What do you like to do on the Sabbath?

We like to go the park and feed the ducks and squirrels. When my uncles were alive(they were not SDA) we would get together and play music. I should say they played, the musical gene skipped me. In the winter time, the kids and I would play board games. We also watch (gasp) Biblical movies, and we play the game (what's the difference between the movie version and the Biblical one).

God will never give you anything you cannot handle?

This is a cut and paste from Church Leaders.com because I do not want to pass it off as my own work, yet the point they drive at is one I agree with also. God will never give you anything you cannot handle. "Why should we stop saying this? Because it’s a lie. … We’ve completely twisted 1 Corinthians 10:13, as this verse is pointing toward temptation, and even then it states God will be there if things get too tough. The reality is that God just might give us things we can’t handle so that we will gaze toward him for the extra help. Mind blowing right? Realize that not everything is going to go the way you plan, think or hope. Sometimes stuff is going to hit the fan, and in order for you to get through it, you are going to NEED to rely on God’s comfort, peace and understanding. We weren’t meant to do life alone.

That is hard but I would try to make some Adventist friends. Going on nature hikes with Adventist friends is good, some nature study, I listen to Youtube for Adventist/Christian things some or talk to SDA friends long distance, invite people over for lunch if you have your own place, look online for interesting seminars at SDA churches nearby,,, Sometimes I research Bible topics or other ideas online on the online Bible or Ellen White database.

I have known really super pleasing people who will not risk any conversation that would encourage any thinking, much too risky. There was only sweetness and no assertiveness of any measure. It was very hard to stomach it, really. Then i have known those who so control conversation to not permit any thought that conflicts with their thinking and cared little whether this involved abrasiveness to almost any extreme short of physically striking someone, very intimidating, and imposing. And there are agenda's and personal issues that cause these manners to develop. I still try to reach out and connect with those who relate in these modes. It stretches me. I don't think there is a perfect fit with any two people, and graciousness is always needed, sometimes more and other times less.

What do you like to do on the Sabbath?

I look forward to attending SS & Church ... the worship and fellowship is very inspiring and uplifting to me. That being said, on Friday evenings is a time which I enjoy either playing the piano or some good Christian music on the stereo. I usually read, study my SS Lesson one last time, have a personal devotion. Sometimes I read, sometimes watch 3ABN or HOPE. Other times talk on phone with family and friends. Sabbath afternoons (after fellowship at church) a nice nap is appreciated. Then I enjoy doing some visitation or sometimes go to a park or historical site. Here again sometime, reading a good Christian book, watching 3ABN or HOPE or playing music completes my Sabbath. There is always so much to do that when the sun sets on Sabbath I wish it had lasted longer. time to return to the other world :) That is probably more than you needed to know but hopefully it gives you some ideas.

I'm going to the One Project gathering in Boulder, CO this weekend. I'm really stoked! It's the closest thing to a "Camp Meeting" (i.e., a large gatheing of SDAs from all over) that I have attended in over 20 years. I'll get to meet at least one CA member in person there.

Yes, the people who are wearing the mask (façade) are often simply insecure. However, it is sometimes difficult to spot the ones who are "playing" you. Until you have proof of motive, how do you separate those who are genuine and those who become your greatest admirer? With each birthday I do seem to be less concerned about being accepted by others and more concerned with my relationship with our Lord. A rather nice tradeoff.

So true. When I encounter folks like this I tend to suspect it as being a facade, a mask they wear. Under many circumstances, even beyond the gooey ones, I wonder about what people's lives are really like, what they are really like when nobody is looking. So often people are just afraid of not being accepted if people really knew the truth. I think it really is a rare human being that is genuine and transparent in a real sense of "what you see is what you get." But we all are flawed and damaged in some way. There really is something freeing about letting go of worrying about what others might think and just being honest about our warts and insecurities. While the gooey ones may seem obviously superficial and may often be harmlessly annoying in their gooeyness, they may just be insecure and ha no ill motives other than saving face. The ones that concern me are the ones with ulterior motives, the ones that are just "playing" you for some devious purpose, manipulating you to get what they want or with a real intent to deceive.

"Gooey or Gushers" in my experience are not necessarily reserved for Christians. Ladies seem to be more gooey than men ... but some are so consistently sticky sweet (vocally & verbally) that I feel my stomach turn. And, yes if they add God Bless You's, Praise The Lord, etc., after almost every comment is a bit too much. Most recently I have known those who respond to any comment, "Good message ... Children's story, etc.." with "Praise the Lord" . Not that this is bad, but how do you respond/react?

