    Sect vs. cult

I have recently seen Internet blogs in which mention was made of the SDA Church and whether or not it was either a sect or a cult. I have been concerned in that often these posts have used those words in ways that differ from what I believe to be appropriate. In modern use those terms have been applied to much more that religious groups. From that perspective, dictionary definitions may differ somewhat from what I see as an appropriate definition for their use as applied to a religious group. Here is how I use them, as applied to religious groups. Sect: A subgroup of a larger group, which differs in some ways from other subgroups within that larger group, but is still considered to be a part of the larger group. Example: If Christianity is considered to be the larger group, :individual subgroups, or sects, could be Baptists, Methodists, Catholics and more. Cult: A group which may have some ties with a larger group, but differs to an extent that it is not considered to be a part of that larger group. Example: If Judaism is considered to be the larger group, then Messianic Jew might be considered to be part of a cult. NOTE: I am aware that some will disagree with the above example. Simply look at it from the perspective of making a point. In any case from the perspective above, Adventism is properly a sect, but not a cult.

'Support Memories Pizza' Fund Raises $35,000 in Just Four Hours

'Support Memories Pizza' Fund Raises $35,000 in Just Four Hours Cortney O'Brien | Apr 02, 2015 It's come to the point where we now have to create funding sites to defend our religious freedom. Nevertheless, that is just what radio host Dana Loesch did Wednesday night after Memories Pizza, a small pizza joint in Walkerton, Indiana, announced their support of the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act that has caused so much unnecessary contention. Crystal O'Connor, co-owner of Memories Pizza, spoke to Loesch about the sudden barrage of hate her and her dad had endured over the last 24 hours simply because they had stood by their principles. “We are a Christian establishment,” O’Connor told WBND-TV. “We're not discriminating against anyone, that's just our belief and anyone has the right to believe in anything.” Those comments stirred some vicious backlash from the 'tolerant' left. One of the most egregious responses had to be a threatening tweet from a softball coach at Walkerton's Concord Community High School. Before her account was deleted, she wrote, “Who’s going to Walkerton, IN to burn down #memoriespizza w me?” Her message prompted other Twitter users to alert the local police department and the coach was swiftly suspended. Lost in the attacks on the O'Connors, is the fact that the co-owner did not say Memories Pizza would refuse service to gays; she said they would not cater gayweddings. On Thursday morning's "Fox and Friends" on Fox News, Elisabeth Hasselbeck argued this was a clear distinction, considering a wedding caterer becomes almost a participant in the wedding, offering tastings before or after the ceremony and so forth. Yet, because of the severity of the threats the O'Connors were receiving, they were forced to close up shop. The income Crystal was receiving from pizza sales was paying for her apartment, she told Loesch. Now, she said, she has no income coming in at all. That's when the outraged radio host announced she was starting a 'Support Memories Pizza' page on GoFundMe.com in order to help the business owners get back on their feet. People responded immediately: Just one hour later, their goal would be achieved - and then some. The total currently stands at over $70,000. This outpouring of support doesn't only come from Americans' love for pizza, but for religious liberty. The O'Connors don't deserve to be demonized for their beliefs, they deserve the same rights as any other American who dares to hold opinions that stray from the status quo. Hopefully this money gets them off the hit list and back in the kitchen! Update: 'Support Memories Pizza' has now surpassed $100,000 in funding support. Keep watching the money pour in for religious liberty.

    Where were Protestants?

Catholics claim they are the true continuation of apostle Pete. Throughout the world history, when they talk about christianity it was commonly referred to Catholic church. Majority of art works are expression of that of Catholic belief. So, when and where the protestants originate? Catholics claim Peter formed their church, what about the rest of the apostles, did they have any church?

Is That Too Much To Ask?

Just then, another huge wave appears out of nowhere and crashes on the beach. As the water recedes, the boy is standing there, smiling, splashing around as if nothing had happened. A loud voice booms from the sky, "I have returned your grandson. Are you satisfied?" Sarah responded, "Well ... He WAS wearing a hat."

    Dog Eat Dog

Abe and Irv were neighbors in a Florida retirement community, and both proud pet owners. “My dog is so smart,” Abe bragged, “that every morning he waits for the paperboy to come around. He brings the kid his tip and then brings me the paper, along with my morning medicine.” “I know,” said Irv. “How could you know?” asked Abe. “Because my dog told me.”

    Sect vs. cult

I find that from an Adventist's perspective, Adventism is a sect of Christianity. But, from the eyes of a Lutheran or a Baptist (as these are the only other religions of people I've asked) using the same definitions above, Adventism is a cult.

    Managerial Malpractice

Chaim Yankel opened a clothing store and was trying to manage it to the best of his capabilities, although sometimes he came up short. Once day he overheard his cashier say to a customer, “No, we haven’t had it for a while now, and it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting it soon.” Chaim Yankel quickly assured the customer that they’d have it next week – no questions asked. After the customer left, Chaim Yankel read his cashier the riot act. “How many times do I have to tell you? Never tell the customer that we’re out of anything! Tell them we’ll have it next week. Now, what was it that she was asking about?” “Rain.”

    A challenging Book

Peter Manseauy. ONE NATION UNDER GODS: A NEW AMEERICAN HISTORY. Little Brown & Company, 431 pages. This book will be of interest in two areas: 1) It tells the stories of American slavery with little-known accounts. E. G. In a time when slaves were not expected to be able to read, Omar ibn Said, wrote in his North Carolina cell, in Arabic, which none of his jailors even recognized as written script. 2) I suggests that the U.S. is much more than a Christian nation, it is also a Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist and more nation.

    Sect vs. cult

Adventism is not a cult; however, certain very vocal SDA subcultures make it appear to be one. There are many very vocal SDA groups who appear to put EGW's writings on an equal par with scripture, in spite of her admonition not to do so. I would submit that those people whose only contact with Adventism is through those subcultures would have adequate reason to consider Adventism to be a cult. Putting another's writings on an equal or higher plane than scripture is what defines a cult for me.

    Minnie Minoso

Native Cubans could move to the big leagues without dealing much in politics, secrecy and defection six decades ago. Cuban baseball talent was highly regarded and increasingly desirable. Not coincidentally, Minnie Minoso was at the forefront of the international game then. His baseball skills caught the eye. His distinctive name caught the ear. And his warm and engaging personality made him an uncommonly popular figure anywhere he played -- no, anywhere he went -- and helped forge a legacy that, to this day, prompts baseball folks to smile. http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/news/article/110808820?partnerId=ed-8983323-779725833
