Firefighter's Prayer When I am called to duty, God, wherever flames may rage, give me strength to save a life, whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child before it is too late, or save an older person from the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert, and hear the weakest shout, quickly and efficiently to put the fire out. I want to fill my calling, to give the best in me, to guard my friend and neighbor, and protect his property. And if according to Your will I must answer death's call, bless with your protecting hand, my family one and all.

Rachel I suggest that there is a sequence of “specific words” showing that there is only ONE prophecy spanning Daniel chapters 8 and 9. I'm sorry if I am only repeating ideas you've already heard... I really don't want to weary you. But this (in summary) is our basic explanation linking the two chapters : In Daniel chapter 8 Gabriel is commanded, “make this man to understand the vision” (8:16) regarding the Ram, the Goat, etc. Gabriel undertakes his mission, but he is unable to complete it. Daniel explains the reason : “I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days... I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.” (8:27) [Or as it is in Fenton's Translation, “...I was astonished at the revelation, and could not understand it.” Daniel's primary concern seems to have been the timing, because all the other elements seem quite clear.] Then about 15 years later, Gabriel returns to Daniel and he resumes his work. Daniel recognizes Gabriel whom he “had seen in the vision at the beginning.” (9:21) This (I think it is clear,) is a direct reference to the Daniel8 vision. (Daniel immediately associated Gabriel with that earlier vision seen in the 3rd year of Belshazzar involving the Ram, the Goat, the Little horn, and the 2300 days.) And then Gabriel says to Daniel, “understand the matter and consider the vision”. Again, I suggest that this is a call to consider that earlier vision which has come to Daniel's mind. I see no indication that Gabriel is speaking here about a new vision. (No additional imagery of Beasts, etc. is introduced.) The only piece of the Daniel8 vision that Gabriel did not explain, all those years earlier, was the 2300 evening-mornings. And so it seems quite natural that the angel should now begin to speak about periods of time.

It must vary from church to church. Clear back to the 60's, the young people in my home church were given a number of Sabbaths every year where they were wholly responsible for everything. And if they had ideas to do things, I can't remember any time when the "adults" refused... And I remember when my best friend and I were called on by the Nominating Committee to take positions in the church when we were teenagers. Sad to hear that such things weren't on a church-wide basis...

As you'll notice, it ends up being tough to read because a lot of it is dialogue in stories with the stories omitted. Still, it's great to have in one place, and I enjoyed the process of compiling it, and learned more about the structure and features of each of the 4 Gospels. More soon.

Yentyl's brings out a good point about limiting God to what we can grasp with our mortal mindset. I think we can allow for some sanctified imagination here

Sign me up! I'll spend a few millennia being a tourist of the stars

From an architectural standpoint, removing the need for shelter and protection (elements and danger) really opens the possibilities for design. I would be delighted to have a house with the sky as my roof. It would seem just something to create a screen for privacy or sound buffer and a place to put basic furnishings to accommodate fellowship, meals and a place to rest and relax. Many people have that covered on their deck or patio or garden area. In the woods a bed of moss. Hang out in the broad limbs of a nice tree or rocks down by the babbling brook.
