I was named Deputy Head of School (Learning and Teaching) in my current university, Griffith. I convened one large program for teaching high school teachers last year, and this is the next step up that ladder - I'm now responsible for managing all the learning and teaching in all of the 29 degree programs, both undergraduate and postgraduate, offered in our School to more than 4000 students. It's daunting but exciting, and I'm already enjoying it a lot. I'm off to the University Senior Leadership Conference this coming week. Or, as my beloved puts it, "hobnobbing with the bigwigs". (of course, I'm now the newest and tiniest tadpole in that particular pond!)

Could somebody who knows him please provide some info about him? The more I listen to him, the more I like his theology. He has the most profound understanding of God's law that I have ever heard. He also quotes scripture and SOP verbatim, is that from memory or teleprompter?

So sorry to hear this awful news. I will pray the truth will come out. If true, its really sad, but it sounds like he's being railroaded.

I don't think you were reading carefully. I never said or implied he should or would get 100 years. And I wouldn't take too seriously the projection by the New American article as to his possible sentence since on so many other aspects of his case it was categorically wrong or missing a great deal of essential facts. It is highly unlikely that he will be sentence to 100 years for what he is accused of. it sounds like they are totally the maximum sentence for each count and assuming the sentence will call for them to be served consecutively. What is more likely is that the sentencing will be for them to be served concurrently and not necessarily at the maximum number of years allowed. In other words if he is convicted on 5 counts of crimes that each have a maximum potential sentence of 20 years each, the court is most likely to impose varying amounts less than 20 years, let's say the longest of which is 10 years, for each and require that the sentences be concurrent. That would mean the actual jail time will be no more than 10 years, with credit for time already served and opportunity for early parole for good behavior or other mitigating circumstances. I would be surprised if he was in prison for more than 3-5 years for the tax evasion and tax fraud. But the worse problem he is his complete defiance of the law and the legal system. By showing not sense of cooperation and clearly thumbing his nose at the court's authority he is his own worst enemy and has nobody to blame but himself. That anti-government defiance will very likely greatly compound his lproblems and would justifiably cause the judge to impose a much harsher sentence. But Dr Dino controls his own fate in that regard.

I have heard the argument made several times, by different Hebrew Roots teachers. They say that "the law" in Galatians was the Rabbinic tradition of the "Oral Law". I can't quite buy that one. The law in Galatians was "our school master to lead us to Christ". That certainly could NOT be said of the Oral Torah, or the traditions of the Pharisees. It seems that some folks want another Mt Sinai type event, with glory and a thunderous voice of God, to tell us that the system of animal sacrifice ministered through mortal sinful men, can now be set aside. I think that God sent an even greater event. The death of the Lamb which God provided. The sacrificial system thru the Aaronic priesthood was a PROPHECY. That was God's plan all along. No man is changing something that God did not intend to change. God Himself changed it. He planned it that way! It is CLEAR from First Century Writings that a journey to Jerusalem, to present a sin offering, or a whole burnt offering is NOT NECESSARY for justification, sanctification, salvation, or access to the Father. "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness, to everyone who believes" (Romans 10:4).

Amen! If we really think about it, it's God all the way through. Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. We more or less just have to cooperate.

John Ortberg is an interesting person. He was the senior pastor in a Presbyterian so-called mega-church with a typical congregational attendance of over 4,000 each Sunday. [NOTE: I realize that figures that large will probably indicate to some that he could not be a follower of Christ as even in so-called "end-time" there would not be that many followers of Christ. Recently he has led his congregation to leave the Presbyterian denomination to which it belonged. His reasons for leading it out of that denomination were two-fold: a) Doctrinal differences and 'b) Administrative differences with Presbyterian policy. That congregation is paying a very large price to leave--some $9,000,000! They have agreed to pay that amount. Ortberg, and the congregation has made the decision to affiliate with the ECO. HIs teaching ministry is focused on making Christ a part of every aspect of our life.

Jesus was unlike us in that often when we suffer, we do not have the ability to say, I am not doing this. Yet He willingly went through more for us than we will ever endure. If we deny our own cross, we are denying Jesus. Yet what is the Cross in the life of a Christian? It is being willing to follow him, observe His commandments, but it is something deeper. To deal with challenges and trials with equanimity, to be gracious even when one must be firm, to be calm in difficult circumstances... even when one must get out of a circumstance that is not the best for us, to do so graciously... And not to do these things as a mental exercise or because we are a good person in and of ourselves, but because God is exerting a calming and gracious influence over us. Just some thoughts of what I would like to be more like.

CFK1 asks: "would you say that contemplative prayer, spiritual formation, etc. as practiced by the Emergent Church, is following Christ? Do you see no problems with the origin and concept of these practices?" The short answer is yes; I think the emergent church movement is following Christ; and that I have no problems with these concepts and practices. The long answer is that the origins of many of the practices is with the Jewish and Christian churches. There are 17 Bible references to "meditiate"; 6 to "meditation", 118 to "vision", amd 96 references to "dreams" from God - all of which were important to the "dreamers". The Bible is the origin of these practices - the New Age and Easterm Mysticism stole them from God's people. If all these Bible folk practiced meditation (contemplative prayer), visions and dreams, I'm not gonna condemn it. If the emergent church leads to the unity of believers, bring it on!

Ellen White was a Methodist before she had any sabbatarian notions.. if we use the idea that a Christian whose religious views differ somewhat from those of own should be ostracized from speaking at any SDA-sponsored function, we might be missing out on huge blessings... but if someone feels their spiritual life would be compromised by listening to any Christian speaker other than acknowledged SDAs, it would probably be best not to attend any function that is not 100% Adventist..

It was only when I gave up in utter frustration, that Jesus showed me what He could do in my life. My advice to those who wish to please God, is to give up. Stop trying. Tell HIM you now realize that ANY goodness, or righteousness you display - is His work in you.

Would God give a Covenant that "gives birth to bondage?" According to Heb 8 & 10, it seems to me, the terms of the NC are the same as the Sinaitic Covenant. The NC can be turned into a yoke of bondage just as surely as the Israelites did to the Sinai Covenant if the liberating righteousness of Christ is not received by faith.

The interesting thing is that the Sinai covenant gives BIRTH to bondage, in other words, The principles contained in the Ten Commandments do not give birth to bondage but the covenant or motive by which we view them gives birth to bondage. The Old Covenant was founded on obeying the Law or die. This way of relating to God's principles of love and righteousness gives birth to bondage. We, as followers of Christ, do not view obedience to the Law as the means to attain righteousness for Christ is the end of the Law as the means to be righteous for those who believe. Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. We are not in bondage to the Law in trying to be made right by keeping it but the Law still defines godly love. I don't keep the Law to be made right, I keep the Law as an expression of my love.