What do you like to do on the Sabbath?

I like to play FreeCell or Solitaire on the computer while listening to the audio Bible on Sabbath, but I do that throughout the week, also. I'm with sick people every day at work, so I don't visit the sick on my days off. If the DVR records a creation-oriented or some other spiritually-oriented program of interest I watch those. Of course, there is always CA to think about, but without internet at home, I may just jot a thought or two down. Sabbath-keeping rules for Christians may be less than clear, but in the next life, what we are permitted to do will be perfectly clear. After working at our jobs for six days, it might be important to kick back and relax for a day. Back in the days of Moses, one man had the misfortune of getting caught while gathering firewood on the Sabbath. The Sabbath laws given to Moses point us to those in the next life: no gathering food or firewood, and no work, just rest. Those laws will be programmed into our minds, so we won't have to worry about breaking them and getting stoned. Seems like the more we get away from the artificial and into nature on the day of rest, the better off we will be. I think that listening to a running stream or hearing the wind in the trees and feeling the wind and the sun on our faces tends to quiet our spirits and bring us closer to our Creator.

What do you like to do on the Sabbath?

I'm not asking for dos and don'ts, I was looking for creative ideas to jog my mind a bit on the subject. That's why I phrased the question the way I did so no one would come here swinging a legalistic/liberal hammer. I also realize that the Sabbath is sorta like time that you spend with a significant other (sorta, kinda.... not really. I wish people would stop using that as an example. God is a father figure to me, not a boyfriend. Too weird.). I wish people would understand that it takes a little more than knowing the day to keep Sabbath right. I'm trying to have the right spirit when it comes to keeping the 4th commandment. The Sabbath is so forgotten in our society and as a person who comes from a family that doesn't keep it at all, I often suffer from a lack of understanding on this commandment and I find myself unable to generate wholesome Sabbath activities that I can do. Also, could you please tell me which books in particular to read from? I don't know a lot of authors concerning SDA beliefs and when it comes to Ellen White in particular, she mentions the Sabbath so much that like almost 13000 results came up for every sentence she mentions the word. I was looking on one of her online libraries when I got those results. A lot of the results were just sentences that mentioned the Sabbath in some small way with no additional ideas on what one can do to keep it fun besides the vague use of the term: go out in nature. I understand the Sabbath should not be kept like it was kept when the pharisees was around, but is it too much to ask for a little tip or two in order to spice things up? Especially when no one else among your family and friends worships with you?

Aubrey's Basic Oat Bran Muffins: Makes 12 Muffins (Or 18-24 Mini Muffins) 2 1/4 c Oat Bran (Should be the consistency of a flour) 1/4 c Chopped Nuts (Walnuts are healthiest, but I use pecans.) 1/4 c Pumpkin and sunflower seed mix 1 TBS Chia seeds 1 TBS Flax seeds 1/4 c Choped Dates (Or raisins, or craisins, or blueberries, or dried cranberries or dried cherries) 1 TBS Baking Powder 1/4 c Packed Brown Sugar (Or 1/4 c honey or molasses) <--I don't use any kind of sweetener at all. Still think they're delicious. 1 1/4 c Skim Milk (I use coconut milk. Almond milk and rice milk work just the same too.) 2 egg whites or 2 egg substitute (I use 1/4 cup of applesauce, sometimes I use 1/4 cup of pumpkin puree.) 2 TBS vegetable oil (I use coconut oil, but never 2 TBS, more like 1/4 of a TBS) Directions: In large bowl, whisk all ingredients together. Line muffin tins with foil/paper baking cups (I use silicone "tins" so I don't have to use the baking cups. I spray the "tin" with coconut oil spray and the muffins fall right out after baking.) Bake at 425 °F for 14-17 minutes. (Mine take 14 mins 30 secs) Test with a toothpick--it should come out moist but not wet. Enjoy!

Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.....1 Corinthians 6 God is Love! Why are God's people so violent?

It is simply wrong for anyone to claim that God's children are violent. NIV84 | ‎1 Jn 3:10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. Deception is the devil's main mo. What could make God look so bad than for Satan to pass off his own children as God's?

Instructive Op-ed worth reading and taking to heart.

Kind of missed the point... Not liberal vs. conservative. Not about the substance of what is said. It is not about disagreeing. It is about how the message is conveyed. And it is about the underlying attitude and lack of civility and respect. The concern here is the coarsening of the culture of this forum by the antagonistic approach of some and the gravitation toward the titilation and shocking.

