The Authority of the General Conference in Session

False. Under the present system: A woman can be elected as a Vice-President of the General Conference has has been so elected, but she cannot b elected as General Conference President. The above is only one example. There are others. In any case, I have shown your statement to be false.1 point -

It is such a shame that people die. When people make such a contribution we expect them, like our mothers, to live forever.1 point -
Are we born justified?
8thdaypriest reacted to joeb for a topic
8thday, This is why a true understanding of ga'al is important. It shows such claims are false. Christ's atonement, His payment of our ransom, was a transaction, a payment of the debt we owe but could not pay. (Look up He paid it alone. He paid it for He was the only one who was God, man, and the only one who perfectly kept God's law. There is no room ga'al for this metaphysical nonense being put forth by Robert and Samie. We human beings sold ourselves. Paul said he was carnal, sold under sin. In the OT Isaiah says the Jews sold themselves. I don't know why when I copy out of my e-Bible the text always comes out bolded. Drives me crazy. There are also other Bible texts that say individuals sold themselves to do evil. All of this points to the fact that Christ's sacrifice was a transaction to pay a debt, to buy us out of our slavery as this was the entire point of the law of inheritance(ga'al). This is the entire legal justification for God being able to justify those who believe. Those who believe, repent, and obey are justified and become, once more, citizens of heaven and once this is all over will recieve their inheritance--the new earth, dominion over it, and even now, dominion over themselves, which human beings do not have who have not accepted Christ.1 point -
Bush and the Iraq war
D. Allan reacted to Stan for a topic
I do not think that is true. The French knew he didn't , the UN inspector said they did not, The Canadian Intelligence did not believe they did, and they were not alone,.. although the UN for a seemed for a while was convinced he did. Collin Powell was convinced he did, by info he was provided. He was a very trusted man, and when he learned he had been scammed he backed away from GWB, The only person I know of, who has threaten to use WMD was Bush, with Iran, Iraq and North Korea. He very publicly said the use of Nuclear Weapons has not been ruled out. I do believe that he has pushed those countries to have equal power.1 point -

In regard to marriage and ordination: Marriage has a civil function. IOW, it is the Stated that determines who can perform a marriage. That may vary from place to place. And, it may be independent of what the Church says. 1) I once lived in a State, in the United States, where a congregational pastor had to obtain a license to perform marriages and as part of that process had to obtain a civil bond to cover any failure to follow the rules of the State. That provided some interesting issues: a) The Conference hired a new pastor, from another State. Shortly after he came, he performed a marriage. The State checked for his license when he turned in the signed certificate and he got into trouble for not being licensed. The Conference had to send a letter to all of its pastors reminding them of the legal obligation to obtain a license and to get a civil bond. 'b) One of my SDA pastoral friends had his office just outside of the State border. He did not want to obtain a license and a civil bond. So, he would do the ceremony, in his office and anything done in the State was simply a fake. 2) I currently live in a State where the requirement to perform a marriage is simply to be a resident of the State, of legal age, and competent. There is no obligation to be a clergy-person at all. 3) I once lived in a country where no clergy-person had any right to perform a marriage ceremony. All marriages were civil.1 point -
Ron Halvorsen, Sr
D. Allan reacted to Aliensanctuary for a topic
I attended a few of Ron Halvorsen's sermons in Keene, TX a number of years ago. Don't know if he was Sr. or Jr. OK. The link shows me that R H Sr. was the ex-gang member whom I heard speaking at Sabbath services while he was pastoring in the big SDA church Keene. Sorry, Ron, but I attended church while a little drunk a few times. I did get over it, though, and started believing in God, which was the cure, the permanent cure. I did manage to make a few friends within the SDA community, including my future wife. I don't recall any of his sermons, but he could get quite animated at times.1 point -

My question to you is this. When the General Conference in session rejected Rightousness by Faith in 1888 was that Gods voice speaking through the church? On the contrary Ellen White makes it clear it was not. So the GC in session does not always speak for God but for mans opinions and viewpoints.1 point -

There is a working with what the decision is to maintain unity. However the decision is not necessary the final or best decision. Don't forget it was the General Conference which sent Mrs. White to Australia. It was the 1923 General conference that threw out A. G. Daniels, demoted W. W. Prescott and while Willie White got to keep his job it was stripped of power and influence (basically he was fired but got to keep his office and paycheck.) and had witch hunts in our schools for non-fundamentalists. Also, there was another General Conference; this one the members were apostles, prophets and Bible writers. Surely this one could not mess up: yet they sent Paul to the temple to sacrifice which lead to his death. (Read what Mrs. White has to say about them.)1 point -
11 reasons why I understand the Bible and Mrs. White to support Women's ordinaion
Johann reacted to Tom Wetmore for a topic
And it should also be remembered that she also said far to much importance was place on the ritual of laying on of hands. I have often challenged the effort of anyone discrediting her ordination credentials because that ritual supposedly never happened to her, as if it magically passed some divine power through the hands of those doing the ordination. To invalidate the official, action of the GC in giving her that recognition with these credentials for the want of any record of the ritual of magic hands, is to put an inordinate level of importance on the ritual. It is as if that trumps the action of the GC. We are not a ritualistic religion.1 point -
God's blessings become curses?
LynnDel reacted to Kevin H for a topic
A big part of the Deuteronomic history (Deuteronomy - 2 Kings) is how people can turn God's blessings into curses and how God can turn curses into blessings. The story of Gideon and his 300, after he had delivered Israel, he turned into a despot and pursued the enemy far more than reasonable. On the other hand the curse on the house of Eli that no old men would be in that family, did you realize that that family produced more prophets than any other family? Prophets have a tendency not to make it to old age. (Also an interesting note: Most if not all the curses in the Deuteronomic history, if you were to follow them out ended up on one man, the Prophet Jeremiah.)1 point
