they were set free and given full Roman citizenship and full Roman Citizenship to their children. However during those years they had to work 7 days a week, thus no Sabbath keeping. Those who joined the Synagogue of the Freedmen wanted to make up for those years of Sabbath breaking and other ways they were not able to be faithful, but joining a right wing, fanatical synagogue where the people wanted to prove that they were better law keepers than the Pharisees. They were a hate group. They would learn Hebrew and Aramaic and refuse to speak any other language and wanted the Hellenistic Jews to get in line. They wanted to prove that the were more Jewish than the Pharisees or any other Jew who lived in the land of Israel. The Pharisees and other Jews saw them as an extreme group, similar to our KKK or the Westboro Baptist Church. The term "Under the Law" was frequently (not always but frequent enough to consider this was what Paul had in mind as he wrote these words) not talking about the 10 commandments or the Torah, but these unique far right wing extras that this Synagogue did to prove that they were better Jews than anyone else.1 point -

ooo! I like role play. Let me try. Hm... So, let's say I walked into this Seventh-day Adventist church and slid into a nice seat in the back, as I prefer to do... Opening Praise and worship songs - flowing, all members standing. Singing in the Spirit - Singing in Tongues. It's likely that I missed this part, to be completely honest. I normally don't make it to the early song service. However, sometimes I do. It's possible that I already heard the music from outside the sanctuary. Depending on what type of music it was, I may not even go in (if it's too loud, for example) until the song service is over. However, if the music is beautiful, such as hymns, I may enter. It's possible that even if they are singing in another tongue that I might go in, because I like to listen to music in other languages, too, and might simply think they are singing in a language that I do not understand. Unless, of course, that fact is announced to warn/educate visitors. In the latter case, I might slip out at any point between then and maybe the second or third song. I would try to do so as politely as possible. Prayer, (which may lead into further prayer in Tongues) Assuming that I did not slip out during the song service, and they were not already praying in tongues and did not warn us that they were going to pray in tongues (in which case, I honestly believe I would quietly walk out), I would likely kneel or stand reverently, or lean forward, depending on how the others are positioned while praying, and/or any impressions that I feel as to how I should pray. I would try to follow along. However, as soon as they started praying in tongues, (assuming that this comes as a surprise to me) I would start praying for them and to the Lord, asking for His help in such a situation. Prayer in tongues - General across Congregation. At this point, I excuse myself. Single Tongues and interpretation by another members with potentially a prophetic focus of what G-d is saying to the congregation. I'm gone at this point. Words of knowledge "there is one amongst us here that has a sore knee, come forward and be healed" and similar cases. It's possible that I actually left the church at this point. However, assuming that I didn't (perhaps I did not have a ride and it was too far to walk, or I had been invited there by a friend), I would likely sit and watch curiously, praying that if it is from God, God heals, and if it is not from God, that God does not allow anyone to be deceived, and leave the rest up to God. This doesn't mean that my mind will change either way, because I believe in testing all things, but I would be respectful if they are behaving reverently. However, if they are healing in a way that has people writing on the floor, disappearing and reappearing places, screaming, etc, I would probably spend the rest of the church service sitting outside and waiting to leave. Communion - every second week, bread and grape juice in thimble glasses. Assuming that this is the second week and that I'm not spending the rest of the church service outside I think I would decline the communion. I don't have a problem with communion itself, and the average SDA church (at least in the US) has communion of unleavened bread and grape juice in a thimble glass (I think), but footwashing isn't mentioned here. I also believe in heart preparation and likely did not know they were having communion in sufficient time to prepare. I also, honestly, at that point would not want to seem to encourage what seems to me to be confusion. Offering I likely wouldn't have anything to put into the offering plate. But, if I did, it would depend on what it was going to. This is an SDA church, after all, and I can fill out a tithe and offering envelope and designate where I would like the offering to go to. Sermon I might linger by the door and listen to the sermon. However, I would be following along closely with my Bible, accepting that which seems true and arguing in my mind against anything that doesn't make sense, all the while praying for God's guidance for me, the speaker, and on all the hearts of the people. Altar Call - invitation to be born again, personal prayer for members needs, Anointing with oil of the sick. Under normal circumstances, I would respond. But, with the speaking of tongues attached, I would be uncomfortable coming forward, for fear that they might try to cast out some demon. Besides, I'm already born again. Slaying in the Spirit - prayer that ends with the person becoming overwhelmed by the presence of G-d and falling over backwards. If I've lasted this long, I'd likely be praying for God's Real Spirit to be coming over that person and casting out the real demons that seem to me to be present. And would be holding back a sermon of my own. I'd probably walk out backwards. Personal Prophecy, Nope, I'm gone at this point. Songs to finish and often through the altar call. Sitting outside the church, praying for everyone. Fellowship. I might come back in at this point for the food and to talk to someone. I'll possibly be so overwhelmed that I'll be giving the individual across from me a Bible study on the real gift of speaking in tongues and what it really is, and also on the gifts of the spirit and how devils can work miracles too. It's possible that I wasn't prepared for this ahead of time, and don't have the references right there, but I'll probably promise to share them later and take down their e-mail, because it's likely I won't be going back to that particular church for a good long while. It's possible that the reason why I share all this is because the person across from me asked why I stepped out of the church and didn't come back in, and continued to press me (though I'd likely be afraid to say why at first) until I just couldn't hold it in any longer. EMERGENCE CHRISTIANITY'S IMPACT
B/W Photodude reacted to bonnie for a topic
I have found over the years that background, experience, research, education, specialized expertise or anything of the sort counts for very little to some people, unless whatever is said by that expert validates or confirms the reader or listener's own thinking. It is all the more ironic to see those typically critical or skeptical of higher education and those with graduate and professional degrees laying aside all their critical thinking along those lines when they find that educated person saying what they want to hear. As I have been accused in the past of being against higher education, The majority of my family and extended family have that "higher education" They are Dr's RN's ,college professors, soon to be a second attorney (women by the way)two conference presidents, etc.My grandchildren of college age are all in or have graduated college with the exception of one,who has young children to care for.Rather than hire a substitute mother for her children she is content to wait until they are older and in school full time. One National Scholarship winner with a free ride for four years of college and it is looking as if we will have a second this year. It isn't "higher education that I am against,it is being so arrogant because of higher education that if someone bent over the arrogance would run out In my own professional experience, I have found at times that the carefully considered analysis and researched legal judgment of a lawyer can often carry less weight than the off the cuff contrary opinion of the complete stranger in the street if that contrary opinion is what Someone wants to hear. Would I take the opinion of an attorney in religious matters? Nope, especially those that are of the liberal camp. Nor do most people go to the stranger in the street for information A few years ago we had an opportunity to meet with several attorney's.Odd how many different opinions there was from the experts. One disagreed with all and we chose him. Most here knows how that turned out But more to your point, education does not always override a personal flaw of forming an opinion and gathering and paying attention only to information that supports that opinion vs gathering and analyzing the evidence to arrive at an conclusion about it. For some, no amount of education will cure that defect. But they often become the successful and acclaimed experts of their own opinion among those who agree with them, reinforced uncritically by some sort of credentials. That speaks to a lot of "experts doesn't" it? You are right,no amount of education can cure some of their arrogance . For me I will rely on the Ultimate expert, rather than an attorney or anyone else with "higher education"1 point -