    Col 2:16,17

NASB - "All mankind" will come before Me to worship Mark 2:27 "the Sabbath was made for mankind" The monthly cycle Sabbath "new Moon to New Moon" AND the weekly cycle Sabbath "from Sabbath to Sabbath" - Since as Heb 10 points out regarding animal sacrifice feasts/celebrations "he takes away the first to establish the second The problem with that suggestion is that there is no way defined in the Bible for keeping the Lev 23 annual Sabbaths "without a sacrifice" - the very core of the feast/Sabbath is removed. For example Day of Atonement - with no sacrifice at all - you "do nothing". What is more is that you don't even have a priest according to Heb 7 the Priesthood is also ended. So with no priest and no sacrifice - nothing at all happens on the Lev 23 Day of Atonement. -- on earth. The only way for any of it to have meaning after the cross - is to follow Christ as the new Priestly order -- into the heavenly Sanctuary. Zech 9 points to the first coming of Christ and is quoted in the Gospels 9. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. as we all know from reading the Gospel accounts. But in Zechariah's true style of "mixing things up" he includes elements that did not get fulfilled at the first coming of Christ (possibly because the Jews were not intended to reject the Messiah) 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim And the horse from Jerusalem; And the bow of war will be cut off. And He will speak peace to the nations; And His dominion will be from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth. That did not happen -- as we all know.

    Life & Death

We often hears stories of when someone would normally be expected to die, but did not We often attribute that to the grace of God. That raises issues, and to contribute to the issues, it is story time. Dr. & Mrs. Jones (not their real names) were enjoying a quiet Sunday morning vacation in Colorado. The morning was early and they had not been awake long, when Mrs. Jones fell to the floor. As Dr. Jones examined his wife, he quickly realized the she was in a very critical situation. Her life was at stake and she could die at any moment. He picked up the telephone to make up a call and the result was that a jet aircraft lifted off the runway and began it trip to where Dr. Jones was and he began taking life saving actions on his wife. As she was loaded into the aircraft, he asked if she could be transported to California where they lived and he had his medical practice. The clinicians who were advising him informed him that she would likely die in transit and she needed to be taken to the nearest facility capable of dealing with her clinical condition--Denver. Sunday afternoon, in a hospital where I was then working, Mrs. Jones had her mitral valve replaced. As Mrs. Jones recovered, I said to her one day: You have been given a gift of life. You are alive today because your husband was a Board Certified Cardiologist who recognized your clinical condition and knew what to do. You are alive today because when your husband picked up the telephone a jet aircraft, with a clinical team onboard, became airborne and transported you to Denver. Most people would not be married to a cardiologist and be able to jet a jet aircraft airborne with a telephone call. You have been given a gift that few people would have been given. How is your life going to change because of this gift that you have been given? As Mrs. Jones responded to me she told me that her life would change. She had a different sense of what was important in life. Her life would change because of this gift that she had been given. At this point I will leave you who are reading this to consider what you may have been given as a gift that others may, or may not, have received and whether or not your life has changed as a result.

    Transparency

God inspired a thought in my heart one Sabbath afternoon while on a sabbath hike alone, That was he wanted me to be transparent so the light and love he shines on me could be seen and reflect back to others around me. That kind of transparency is such that my wretchedness would not come between others and God's beauty as i witnessed to others of his glory.

Why are God's people so violent?

We are fallen and have a hard time making right choices-we all are subject to this reality. We have to catch ourselves in utero, before our choices gestate into something that is hard to turn around. Christian identity would be a good example-they see an exclusive Aryan race in the Bible, and once this gets hold of a person it can be hard to turn around.

Is This the End of Christianity in the Middle East?

Long article... It may appear that Christianity will disappear in the Middle East; and indeed the beast power and antichrist will wear out the saints; but they won't wipe out the church. The story spoke of Christians forming alliances with Islam. Eventually, Jews may do the same, just to survive. Could this be the adultery that the harlot on the beast commits with the kings of the world? BTW, I don't see the pope exterminating the church in the Middle East. It appears to be Islam that is doing it. Does the church need to review it's position on who the beast and antichrist powers are?

Probably there are many reasons, but I suspect that one reason is that because we appear to have it together, they don't want us to think they don't have it together, and the beat goes on ................. The stranger on the street doesn't care if we watched the game {at least a few minutes} on Sabbath afternoon. If we open the door just a crack and they respond we are off on a completely different relationship. Sad but true That's why I love small group Sabbath School lesson studies. When we come together study and share how the lesson applies to our lives walls come down. We don't have to cover every day to benefit as a group. Taking time to pray together 2x2 before or after class is a time for us to seriously bond.
