EMERGENCE CHRISTIANITY'S IMPACT ON THE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST MOVEMENT January 9, 2015 John Jovan Markovic Many people are aware of the existence of the emerging/emergent church movement, but few know that the idea of “emerging/emergent church” goes back to the early 20th century. The emerging/emergent church movement is a tangible manifestation of a new way of thinking, a new way of doing Christianity, and a new worldview increasingly referred to as Emergence Christianity. The latter is a broader category, and once understood, it becomes clear that it is in direct opposition to the biblical teachings and biblical worldview. Hence, Emergence Christianity and biblical Christianity are incompatible. In an interesting legal case, Emily Herx, a teacher at a Roman Catholic school alleges that she was fired from her position as a teacher at the St. Vincent de Paul School due to the fact that she was attempting to become pregnant due to in vitro fertilization (IVF) which violates Roman Catholic beliefs. The Church attempted to get the lawsuit dismissed and failed in that attempt and the case went to trial. That jury trial awarded Ms. Herx the sum of about 1.9 million dollars. That award has since been reduced to the sum of $543,803. It remains to be seen whether or not the Roman Catholic Church will appeal that decision. Obama Praises Muslim Cleric Who Backed Fatwa on Killing of U.S. Soldiers Controversial cleric gets nod in Obama’s speech at the United Nations SHARE TWEET EMAIL President Barack Obama addresses the United Nations General Assembly / AP BY: Adam Kredo September 24, 2014 1:40 pm President Barack Obama favorably quoted and praised on Wednesday in his speech before the United Nations a controversial Muslim cleric whose organization has reportedly endorsed the terror group Hamas and supported a fatwa condoning the murder of U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Obama in his remarks offered praise to controversial cleric Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah and referred to him as a moderate Muslim leader who can help combat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s (ISIL or ISIS) radical ideology. However, Bin Bayyah himself has long been engulfed in controversy for many of his views, including the reported backing of a 2004 fatwathat advocated violent resistance against Americans fighting in Iraq. This is not the first time that the Obama administration has extoled Bin Bayyah, who also has served as the vice president of a Muslim scholars group founded by a radical Muslim Brotherhood leader who has called “for the death of Jews and Americans,” according to Fox News and other reports. The State Department’s Counterterrorism Bureau (CT) was forced to issue multiple apologies earlier this year after the Washington Free Beaconreported on its promotion of Bin Bayyah on Twitter. “This should not have been tweeted and has since been deleted,” the CT Bureau tweeted at the time after many expressed anger over the original endorsement of Bin Bayyah. However, it appears that Obama and the White House are still supportive of Bin Bayyah, who, despite his past statements, is still hailed by some as a moderate alternative to ISIL and al Qaeda. “The ideology of ISIL or al Qaeda or Boko Haram will wilt and die if it is consistently exposed, confronted, and refuted in the light of day,” Obama said before the U.N., according to a White House transcript of his remarks. “Look at the new Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies—Sheikh bin Bayyah described its purpose: ‘We must declare war on war, so the outcome will be peace upon peace,’” Obama said, quoting the controversial cleric. Concern over the administration’s relationship with Bin Bayyah started as early as 2013, when outrage ensued after he was reported to have metwith Obama’s National Security Council staff at the White House. While Bin Bayyah has condemned the actions of groups such as Boko Haram and ISIL, he also has taken controversial positions against Israel. He issued in 2009 a fatwa “barring ‘all forms of normalization’ with Israel,” according to a Fox report on the White House meeting. Additionally, the notorious 2004 fatwa permitting armed resistance against U.S. military personnel in Iraq reportedly stated that “resisting occupation troops” is a “duty” for all Muslims, according to reports about the edict. Patrick Poole, a reporter and terrorism analyst who has long tracked Bin Bayyah, expressed shock that the Obama administration would endorse the cleric on the world stage. “It is simply amazing that just a few months ago the State Department had to publicly apologize for tweeting out it’s support for Bin Bayyah, only to have Barack Obama go before the leaders of the entire world and publicly endorse Bin Bayyah’s efforts,” Poole said. “It seems that nothing can stop this administration’s determination to rehabilitate Bin Bayyah’s image, transforming him from the Islamic cleric who issued the fatwa to kill Americans in Iraq and calling for the death of Jews to the de facto White House Islamic mufti,” he said. This type of mentality has contributed to the administration’s foreign policy failures in the region,” Poole said. “This is a snapshot of why this administration’s foreign policy in the Middle East is a complete catastrophe,” he said. “The keystone of their policy has been that so-called ‘moderate Islamists’ were going to be the great counter to al Qaeda. But if you take less than 30 seconds to do a Google search on any of these ‘moderate Islamists,’ you immediately find they are just a degree or two from the most hardcore jihadis and have little to no difference when it comes to condoning violence.” A White House official said that the president’s remarks speak for themselves and declined to add anything further. I have been thinking a little in recent times about the suggestion that G-d is Omnipresent and by that I mean that G-d exists in all places and at all periods of time in the same instance. One thing that I have been considering is that I am not sure that the Apostle John simply saw a prophetic vision and wrote the Book of Revelation from that vision. It has occurred to me that John actually participates in events prophecied in the book of Revelation as opposed to simply viewing them happening and recording them. Some evidence of what I mean to say is this, In John Revelation Ch 5, they wish to open the scroll and no one is initially found worthy. In Rev 5:5 John begins to weep and is addressed directly by one of the elders participating in that event and told “Do not weep”, it then goes on to stay that Jesus is in fact worthy to open the scroll. In John 7 the great number of people are present who are dressed in white robes. Again John is directly addressed by the Elder and asked “These in white robes – who are they and where did they come from?” and John then answers him the question as to who these people are. John 10:8 talks again about John being addressed directly, being given the scroll and being told to eat it. There are more examples than just these, but these three are good examples of the point that I am trying to get across. That point being that John is not simply observing these events, he is participating in them at some point in the future which we now know to have to be at least 2000+ years in advance of his natural life span, indicating that G-d has transported him via his omnipresence to the occurrence of this event in the future and not only that but gives him a specific role to play in these events. Thoughts?

Thank you JoeMo. I agree we should not judge others- our job is to love and share the Gospel, and as we have opportunity to do so graciously, the Sabbath as well.

I've been a "silent" member of CA for quite a while ... may have made one or two comments in three or four years. From your description of the way you involve meditative prayer, visualization, etc. in your worship, I would say it differs a whole lot from what I have understood the teachings of Spiritual Formation to be. I applaud the goals and aims of The One Project ... my only concern is that it doesn't get subtly derailed. Thanks for sharing.

Ellen White was a Methodist before she had any sabbatarian notions.. if we use the idea that a Christian whose religious views differ somewhat from those of own should be ostracized from speaking at any SDA-sponsored function, we might be missing out on huge blessings... but if someone feels their spiritual life would be compromised by listening to any Christian speaker other than acknowledged SDAs, it would probably be best not to attend any function that is not 100% Adventist..

Hi Trevor, the reason that I abbreviate that term is because I have become aware that to many Jewish and Messianic believers that it is considered sacred and it is ascribed holiness and any of the names for G-d are considered to holy to say. After considering this for a while I decided that I agreed with them and whilst I don't even remotely mind if others choose to use the full names, my observation is that it is a good thing to show that type of respect and reverence towards G-d by doing that. Again its something I decided for myself only and not something I would tell others they should do also.