It says many spirits have gone out and test the spirits whether they be of God. Also the gift of tongues was understandable by those speaking other languages and they were supposed to take turns and if noone could interpret to be quiet. It was primarily other human languages. So if someone started speaking Russian or Italian that didnt know it that would be one thing. But this is not what we see. At best it is a confusing emotional exercise . At worst something to be afraid of.as EG White and others have said. Because if they are being moved by a power outside themselves to do what the Bible says not to do, what are they being moved by?1 point -

JoeMo reacted to Sojourner for a topic
The video of Rodney Howard Browne is simply to demonstrate slaying in the spirit and other pentecostal theology. I went along to his meetings which were hosted by the Assemblies of God denomination with the support of other Pentecostal groups also and it was exactly the same as in the video and can be no different to what happens on a weekly basis in AOG churches here in Australia. My own views are that I am opposed to Cessationist theology and believe that all Spiritual Gifts are for use in the SDA church today when they are needed or have a specific purpose. I feel that the gift of prophecy did not start with just Ellen White, nor does it finish with just Ellen White. I have no doubt that God still guides people into the prophetic gift today. Tongues - has been discussed here at length before, if done in the manner that scripture says and Joe describes above I don't disagree with that. Singing in tongues, not my thing personally and not something I agree with. Word of Knowlege - Essential Spiritual Gift for use in any church and should be encouraged accordingly. Personal one on one prophecy - again something I would openly encourage. Altar Calls - already openly occurring in some SDA churches, a shame that more churches do not share that with their own congregation. Slaying in the Spirit - I have given this quite some thought over the years and am not opposed to it providing that people are not doing it out of peer pressure or for the wrong reasons. Its totally reasonable to me that Altar ministry can be a very emotional time and that people do fall over in awe of the presence of G-d. So no real problems with that. Perhaps another interesting one could be described as "Quaking" or "Shaking" in the presence of G-d at the altar or even in the pews during worship. My understanding is that this first originates with George Fox and the Quaker movement which predates the Pentecostal Charismatic Renewal movement in Azusa street. Yet my experience is that this also features in AOG meetings here from time to time. - I don't really disagree with that either, if people are becoming aware of the presence of G-d as He has drawn near to them, then again I don't see anything really unusual about that either. Is Rodney Howard Browne some type of charlatan as the video maker alleges? - I don't know and would probably go to someone like John Ankerberg to get his opinion before I decided something like that.1 point
